Project Overview
Objective of assigning rating to Commercial Papers by credit rating agencies is to facilitate
decisions to be taken by investors, analyst, broking houses etc. Users of credit rating can take
informed decisions. Credit rating is assigned after incorporating business, financial prospects,
governance practices and management.
This project is about measuring the performance of Commercial Paper Ratings and factors
affecting rating of short term instruments.

Learning outcomes:

The project aims to enable students to:


1. Conduct in-depth industry and firm level analysis in a given scenario
2. SWOT Analysis
3. Understand the factors affecting ratings of short term instruments
4. Develop a model to measure the performance of Commercial Papers ratings
5. Demonstrate advanced Excel and research skills

STUDY PART-1
(Company specific)
Duration: 3 weeks
Sources of data: internet, company website, newspaper articles, sectoral studies, alumnus and/or
industry resource person/s.

Week wise activity plan

Week-1
Day one: First meeting between faculty guide and interns over Zoom. Common talk points
include, project overview, learning outcomes, link with placements, assessment, zoom meeting schedule,
weekly submission requirements & expectation setting.
 Provide relevant facts about the company (year of incorporation, headquarter, promoter
etc.) in not more than 100 words.
 Explore & explain the different business verticals of the company
 Explain the ownership structure (public/private, % of shareholdings, listings)
 Provide an outline (chart) of the organizational structure
 In light of the companies Act 2013, describe the board of the company

Week-2
General Finance Functions
 What are the sources of finance for the company?
 Analyze the financial risk of the company (operating and financial leverage)
 How is the profitability of the company?
 How is the operational efficiency of the company?
 Is the company’s stock overvalued or undervalued? Should one buy for long term
investment?
General Information
 Which is the auditing firm for the company.
 Is the auditor report favorable?
 How much is the CSR spending of the company?
 What are the global SDG goals? Is the company contributing towards a sustainable
economy, environment and society?
 Present a SWOT analysis of the company

Week-3
General HR Functions
 Explain the performance management process at the company along with a linkage of the
academic models studied in the class
 Explain the recruitment & selection processes of the company. How does it relate with
your class room learning?
 Explain the training & development models used in the company.
 Is there any suggestion for these HR processes for improving process efficiency?
General Marketing Function
 Present the departmental structure chart
 Briefly explain the product range (graphical representation)
 Who are the major competitors of the company?
 Describe the sales process (b2b, b2c, c2c channel sales, combination)
 What is the pricing strategy followed (broad description)?
 Describe the popular sales promotion tools used by the company.
 Which class room marketing concepts to you observe?
 Any suggestion for improvement.

STUDY PART-2
(Sectoral)
Duration: 5 Weeks
Sources of data: internet, company website, money control.com

WEEK WISE ACTIVITY PLAN

Week-1: Chapter-1
A brief review of traditional ratio analysis as a technique for investigating corporate
performance- study of sector specific ratios.
Use of journal articles, blogs, text books to justify the choice of ratios.
Adequate details of the explanatory power of each ratio for the assigned sector.

Week-2: Chapter-2
Developing a model to measure the performance of Commercial Papers rating
Methodology is detailed. Sample size and description, data sources, statistical tools to be
described.

Week-3: Chapter-3
Discusses empirical results obtained from the sample.

Week4: Chapter-4

Practical/Managerial use of the findings


To explain:
 Which set of companies can use the findings?
 How is the finding useful for managerial decision making?
 Can you apply the developed model for testing its validity for use in practice? (Major
part of assessment)
Week-5: A 5-minute video of self, demonstrating the skills learnt/acquired/used in
conducting the project to be recorded and submitted for evaluation. (Major part of
assessment)
Targeted skills:
1. Advance Excel skills acquired/used in conducting this study
2. Performance skill for SPSS based discriminant analysis

ASSESSMENT
Total two assessments. Interim assessment after 4 weeks of SIP work (completion of part 1 of
the project) between 13-19 May, 2020. Final assessment after completion of the total SIP work
from 17-24 June, 2020.
