E-LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES IN TIMES OF COVID-19

have been closed due to the lockdown
imposed nationwide in many countries to
contain the spread of the deadly virus. In
the fight against Covid-19, Govt. of India
also imposed nationwide lockdown in a
phased manner to stem the tide.
The Ministry of Human Resource
Development has taken several prompt
and effective measures in educational
sector to address the challenging situation
arising out of Covid 19. The ministry
through its digital learning platforms helps
the teachers and learners to utilize time
productively by engaging in on-line
learning while maintaining social
distancing.
Some of the digital learning platforms
offered under the ministry are as follows:
Swayam (Study Webs of Active-
Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) :
Swayam is a Massive open online course
(MOOC) platform hosting 1900 courses
covering both high school and higher
Education in various subjects.
Academicians from hundreds of
institutions throughout the country are
involved in the development and delivery
of these courses. The courses offered
under this portal are free of cost. However,
learners who want to get a certificate after
the completion of the course, need to
register for the final proctored exams, with
a nominal fee. Along with Self Learning
Material, Swayam portal provides video
lectures and facility of self-assessment.
The questions and queries of the learners
are also being resolved through
discussion forum. Nine national
coordinators have been appointed to
manage the courses in Swayam. They are

Education ) for self-paced courses and
international courses, NPTEL (National
Programme on Technology Enhanced
Learning) for engineering, UGC

group of 32 DTH channels devoted to
telecast high-quality educational

A groforestry is a land-use system which deals with theory and practice of creation,
conservation and scientific management of agricultural crops, forest crops and
livestock. Agroforestry is a sustainable land use system for harmonious development of
agriculture and forestry sector besides offering various environmental services and
generation of carbon credits. Commercial and Industrial Agroforestry in India is an
emerging thrust areas in post green revolution period for food, wood and environmental
security. In India, Agroforestry practices have been increased for livelihoods and
commercial gain in limited land resources for enhancing the overall productivity. It has
become a way of life for the rural communities as it plays an important role in land-use
management, livelihood security and reduction of vulnerability. Growing human and
livestock population require huge amount of food, fodder, fiber, medicine, timber etc.

to maximize the productivity with the diverse produce, thereby generating livelihood for
the farmers. The Grewia and other temperate trees based agroforestry system in
Himalayan region are fulfilling the need of hill farmers for fodder, fuel, fiber and wild edible
fruits. The important agroforestry models such as agrisilviculture, agrihorticulture,
silvipasture, agrisilvihorticulture, Hortipasture boundary/ peripheral plantation, Block
plantation etc and linking them with carbon finance are highly beneficial to the farmers.
Agroforestry immensely helps in natural resource conservation and management to
improve the soil fertility, maintain the soil and water balance with restoration of land
degradation. The farmers ITK (Indigenous Technical Knowledge) in the form of traditional
agroforestry to harness the tree benefits is now scaled up in commercial and industrial
forestry. The debris and leaf fall from the trees in agroforestry make the soil porous and
naturally active. Tree species with grasses (silvipasture) is an important technique for
accelerating the process of restoration and making land biologically active in mining and
landslide areas. Agroforestry is also a major contributor in carbon forestry in agricultural
landscape through carbon sequestration, clean environment, agroecotourism and
agroecosystem services. Therefore, agroforestry is now emerging as a green
enterprising and good business model for natural resource managers.
TEACHING AND EDUCATION IN AGROFORESTRY
In India Agroforestry education is presently being imparted in State Agriculture
Universities (SAUs), traditional Universities and private Institutions as an important
subject in B.Sc. Forestry, B.Sc. Agriculture, B.Sc. Horticulture etc. The master
programme in Agroforestry (M.Sc. Agroforestry) and doctorate in Agroforestry (Ph.D.
Agroforestry) is being offered by various SAUs, CAUs and others institutions in India. The
agro-foresters are trained in such a way that they can acquire the real time knowledge of
current trends of agroforestry. The different aspects covered under master programme
such as Introductory Agroforestry, Principles and Practices of Agroforestry, Multipurpose
Trees in Agroforestry, Principles of Crop Production in Agroforestry, Shrubs & Fruit Crops
in Agroforestry, Fodder and Pasture development in Agroforestry, Soil, Water and
watershed Management in Agroforestry, Production Economics, Marketing & value chain
of Agroforestry, Natural Resource Mangement, Forest certification, Carbon agroforestry

other Institutes/Universities through their respective entrance examination or process of
their selection. ICAR conducts an All India Entrance Examination for Admission (AIEEA-
PG) in consultation with NTA (National Testing Agency) and top rankers get ICAR PG
Scholarship while those who qualify get National Talent Scholarship (NTS- PG) to
master’s degree programme at all the SAUs, CAUs in the field of Agriculture and allied
sciences including Agroforestry. Similarly, for Ph.D. one can take admission in the SAUs
or other Institutes/Universities directly as per the norm of the Institutes/Universities or
ICAR- AICE-JRF/SRF for taking admission in SAUs, CAUs and DUs by ICAR. ICAR
entrusted to the NTA (National Testing Agency) for AIEEA and award of scholarships and
fellowships from 2019 onwards. The National Eligibility Test (NET) in Agroforestry is
being conducted for lectureship by Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board (ASRB) of

professionals having master’s degree and NET or Ph.D. can join the national and
international University/institution as faculty members, Scientists and Research Officers.
The international organizations and agencies recruit experienced agroforestry
professionals’ in very lucrative salary viz UNDP, IUCN, World Bank, Asian Development
Bank, CIFOR, ITTO, OXFAM, ICIMOD etc. In the livelihood projects the agro-foresters

„ Prime Minister Narendra Modi will share his
thoughts with the people of the country and
abroad in his 'Mann Ki Baat' programme on All
India Radio on 31st May. It will be the 65th
episode of the monthly radio programme.
Prime Minister Modi had invited, the people,
especially the youth from all walks of life to
share their ideas and views with him.
„ External Affairs Ministry has said, India and
China have established mechanisms, both at
military and diplomatic levels, to resolve situa-
tions which may arise in border areas peace-
fully through dialogue. In a virtual briefing in
New Delhi, Ministry spokesperson Anurag Sri-
vastava said, Indian troops have taken a very
responsible approach on border management. He added that, India remains firm
in the resolve to ensuring the country's sovereignty and national security. Gov-
ernment Sources had earler clarified that there has been no recent contact
between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Donald
Trump. The clarification came after Mr Trump reportedly said that he spoke to Mr
Modi over India's ongoing border row with China. Mr Trump has also offered to
mediate between India and China to resolve the border dispute. Sources said, the
last conversation between the the two leaders was on 4th of April this year on the
subject of Hydroxychloroquine.
„ The Indian Air Force has operationalised its new
squadron "Number-18 - Flying Bullets" with the
Light Combat Aircraft LCA Tejas on the 27th of
this month. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief
Marshal RKS Bhadauria launched it at the Sulur
airbase near Coimbatore. The Flying Bullets
serves as the second Indian Air Force squadron
to operate with the modern multi-role fighter aircraft LCA Tejas. The first squadron
to operate with the aircraft known as the Number-45 Flying Daggers is also head-
quartered at the same base. The indigenously developed light fighter aircraft LCA
Tejas is certified with the "Full Operational Clearance" standard. It is a tailless,
fourth generation, compound delta-wing aircraft developed by the Hindustan Aero-
nautics Limited. It is equipped with fly-by-wire flight control system, integrated
digital avionics and multimode radar. The squadron has been revived on the 1st
April this year at the Sulur base and set to further augment India's defence of air
frontiers.
„ Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to all Chief Minis-
ters regarding the COVID-19 situation in the states
and union territories. Mr. Shah has invited their sug-
gestions on the future strategy to deal with the pan-
demic amid the ongoing lockdown due to the spread
of Covid-19 pandemic slated to end on 31st May.
„ Indian Railways has decided to increase the
advance reservation period from the existing 30 days to 120 days for all 30
Special Rajdhani type trains operating since 12th of May. It will also be applica-
ble on all 200 Special Mail Express which will start operations from 1st, June.
These changes will be implemented with effect from 8 AM of train booking date
of 31st of May onwards. It said, booking of parcel and luggage will also be per-
mitted in all these 230 trains. Meanwhile, a pib release said, the Indian Railways
has already distributed more than 85 lakh free meals and about 1.25 crore free
water bottles to migrants travelling in Shramik Special Trains since 1st May 2020.
„ Union Minister for Road Transport Nitin Gadkari
inaugurated the 440 metre-long tunnel, constructed
below the busy town of Chamba as part of the
Chardham Connectivity Project. Addressing the
Border Road Organization (BRO) officials through
video conferencing, Mr. Gadkari said, the tunnel will
significantly reduce the time taken by travellers on
the Rishikesh-Dharasu and Gangotri stretch of the Chardham Highway. He said,
it will also avoid congestion in the city of Chamba and open up avenues of socio-
economic development in the region. The project is to be completed by October
this year, 3 months ahead of schedule. Under the Chardham Project costing
around 12,000 crore rupees, approximately 889 Kms of Highway Ccnstruction is
to be done. BRO has been entrusted for construction of 250 Kilometre-stretch
leading to holy shrine Gangotri and Badrinath.
„ The Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers'
Welfare, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar held a review
meeting in New Delhi, with both the Ministers of
State for Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, Shri
Parshottam Rupala and Shri Kailash Choudhary and
Secretary (DAC&FW) Shri Sanjay Agarwal on the
progress of the Locust Control Operations. Shri
Tomar said the Government is concerned about the issue and is dealing urgently
with the situation. The Centre is in close touch with the affected States and an
Advisory has been issued. 15 sprayers will arrive from Britain in the next 15 days.
Besides, 45 more sprayers will be procured in a month and half time. Drones will
be used to spray pesticides on tall trees and inaccessible places for effective
control of locusts, while plans are afoot to deploy helicopters for aerial spray.

„ 13 flights from the gulf will bring back 2000 more
Indians as the Vande Bharat Mission continue to assist
distressed and stranded Indians abroad come home.
Out of 13 flights from the Gulf, more than half are from
the UAE. There are six flights from Dubai to Jaipur ,
Kochi, Kannur, Hyderabad , Kozhikode and Thiru-
vananthapuram. Another two flights are from Abu
Dhabi to Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram. For Jaipur it is the first flight from
UAE under the Vande Bharat Mission. From Saudi Arabia , there is a flight to Sri-
nagar and Kozhikode. This is also the first flight to Srinagar from the Kingdom.
Kuwait has two flights to Ahmedabad and Kozhikode. Muscat has one flight to
Kochi and Doha has one flight to Kannur. As part of Vande Bharat Mission, an Air
India flight will bring back around 150 Indian nationals from Colombo More flights
are expected from Colombo in next phase while INS Jalashwa of Indian navy will
sail from Colombo port carrying around 700 Indian nationals to Tuticorin. It will be
the first voyage of navy ship from Sri Lanka, as part of its Samudrasetu mission.
„ US President Donald Trump signed an executive order regard-
ing liability protections for social media companies such as
Twitter and Facebook for content posted on these platforms.
The president claimed that the move aims to defend free speech
from one of the gravest dangers it has faced in American history.
The move came after Twitter applied fact checks to two of Pres-
ident Trump's tweets. Trump said the fact checks were editorial
decisions by Twitter and amounted to political activism. He said
the companies should not be able to avail protection from lawsuits for what is
posted on their platforms. The order directs executive branch agencies to ask
independent rule-making agencies including the Federal Communications Com-
mission and the Federal Trade Commission to study whether they can place new
regulations on the companies.
BUSINESS
„ The country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI)
has reduced interest rates on retail term deposits by
up to 40 basis points (bps) across all tenors. This is
the second reduction in fixed deposits interest rates
by the lender in May. It had reduced its deposit rates
on May 12. The new rates of interest, effective from
Wednesday, shall be made applicable to fresh deposits and renewals of maturing
deposits. For deposits maturing in seven days to 45 days, the lender is offering an
interest rate of 2.90 per cent as against 3.30 per cent earlier. The revised rate for
180 days to 210 days bracket is 4.40 per cent compared to 4.80 per cent. FDs
maturing in one year to less than two years will now fetch an interest rate of 5.10
per cent as against 5.50 per cent. Interest rate on deposits in the five years to up
to 10 years tenor will be 5.40 per cent compared to 5.70 per cent. For senior citi-
zens also, interest rates on retail term deposits across all tenors have been cut by
up to 40 basis points. The lender has also slashed interest rates on bulk deposits
(2 crore rupees and above) by up 50 basis points.
„ The Central Board of Indirect Taxes (CBIC) said that
it has sanctioned GST refund claims worth Rs 11,052
crore in last 47 days. In a tweet, the CBIC said, it is
committed to ensuring liquidity to GST tax payers
especially MSME sectors during the lockdown.
CBIC further said, 29,230 refund claims amounting
to Rs 11,052 crore were disposed of between 8th of April to 24th of May. The
Finance Ministry had on 8th of April said, in order to provide relief during COVID-
19, it has been decided to issue all pending GST and custom refunds which would
benefit around one lakh business entities, including MSMEs.
„ In Uttar Pradesh, the stage is now set for creation of employment for around 10
lakh workers. In the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the MSME depart-
ment of state is to sign MOUs with Industries and Business Chambers for provid-
ing over 9.5 lakhs skilled and semi skilled manpower. The State MSME Minister
Sidharth Nath singh said that with this agreement, the dream of many migrant
labourers will be fulfilled as envisioned by Chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Under
this agreement Indian Industries Association has asked for 5 lakh workers while
National real estate Development Council asked for 2.5 lakh and CII, for 2 lakh
workers.
SPORTS
„ Sports Authority of India (SAI) has deposited 30,000
rupees each as out of pocket allowance in accounts
of 2,749 Khelo India athletes. The amount added up
to 8.25 crore rupees in all. In a press release, SAI said
that the money has been transferred to the bank
accounts of the athletes. A total of 2,893 athletes will
be given the pocket allowance with the funds for the remaining 144 athletes to be
transferred by the end of this month. The allowance is for the first quarter of 2020-
21. Athletes from 35 states and union territories have been given the allownaces
in 21 sporting disciplines with the maximum number of them from Maharashtra
(386), Haryana (381), Delhi (225), Punjab (202) and Tamil Nadu (165).The out of
pocket allowance is 1.20 lakh rupees annually and is a part of the Khelo India
scholarship of 6.28 lakh rupees that is given to each athlete selected under the
scheme.
