Brass Band in the Philippines

The brass band is an ensemble of woodwind,
brass, and percussion instruments. Brass bands
usually play in fiestas, religious and other social
gatherings.
The first local band was organized in Gapan,
Nueva Ecija on November 22, 1820 by Eliodoro
Chico y Bustamante, a Tagalog priest and his
relative Lorenzo Zabat y Chico. The band was
called Banda Zabat.
During the American regime, the growth of
bands was so phenomenal that there was a rise of
school, university, and town bands. The Philippine
Constabulary Band was founded by American
Walter H. Loving on October 15, 1902. It brought
international fame to the country. After Loving’s
death, the band was reorganized in 1946 by Col.
Antonio Buenaventura who was later named
National Artist for Music in 1988.

Instrumental music is the music produced by playing musical instruments. Today, musical
instruments are classified according to the Hornböstel-Sachs system. Erich Moritz von

First Quarter
Week 2 – Day 3 and 4

MELC: Improvises simple rhythmic/melodic accompaniments to selected music from the

lowlands of Luzon (MU7LU-Ic-f-5)

WHAT’S IN

Understanding Pitch

Pitch is an element in music which refers to the highness or lowness of a note. There
are 12 pitches in a scale, and 7 of them are the most common. Let’s take a look at the C Major
Scale.

Answer the following questions:

1. How many notes are written on the staff? ______________
2. What is the starting and ending ‘letter’? ______________

do re mi fa sol la ti do

WHAT’S NEW

As you notice, the notes are written on the staff in a laddered manner. This is called a
scale. A scale is a sequence of small intervals - in Western music, those intervals are usually
tones (whole steps) and semi-tones (half steps). The scale above is a C Major scale. The sound
of this C Major scale is the most common scale that is heard and played (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la,
ti, do).
The C Major scale consists of 8 pitches or notes which starts with C, followed by D, E, F,
G, A, B and ends with C. You call this the pitch names or letter names. The do, re, mi and so
on are called sol-fa syllables. Both have the same sound but different names.
Remember the bottle xylophone that you made in the previous lesson? Try to tune it
accurately using a tuner application or by listening to the notes played in the piano keyboard (if
available).

Facts about Pitch

1. The size of the instrument affects pitch. The smaller the instrument, the higher the pitch
it produces. The bigger the instrument, the lower and bigger the pitch it produces.
2. The older we get, the pitch range we can hear decreases.
WHAT IS IT?

Using the do-it-yourself musical instruments that you have learned in the previous
lesson, you can play simple melodies of some Filipino folk songs. Let’s try this song:

Write the pitch names and sol-fa syllables of Leron Leron Sinta on a separate sheet of paper.
Look at the example below:

Le - ron Le - ron Sin - ta Bu - ko ng pa - pa – ya

Pitch names G -G F - E F-G G- A G E -G- F

Sol-fa syllables sol sol fa mi fa sol sol la sol mi sol fa

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

1. Pitch is the highness or lowness of notes.

2. A scale is a sequence of small intervals which are usually tones (whole steps) and semi-
tones (half steps).
3. You can play simple Filipino folk songs using an improvised bottle xylophone.
