Lesson Idea Name: Kahoot Game

Content Area: Introductory Warm up Math Game
Grade Level(s): 2nd grade
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE2.NBT.1 Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens,
and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. Understand the following as special cases:

1. 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens — called a “hundred.”

2. The numbers 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six,
seven, eight, or nine hundreds (and 0 tens and 0 ones).

Technology Standard Addressed:

Analyst 7a. Provide alternative ways for students to demonstrate competency and reflect on their learning
using technology.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The kahoot activity that I have created is a warmup introductory activity that the students will participate in
to start the lesson. The place value warm up kahoot gives students the practice of matching a word to a
number. Prior to this activity there will be multiple lessons on what is place value and what a number phrase

tells you. One lesson could be on how to build a number sentence. A fun game could be to have the students
stand up in front of the class with a piece of paper that has a number on it. The students can rearrange
themselves to create a number sentence to where the whole class has to announce the number that is made.
For the teacher’s part of this activity, I will write the number sentence on the board so the students can see a
visual of the actual words and the number. Lessons like these will give the students an idea of reading a
number sentence and matching with the numbers given.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☒ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: To start with the students will grab a laptop,
iPad, phone, or some kind of other device. The Kahoot game will be pulled up on the big screen where the pin
number is shown for students to enter it in to get access to the game. On the screen, it will show how many
children have logged on and when everyone is ready to begin the game. When the game starts, it will pop up
with a question that says, “Choose the number that goes with the word”. From there the students must pick
the number that the word is spelling. Once everyone has picked their answer it will show many got the
answer right and how many picked other answers. This warmup activity is only 5 questions long and gives the
students 20 seconds to read and pick their answer. Once the game is over, the teacher has access to all the
student answers, and he/she can see what each child knows and don’t know. Once the game is over, I would
also go over the answers with the students for them to understand what is right and what is wrong. This
activity should take 5-10 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Yes, I will pre-select the answers to all the questions because once the question is answered, the students are
able to see their own answer and if they got it right or wrong.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the Kahoot is over, I will go over each question and answer with the students. When learning place
value, I want to make sure all of my students understand and are able to comprehend what they should be
doing. While going through each question and answer, I will make sure to answer any questions the students
might have about any of the problems.
How will the data be used?
For this activity, I am collecting data to understand where each child is at with the comprehension of place
value. This activity will be put under a participation grade. Even though it is graded for participation, it gives

me an idea of where each student is at with place value. I will also discuss the data, anonymously of course,
with the whole class for them to learn as well.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I hope to learn how my class responds to Kahoot. If they do well with the warm-up game, I know I will be able
to incorporate more of those into an everyday or every week lesson. I hope these games on kahoot helps
students by giving them a refresher and challenges their knowledge on certain subjects.
Reflective Practice:
I feel this warm-up activity can impact student’s learning by continuously practicing place value. To extend
this lesson, I could make the game longer, rather than just 5 questions.
