Introduction to tenses:
Simple present
q This tense is used to refer or indicate to
something that occurs in the present.

q Is used to describe an action, event, or


condition that is occurring in the present
while being spoken or written about.
Simple present tense: Structure

Subject + verb + phrase

They run everyday 3 km around the pentagonito.

She works 40 hours per week.

Simple past

q Also called “simple past tense”

q This tense is used to refer to something that


happened in the past.

q It is referred to actions that finished in the


past.
Simple past: affirmative

We walked 100 kms to stay here now.


I studied hard in this course.
You ate too much during the lockdown.
They drank too many alcohol in the party.

q Example: We stayed in a hotel

q We use the verb “stay” and add the “ed” at the


end of the word to turn it into a past verb

q Exceptions: irregular verbs in past tense…

Remember the structure of a sentence
in simple present…
q I cook chicken for lunch.

And now change the form to the
affirmative past tense…

Subject + will + verb + phrase
