Emotional Intelligence Assignment

Case Summary:

Manoj , a newly recruited accounts officer has five sub-ordinates who reports to him. Each of
them has their own concerns that will not force them to work beyond their limitations for settling
the accounts before the deadline. Manoj is not in a position to force any of them to work over
time or help him due to their concerns. Also, Manoj’s boss is not in a position to listen to him.
How Manoj tackle this situation brings into the play of evaluating his emotional intelligence .

1. How can emotional intelligence help Manoj wade through the dilemmas he’s facing?

Problem Statement – Can Manoj able to wade himself through the dilemmas faced by him
at work place ?

Situation Analysis

It is evident from the case that Manoj lacks emotional intelligence in handling this situation
at work place. In all the examples listed in the case, Manoj always tries to stay away from
trouble by doing extra work or letting his subordinates do what they want.

 Manoj , being an empathetic person makes him emotionally weak and he is not able to
work efficiently and derive work from his subordinates.
 Manoj needs to identify his emotions and manage them . Also identify his subordinates
emotions and tackle them effectively.
 Self-management and Self- Awareness Relationship management are the elements he
needs to work on , to establish a good relationship with his employees and extract work
from them.

2. Manoj is too naïve and kind-hearted to work in a Government office. Do you agree?
Yes / No and why?

Problem Statement - Is Manoj too naïve and kind – hearted person to work in a government
office ?

Situation Analysis -

From the case we can say that Manoj can be called Kind Hearted person because from the
case we can see that Manoj is very empathetic.

For example, he always allowed Bharat to leave the office soon despite of his work load and
also he did not force Alok Nath to work over time understanding his load of work for earning
more. Also, he does not retaliate against Babita’s accusations.

Suggestions –

It is not always okay to be a kind hearted person because as we can see in this case, he
is taken for granted by his employees. Manoj should learn to be a little shrewd and take
authority too in certain situations in order to survive among such subordinates.
3. Should Manoj stay in the office from  8AM to 11PM every day to finish all the files by
himself? Yes/No and Why?

Problem Statement – Should Manoj stay at office from 8- 11 pm to finish of his work by
himself?

Situation Analysis –

No , Manoj should not stay at office till 11 pm to finish off his work. Instead, he should
delegate the work to his subordinates so the work can be completed without any delay inspite of
their concerns because completing office tasks should be handled professionally without
bringing personal problems into the picture. Work ethics should be followed by everyone in the
office.

If his subordinates still behave the same way then he can report it to his higher authority.

Finding / Suggestion–

If Manoj stay at office till 11 finishing all his work without anyone else doing, this would
only make them lethargic and they would end up taking advantage of him because they are aware
that he would do all the work.

He should inform his subordinates in advance about the work and the deadlines. He should
also tell them if the dead lines are not met, strict action would be taken.
4. Should Manoj resign from office because of ‘Babita-issue’? Yes/No and why?

Problem Statement –

Should Manoj resign from the office due to issue of babita at his work place ?

Situation Analysis

From the case we got to know that babita is Ex – girlfriend of Manoj. Although Manoj is the
head of Babita, whenever Manoj asks Babita to finish her work or to complete some specific
work related issue she over reacts saying she is sexually harassed by Manoj because of their past.
This affects Manoj mentally and also professionally. It is even awkward to go complain to higher
official as it involves personal issues between Manoj and Babita. Hence, it creates a bad situation
for Manoj to act right.

Finding / Suggestion-

Despite seeing such behavior of Babita, Manoj remains silent because of Jeevan. Manoj should
take this issue to the top management because though he is not wrong , his impression for
harassing a lady at work place might put him in a big trouble which would affect his reputation.
5. How should Manoj “tackle” each of the subordinate? Dissect the possible consequences
he will face for each of those actions.

Tackling the issue of Subordinate

Manoj can tackle Bharat in the following ways –

 Bharat can be asked to move closer to the company so it will be convenient for him to
travel.
 Manoj can ask top management to provide transportation facilities to those employees
who stay far away from the office.
 The management would definitely consider the request because of his work experience.

Manoj can tackle Alok in the following ways –

 Manoj can talk to the HR to provide Alok an increment based on his performance
rating .
 If not Manoj could ask him to leave the current job and find a better one if he is
dissatisfied with the salary provided to him.
Manoj can tackle Jeevan in the following ways –

 Manoj can try to make him understand the situation in a professional way but if that does
not work then strict action must be taken.
 If Manoj is not able to talk to him directly, he can approach the top management to do
something about it.

Manoj can tackle Babita in the following ways –

 He should first directly approach Babita to let her know that personal and professional
life are different and must not be mixed up .Also, explain to her how this makes the
workplace an hostile environment i.e. revenge is not the solution for any wrong done.
 He can also take it to his higher authority to look into the situation, may be, HR manager.

Manoj can tackle Vivek in the following ways –

 Manoj can hire another person for the Accounts department or he can tell the HR not to
drag in his accountant to do the HR tasks.
 He can take this issue to manager saying that the employees must only work for their
respective departments.
