Sources of water pollution
The rivers are pristine when they descend from the melting snowcaps. As they
find their way to the plains, these rivers gather salts and minerals from the rocks
and sand.
These salts comprise of potassium, sodium, chlorine, and magnesium along with
the phosphates and the nitrates. They form the major component of the totally
dissolved solids (hereinafter referred to as TDS).
You will be hearing about TDS more as we go deep into this buying guide.
You have human wastes like sewage and other impurities flowing into this water.
Industries contribute their mite by releasing harmful industrial chemicals such
as arsenic, lead, iron, and mercury.
All these impurities find their way into the human settlements thereby causing
water-borne diseases like cholera, dysentery, etc. Therefore, there is an urgent
need to purify the water resources before consuming them.
This is the concept behind the functioning of the various water purifiers. You
have different methods of purification based on the level of impurities and TDS
in water. We shall discuss each type of filter for the benefit of all.
As you move towards the coastal areas, the proportion of salt increases in the
groundwater. Now, bore well and dug wells are the primary sources of water in
such areas that do not have the rivers to bank upon.
This well water needs purification because it can contain other impurities
like suspended plant and animal matter in addition to the TDS.
There are municipalities in towns and cities that treat such water resources with
disinfectants like chlorine. Hence, you find a higher proportion of chlorine in
areas served by municipalities. This is also harmful to your health.
Your water purifier needs to take care of these impurities as well. The rivers and
other water resources have to contend with human, animal, and industrial
wastes.
Eliminating these wastes requires the use of modern technology like Reverse
Osmosis (RO), Ultraviolet purification (UV), and Ultra-filtration methods (UF). The
modern water purifiers employ any or all of these methods of purification.
We have seen the concept of TDS in water. We know how it manages to find its
way into the water resources. In a way, our body needs some of these minerals
and salts for its healthy growth.
Hence, one should ensure not to eliminate them completely from the drinking
water. Now, the question arises as to what the acceptable TDS levels are.
Note that these levels are purely indicative. In the normal course, you will find
ground level as well as other water sources having TDS levels below 900.
As per the above table, it should be fair for consumption directly. Is it true?
Unfortunately, the answer is NO. The level of concentration of individual
elements of TDS is more important than the general TDS value.
It can happen that you might have water with TDS levels in the range of 300. But,
the water can have a high concentration of arsenic or mercury and a lower
concentration of other salts.
Under such circumstances, is the water safe? You have the answer at the tip of
your tongue. This water is certainly not palatable. Hence, you need water
purifiers to eliminate these impurities completely.

3. If in doubt, you can always go for the best, i.e. the RO + UV + UF water filters.
However, remember these filters are comparatively expensive as compared to
the other water filters.
4. Your budget plays a very big role in deciding the kind of water purifier you
choose. While determining the budget, you should also factor the cost of
maintenance and replacement of filters.
Best Water Purifier - Frequently Asked
Questions
1. Which water purifier brand offers the best after-sales services?
On this era of customer service, all water purifier brands offer good after-sales
services.
Most of the top water purifier brands offer regular AMC services. The rates
depend on various factors. Usually, it is in the range of around Rs 4,000 per
annum. However, it is better to verify from the water purifier AMC provider.
This AMC includes the cost of replacement of the various filters like RO
membrane, UV and UF filters, activated carbon filters, and sediment filters.
As the name suggests, TDS controllers control the proportion of TDS in the water
coming out of the RO water purifier. Why do you need these controllers?
This water with a low TDS level does not have good taste. Secondly, you need
some minerals and salts in the water to enhance the taste. The TDS controllers
work in the following manner.
The TDS controller divides the water that goes into the RO water system into two
parts. One part goes through the RO membrane whereas the other part goes
into the UV and UF filters.
The water that goes through the UV and UF filters do not undergo any change in
the TDS levels. Therefore you get two different outputs. The final output is a
mixture of both these waters. This is the job of the TDS modulator.
4. What is Mineralizer / Mineral guard
One must admit that the RO water purifier does a great job of purifying the
water. But, it removes essential minerals along with the hazardous ones.
This leaves the output water with a bland taste that does not have much
nutrient value. Therefore, you have water purifier brands including an extra
stage of filtration that ensures the addition of essential minerals to the water.
This helps in maintaining the pH balance as well. Different brands have different
names for these mineralizers. Aquaguard names it ‘Mineral Guard’.
5. How much water is wasted with RO water purifier?
The biggest drawback of RO water purifiers is that it wastes water a lot. For every
litre of pure water it produces, the machines waste 2 litres of water.
The wastage of water depends on the quality of the input water. The higher the
TDS of input water, the higher is the wastage.
6. How do you use reject water?
The reject water contains 95 to 99% of impurities. Hence, this water is absolutely
unfit for human consumption. However, there are other uses.
You can use this water for gardening, cleaning utensils, mopping floors, cleaning
bathroom floors and toilets. However, one should note to wash the utensils with
tap water to remove the salt deposits.
7. ABS Plastic or Stainless Steel tank – Which is better?
Storage tanks are essential ingredients in any water purifier. These storage tanks
are anywhere in the capacity of 10 litres or more.
Hence, you need strong material to withstand the weight of the machine as well
as the water. ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a thermoplastic polymer
capable of withstanding high-temperature fluctuations.
It is a recyclable material much unlike the thermoset plastics. They are non-toxic
in nature. This makes this material perfect for manufacturing water storage
tanks.
ABS plastic does not require as much maintenance as required by steel tanks.
Hence, they are preferable to stainless steel tanks today.
8. Is it safe to buy water purifier online?
However, one should go for reputed brands from reliable websites like Amazon.
You get good deals at these websites.
9. Can I buy a non-branded RO water purifier?
We have seen the differences between the various purification technologies and
seen that a combination of all these technologies is the best option available to
you.
Hence, you find the major water purifier brands manufacturing water purifiers
with multi-filtration technologies. Hence, a water purifier
providing RO+UV+UF+TDS Controller facilities should be the right one to go
ahead.
These are the best water purifiers in India. The list will be updated on a regular
basis. If you have any queries reading the selection of water purifiers, post them
in the comments section below, and we will be glad to answer them.
UV Water Purifier (UltraViolet) – Pros
and Cons Explained!

Once Upon a time, Water used to be fresh, pure and Drinkable. Due to the
different kinds of selfish activities done by us, we pollute Water, Air, and Food.
We can not control the air we breathe, but we can drink completely pure
water. Say thanks to Water purifiers!
The Water we get from Wells, rivers, and ponds contains a lot of Bacteria, Virus,
Cysts, inorganic elements, Dissolved Salts and Heavy Metals.
Examples of the Heavy Metals in the Water include Mercury, Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic,
and thallium. All of these heavy metals have five times more gravity than that of the
water.
But all these impurities can be removed by the water purifiers. In India, the three
most widely used water purifiers are Reverse Osmosis Purifier, UltraViolet Water
Purifier, and UltraFiltration Purifier. In this post, I am going to talk about
the Ultraviolet Water Purifier and the Pros and Cons of it.
Table of Contents
What is a UV Water Purifier?
RO Water Purifier vs UV Water Purifier
o Cons of UV Water Purifier
But After Killing them, the Dead Bodies remain in the water. Most of the UV
Water Purification systems comes with a Saftey Mechanism, and the power does
not leak out when there is no water around the UV Bulb.
When the Water Flows around the UV Bulb, It kills all the Bacteria and Viruses
present in the water, and you are ensured to drink the purified and safe
water.
These Ultraviolet rays enter through the cells of the bacteria and viruses and
destroy them thereby stopping them from reproducing in the water.
Process And The UV Rays Kill 99.99% Of The Germs Present In The
Water.
The Bulb that is located in the Water Purifier produces the Ultra Violet Light,
which kills the Bacteria. A Quartz Glass sleeve is placed around the Bulb, which
blocks Direct contact with the water.
The UV Water Purifier requires electricity to operate, and it uses the same
amount of power that is utilized by a 40 Watt Bulb.
You can also connect your UV Water purifier to a UPS or inverter if there is
a power Outage.
[table id=2 /]
As I mentioned earlier, the UV Purifier only kills the Bacteria and cysts present in
the water but their bodies remain in the water, and separate filters are required
to remove them.
But In RO Purifier, All the Bacteria and Viruses are Killed and removed from the
water.
The UV and UF Purifiers can not remove the Dissolved Salts present in the
Water.
These Dissolved salts are harmful, and the water which contains more TDS level
is not suitable for Drinking. The Reverse Osmosis purifiers can remove all the
Dissolved salts present in the Water, which is not possible in the UV purifier.
If you are not sure about the TDS levels found in the Water, You can opt for
the RO Water Purifier.
On the Whole, the RO Purifiers are better than the Ultraviolet Water Purifiers.
Final Say: If you know the levels of TDS present in the water, you can choose the
UV Water Filter. You can buy the Ultraviolet water purifier online in India at
Amazon. At Amazon.in, you can read the reviews by the real customers and
compare, select the Best UV Purifier that suits your needs.

We live in a world where everything from food to Air and Water is polluted.
Drinking pure Water is one of the essential things to lead a healthy life.
So, Inorder to get the safe water, people often buy Water Purifiers. Gone are
those days where you visit a Retail shop and purchase a product and ship it back
to your home on your Own.
Now, you can buy the Best Water Purifiers Online at Amazon, Flipkart and
other e-commerce sites.
RO Water Purifiers are considered as the most efficient and reliable water
purifiers which can also purify the water with High TDS levels.
Reverse Osmosis, Ultraviolet, and Ultra Filtration are the three most common
water purification systems that are available for the consumers.
In this post, I am going to talk about the Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier and the
pros and cons of it.
Table of Contents
What is Reverse Osmosis?
The RO Water purifier concept
o Various components of an RO water purifier
What is Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier?
Types of Reverse Osmosis Water Purifiers

Liquids, especially water have a natural tendency to move from an area of lower
concentration to a higher one when separated by a semipermeable membrane.
The absorption of water by the roots of the plants is the best example of
osmosis.
Source: Puretecwater.Com
Reverse osmosis is the exact opposite of osmosis. In this process, the liquid
moves from an area of higher concentration to that of a lower one, again
through a semipermeable membrane. This is against their natural tendency.
Hence, you need to apply force. One of the best examples that come to mind is
the desalination of water.
Source: Puretecwater.Com
The role of the semipermeable membrane is very important in Reverse Osmosis.
This membrane performs a selective role in the sense that it allows some
molecules to pass through while restricting the others depending on their size.
Most of the houses have screen doors that allow air to pass through but deters
the insects like flies and mosquitoes.
Reverse Osmosis is extremely useful for separating pure water from other
solvents.
RO forms the core aspect of most of the water purifiers in the market. Let us
look at how RO water purifiers work.
This concept provides for using two outlets. One is for the pure water to flow
through whereas the other outlet caters to the elimination of contaminated
water, also known as reject water in industry circles.
Source:
This reject water contains an overwhelming 93% to 95% of impurities.
Some people advocate recycling this water back into the filtering machine.
However, that can cause a strain on the machine especially if the concentration
of contaminants is high.
You can either drain this water out or use it for alternative purposes such as
washing toilets, floors, etc.
To put things in proper perspective, water (H2O) has a molecular weight of 18. At
the same time, the RO filters do not allow ions of higher valency to pass through.
Now, sodium is a monovalent ion.
Therefore, sodium ions pass through the RO filters necessitating the use of
supplemental filters to eliminate such ions.
RO filters can take care of the heavy metal impurities but allow gases like Carbon
dioxide (CO2) to pass through.
Hence, you find RO treated water as slightly acidic with pH value below 7. It is a
very effective method to treat groundwater having a high concentration of TDS.
The RO filtration can remove many vital minerals from the water. Hence, the
final stages of water purification involve the use of mineralizers to enhance the
mineral content of water.
RO Water
Purifcation
The filtered water then passes on to a storage tank for human consumption.
There is an automatic Shut-Off valve that ensures to switch of the flow of water
into the tank. This triggers a process whereby the system shuts off. As you
consume the water from the tank, the pressure inside the tank reduces thereby
activating the machine again.
The impure water or the reject water is drained off through a separate outlet.
The machine has a check valve that prevents the backward flow of water from
the storage tank. Similarly, you have flow restrictors to maintain the pressure on
the inlet side of the membrane. This is to prevent wastage of water.
All the Bacteria, Viruses, Cysts, toxic antibodies, fluorides and Dissolved Salts like
Arsenic, lead, iron and cadmium are removed from the Water.
If you live in an Area where the TDS levels in the water are high, you must
consider buying an RO Water Purifier.
The Dissolved Salts like Arsenic, Lead are more Dangerous than the Bacteria and
Dust. These are the Heavy Metals which Doesn’t show an immediate effect,
rather they act like a slow poison and affect your health in the long term and can
cause severe health issues like cancer and nerve damage.
Children are most affected than the adults by the TDS present in the water.
The Heavy Metals I have mentioned above have 5 Times more Gravity than that
of the Water.
Reverse Osmosis Water Gives the Safest Drinking Water even with the Water
that has High TDS levels.
Please note that a Normal RO water Purifier can not clean the Water that has
TDS levels in Thousands.
Note: Do not buy Cheap or Unbranded RO water purifiers. These types of water
purifiers will remove all the dissolved salts from the water including the useful
ones. So, Always go for an RO water purifier that comes with a TDS Controller or
Mineralizer that retains the natural Minerals in the water.
Undersink RO Purifier
Wall Mounted Ro Purifier
Both the Undersink and Wall Mounted RO Purifiers have a Storage Tank that
stores the Purified Water. Even though there is a Power Outage, the water
stored in the tank will be available for use.
Wall Mounted Reverse Osmosis Purifier in
India
The Wall Mount RO purifier is the most widely used purifier in India which
commonly have a storage capacity of 5-10 liters.
The Only Problem with the RO water purifiers is, there is some water wastage.
So, you have to use the Dirty water in a proper way; to clean the house and
mopping purposes.
The Pure Water Outlet Tap is fixed next to your Kitchen Tap and will be very easy to
operate.
These type of Ro Purifiers are fitted with the Air Pressurized RO Water storage
containers that have a storage capacity of 5 liters.
These Purifiers are often referred as Under the Counter, Kitchen Sink
Water Purifiers.
The Undersink RO Purifiers are acknowledged as the Best Water Purifiers for
Home Purpose since the are Kept under your Kitchen Sink and doesn’t occupy
much space.
The Pure Water comes from the Tap that will be fitted next to your kitchen sink
tap.
As I mentioned earlier, the waste water can be used for Outdoor purposes. You
can also use the water for Gardening.
The Undersink Water Purifier is more suited than the Wall Mount Ro Purifier.
Since the under sink RO Purifier has a pressurized tank, the pure water comes
out with more force.
The Advantages of the RO Water Purifier Outdoes the Cons of it. The above
disadvantages are very minor when compared to the Advantages of RO Water
purifier.
Now, you Know everything about the Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier. All you
have to do is pick the Right RO Purifier that suits your needs. If you have any
Queries Regarding Water Purifiers, Post them in the comments section below,

The Reverse Osmosis Water Purification System or RO Water Filter Requires
electricity to operate, and it can remove the Total Dissolved Solids that are
present in the Water.
The RO Water Purifier also offers prefiltration in case you want to purify the
Dirty Water, and the purifier removes all the virus and Germs, but it requires
electricity to boost the pressure of the Tap Water.
Reverse Osmosis Requires a lot of Water, If you input 3 Liters of Water into an
RO Purifier, you will Get 1 Litre of Pure Water and 2 Liters of Dirty Water.
You can make use of the Dirty Water for mopping the floor and cleaning the
house.
The Domestic RO Purifiers that are available online are not capable of
desalination which means they can’t convert the saline water to fresh water.
Also, unbranded RO water purifiers do not retain natural minerals.
Thre are a lot of RO Water Purifiers Available online, But a Good RO filter is
capable of not only removing the bad salts and hard metals but also retain the
natural minerals in the water.
RO vs UV
Ultra Violet Purification: How it differs from RO?
The RO process takes care of the major aspects of purification. However, traces
of contaminants like certain germs, bacteria, and microorganisms sneak through
the RO filters.
These germs can cause dangerous diseases like typhoid, dysentery, and
diarrhea. The UV purification system comes to the rescue by elimination such
dangerous bacteria from the RO purified water.
The biggest disadvantage of the RO water purifying system is that it wastes a lot
of water depending on the concentration of the impurities.
On an average, you have 1 part of pure water to every 2-3 parts of reject water.
This can be a criminal waste considering the fact that there is an extreme
shortage of water resources.
Ultraviolet filters do not waste any water. They do not use chemicals to purify
water thereby ensuring they maintain the taste of water.
RO vs UV vs UF
Ultrafiltration – How is it different from RO and UV?
The advantage of UF is that it does not require much maintenance and the filters
have the capacity to last long. These filters are not efficient in handling heavy
metals and water with high TDS levels.
UF differs from UV in the sense that it does not make use of ultraviolet radiation
to remove impurities.
Final Words – Wrapping it up
Every type of water filter, RO or otherwise has some negative aspects. A
combination of RO, UV, and UF along with TDS controllers is the best one for
every Indian home. Ensure to have this combination in the water purifier you
select.
Now you know the Difference Between RO – UV – UF Water Purifiers. If you have
