Steel sees large net loss, idles blast furnace at Mon Valley Works
Coronavirus is dealing a blow to U.S. Steel in the Mon Valley. Thousands of
people could be laid off and some of them will be in our area. Channel 11 Jillian Hartmann reports on another troubling ripple effect of this pandemic. Jillian Hartmann: “Well, some people here living in Clairton tell me the U.S. Steel plan right behind me is a town life-line for many jobs and they are very upset to hear about the company’s layoffs which impacts both workers and their families”. Anonymous man: “That upsets me”. Jillian Hartmann: “U.S. Steel sent out a notice of plans to lay off 6500 (sixty five hundred) workers. However, they believe the total number of people to actually loose their jobs would be around 2700 (twenty seven hundred). A spokesperson says the significant impact from the covid-19 pandemic forces the company to idle one blast furnace at the Mon Valley Works, which includes four plants. One of them is in Clairton”. Anonymous man: “We need it. Even with the pollution, we still need it”. Jillian Hartmann: “A spokesperson tells us as there will be some layoffs in the Pittsburg area, the numbers are not expected to be large enough to trigger warn at any of the locations in our area”. Anonymous man: “This community is pretty good. If you ask for help, these people will give a help”. Jillian Hartmann: “U.S. Steel says they lost $391 Million dollars in revenue in the first quarter. They layoffs are also due to operational adjustments. And prior to this pandemic, manufacturing demand also slow down”. Jillian Hartmann: “Now U.S. Steel did not specify how many workers at the Mon Valley Works will be impacted. Reporting in Clairton, I’m Jillian Hartmann, Channel 11 News”.
