Last year, during the “between season” hiatus of the show I was working on, I was able to work

get a job as a cutter/tailor for a few months in the

costume shop of Marvel’s Black Panther. When Ruth Carter, the costume designer, learned I knew how to machine knit and owned several ma-
chines, she had me make a scarf for the character Nakia. She told me she wanted it textural and made of many different types of stitches, then
gave me a reference photo and the basic range of colors she wanted used. I had a lot of fun coming up with the resulting infinity scarf.
She contacted me recently asking if I would be willing to make a pattern that she could send out in response to the many requests she had been
receiving. Since I still had all of my original project notes as well as the information for each of the yarns that were used, I said I’d be happy to.
Here’s the result in chart form.
Have fun and enjoy! Jeff Gillies 3/1/2018

Instructions
Cast on 84 stitches in waste yarn using a provisional cast-on. Using Noro’s Silk Garden, begin with Row 1 and follow
the charts. The colored chart provides a map for yarn changes. A key to the chart’s symbols is below. When you’ve
worked your through the charts, do NOT cast off. Knit an addt’l 10 rows in waste yarn and block the work.

Explanation for Diagonal Eyelet Join, (rows 99—144)

This join is done in two steps.
Step 1: remove stitches 62 thru 84 and hold them on waste yarn or stitch holder. Continue knitting the remaining
stitches. Every 2nd row, knit the 2 inside edge stitches together for a simple decrease. Every 4th row, yarnover the 3rd
stitch and knit the 4th and 5th stitches together to create eyelets. At row 144 take off the remaining stitches (1 thru 38)
and hold on waste yarn or stitch holder.
Step 2: You will now increase in purl stitches, mirroring the decreases/eyelets just completed in knit stitches. Pick up the
held stitches #62 thru #84. Change yarn to Dandelion by madelinetosh. Every 2nd row, increase 1 stitch along the
inside edge of the stitches. Every 4th row, make the increased stitch thru the hole of the corresponding eyelet, joining
the two knitted parts. At row 144, pick up the remaining held stitches #1 thru #38 and continue following the charts.

Finishing
Lay scarf out right side up on a flat surface. Fold both ends in so they meet in the center, butted up. The wrong side of
each is now facing up. Flip only one of the ends over from side to side so that it is now right side up. Stitch #1 of one
end is now opposite stitch #84 of the other end. Graft the ends together, making a Mobius loop. Remove waste yarn.
