Paper Name: 1. Skeleton-Based Recognition of Chinese Calligraphic Character

Image

Field of Research Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

Problems/Challenges - While there are various and complicated shape of character's

style, it's problem for common people to identify most of
them.
- Creating a method to identify the Chinese calligraphic
characters which scripted in separated design turned into
problem now.
Terminologies/Keyword Chinese calligraphic character

Recognition 40(12), 3721–3727 (2007)
Methods - MFITS (morphology-fused index table skeletonization)
- Skeleton-based Chinese calligraphic character recognition

Results - In this paper, 15500 character samples were used to build

database that consist of calligrahpic characters images and
printed Kai style.
- Single character: 289 samples were recognized correctly
among 300 calligraphic character samples chosen randomly
from the Internet, 96.3% accuracy rate.
- Full Page: among 323 characters, 308 are identified correctly
so the recognition rate is 95.4%.

Discussion and Outlook - MFITS can output calligraphic character's skeletons with just a
few styles.
- High recognition rate is depending on database with enough
annotated Chinese calligraphic character samples.

Paper Name: 2. Algorithm for drawing ellipses or hyperbolae with a digital

plotter

Field of Research Computer Graphic

Problems/Challenges - Established for computer control of a digital plotter drawing

straight lines.

Terminologies/Keyword Equation

Digital plotter

Related work/Literature - Vector displays generate straight lines automatically, and

Review: similarly analogue techniques can be used to maintain curved
display (Dertouzos and Graham, 1966)

Methods - Bresenham’s algorithm

Results

Discussion and Outlook - It is, however, possible that a special hardware

implementation of part of the conic section algorithm could be
useful in future applications; only addition and simple tests are
involved in the inner loop, and it should be possible to drive
these at the speeds required to set up a reasonably display.

Paper Name: 3. Self-organizing Control Framework for Driverless Vehicles

Field of Research Image Processing

Problems/Challenges - In addition to the continuous developments in the area of

safety features for driverless vehicles, the community of
transportation engineers has a unique opportunity to reinvent
the traffic control principles.

2011, pp. 4581-4586.
Methods - Agent-Based Distributed Control Mechanism

Results - After 1000 simulation runs were analyzed, no conflict values

below the defined thresholds were found between vehicle’s
trajectories. This is an indication that developed control
mechanism has fulfilled safety requirements.
- These acceleration/deceleration rates are acceptable from the user
comfort perspective.
- On the contrary, normal actuated operation distributes the
delay over all the vehicles. Finally, PE operation allows no
delay for the vehicle with the highest PE priority, but the
transition out of PE significantly affects delay of all the other
vehicles.
Discussion and Outlook - The intention is to propose a next-generation control
framework for intersection control of driverless vehicles.

Paper Name: 4. Machine Printed Character Segmentation Method using Side

Profiles

Field of Research Natural Language Processing, Word Segmentation

Optical Character Recognition

Problems/Challenges - Character segmentation affect the whole system performance

while segmented character is not likely recognized properly.
- Segmentation of touching characters in proportional pitch
fonts is a challenging problem in OCR.

the IEEE, Vol.80, No.7, jul.1992, pp. 1066-1078.

Methods - A compromising solution of character segmentation with

character recognition using the four basic features of side
profiles.
Results

- Most touching characters such as “ff”, “tt”, “fi”, “fl”, “rf”, “rt”
and “rp” are successfully separated due to rightward profile is
unique and obvious.
- “d”  ‘c’ + ‘l’, “ed”  ‘e’+ ‘c’ + ‘l’ , m  ‘r’ + ‘n’
Discussion and Outlook - In short future, to replaced matching of pixel histograms, the
contour matching of character outlines may be take into
consideration.
