Effects OF heat gain and heat loss
Q. Why do the ice cubs melt?
Q. What happens to the water when it gains heat?
The puddle of water on the road disappears after some time. What has happened
to it?

Heat gain can cause the temperature of an object to increase and heat loss can
cause the temperature to fall.
What happens to ice cream when it starts melting?

It gains heat from the surroundings and starts to melt and changes to a liquid
state. When liquid water gains heat it starts to boil and changes into steam.
Water in a puddle does not actually disappear. It has gained heat from the
surroundings and changed into water vapours in the air. When liquid water loses
enough heat, it can change into ice.
All these changes show that the gain or loss of heat can change the state of
matter. Do you remember the inter convertible states of matter

The hot lava spewed out by a volcano is molten (melted) rock from inside the
Earth, which is very hot. When the lava comes out to the surface of earth, which
is much cooler, it loses heat, cool down and changes state

When matter changes state , its temperature remains the same even though they
may gain or loss heat.
For example, the temperature of melting ice remains at 00C even as it gains heat
from the surroundings. The heat gained is used to melt the ice rather than to
increase its temperature.
