Changing your camera’s shooting angle can drastically change your image. In the following
pages, I will take you through the three main shooting angles using the same set and same
subjects. Look at the differences in each shot.

HEAD-ON
Think of there being a line on your set. In a head-on camera position, your
camera will be at a 0º angle to your set. Notice how the

Head-on camera angles are perfect for foods that look best from one require a low
side, and you don’t need to show the dimension and depth of a subject. tripod.
You will often see food shot in a head on position when looking at
product photography or menus in a restaurant. Think of drinks, sandwiches
and fries that you see on a fast food menu. Notice how you can only see the
front of the subject.
If your subject is one where you need to show more than one side, a head-
on camera angle may not be the best angle to shoot from.
The head-on camera angle requires you to have a false wall in the
background. Notice how I have a board propped up in the back of this set.
If you don’t have this, then you will see whatever is behind your subject. In
my case, that would be a garage wall.
Adding this false wall can compliment your set. You can add in a
separate color or decorate it in a way that it would add to the mood of your
set.

worry. You can move your food to the floor! Placing your
set on the floor allows you to stand over the food and
look directly down onto it.
You may notice that I use overhead camera angles
regularly in photographing FOOD. It is an angle that
gives you a lot of flexibility. It works well with cell phone
or expensive DSLR camera. It works with a variety of lens
focal lengths. If you have a large set that you are trying to
capture, a wider angle lens will work well. If you want a
smaller area captured, then you can use a macro lens or
longer focal length lens.
