Oral Tradition Simulation

Name: Lindsay Ptasienski

Date: November 17, 2010

Grade Level/Subject: 6th Grade Social Studies

Co-Operating Teacher: Zachary Cain

Goal: Follow through with classroom rules I have set; give students specific positive feedback rather than general.

Prerequisite Knowledge: Since this is a review session, the students should know the answers to all of the questions.
This review activity requires the students to know about Ancient Mesopotamia.

Approximate Time: 42 minutes

Student Objectives/Student Outcomes:

- Students will be able to recall information taught previously to answer the questions regarding the subject of
Ancient Mesopotamia.
- Students will work as teams to decide upon answers.
- Students will use the Smart Board clickers to answer the questions presented on the Smart Board.

Content Standards:

18.A.3 Explain how language, literature, the arts, architecture and traditions contribute to the development and
transmission of culture.

Materials/Resources/Technology:

Smart Board
Smart Board Clickers
Mesopotamia Worksheets

Implementation:

The teacher will tell the students that they will be playing a review game today. Students will divide into three groups
assigned by the teacher. Once they are placed in their groups, they will be given a Smart Board clicker that will have a
number. That number will be their team name. Once students have their teams, the lowest number will start first, and
will go in order. Questions reviewing their Mesopotamia unit will be placed on the board, and each team will need to
click their answer as quickly as possible. Each correct answer will be worth 10 points. The team who answers the
question first, will be asked to share their answer with the class once each team has put in their response. If their answer
is incorrect, they will receive -10 points. If their answer is correct, they will earn 20 points. If they get the question
wrong, the team who answered second will get a chance to answer, and so on.

Time
Opening of lesson: (Objectives, hook, behavior expectations)

At the beginning of the class, I will ask the students for their eyes facing front, and their
mouths closed. I will then state that in order for us to complete this activity in a fun way,
then I expect respectful participation from the entire class, which means raised hands and
a mature participation in the game. State that they have a choice: they can either
participate in the group game, or they can complete the activity individually. If they
prove to be listening and participating, then they can do the group activity.
After the establishment of expectations, I will discuss with the students ask the students
what ancient country we have been studying for the last few weeks. (Ancient
Mesopotamia). I will then ask them what parts of Mesopotamia that we have studied
(Arts and Culture, Achievements and Inventions, Geography, Government, Daily Life,
Writing, Economy and Trade, and Religion). “That is a lot of different areas to study, a
lot of information about one ancient country. So, to wrap that all up for you, I have put
together a clicker quiz/game. I have made the normal clicker quiz into a game.”

I will then explain the directions to the kids: They will be placed in three groups, and
given one clicker for their group. They will need to work together to get the answers as
quickly as possible. Each question answered correctly, whether you answered first or
last will receive a base point value of 10 points. Any question answered incorrectly will
get 0 points. The team who answers first will be asked to share their answer with the
class. If they get it correct, they will receive 20 points, if they get it wrong they will get
-10 points, and the question will be passed on to the team who answered the question
second, and so on. They will have 30 seconds to answer each question.

Ask if the students have any questions about the game or the rules.

I will then break the classroom into three groups, and they will be required to move into
groups together. I will administer the clickers and record which group has which
number. I will be in charge of keeping the score at my desk for the game.

Procedures: Include critical thinking questions and accommodations for individual needs
____
Accommodations:

-Be sure that Kora and Sierra are not together.

-Since Emily and Nancy are the more advanced girls in the classroom, be sure that they are not
place on the same team.
____

Once all of the students are in their groups and ready to go, I will turn on the Smart Board and
place the questions on the board one at a time. The students will be given 30 seconds to answer
each question. At the end of the game, the points will be totaled, and the winning team will each
get Smarties for being smart. The rest of the class will also get a piece of candy if they played
appropriately.

Summary/Closing:

At the end of the class period, the teacher will hand out the candies, collect the clickers, and
congratulate the students on a good game of review.

Extension:

If the students end early, the teacher will hand out the crossword puzzle or wordsearch for them
to work on until the bell rings.

Student Assessment:

Students will be assessed by in-class participation in the activity. Each student will be awarded
10 extra credit points for participating, and the team who wins the game will receive 50 extra
credit points. Remind them that some may need those points.
