1. GENERAL

Multi-Voltage Transformer-Rectifier (MVTR) units shall be used to provide impressed current

cathodic protection to pipelines and well casings. Each unit shall be completely self-protected
and all components (i.e. transformer and rectifier) shall be mounted within one common tank
housing of “sealed tank” type construction.

The transformer shall be sized, designed and equipped with adjustment features to permit the
rectifier to deliver the specified output under all operating conditions.

2. DESIGN PARAMETERS

The units shall comply with the following general and particular specification requirements.

2.1 General Specification

Step-down transformer and rectifier as identified in Sections 2.3 and 2.4 below are to be oil
immersed and installed in a common tank. Attached to the tank shall be the ac and dc
enclosures containing the respective accessories and termination devices.
Cooling class : Oil Immersed/Self Cooled (OA)
Temperature rise : 55 ºC Ambient temperature : 55ºC(maximum)
Design temperature : 40 ºC (24 hours’ average)
Construction : Sealed tank as per ANSI standards
Cover : Gasketed and bolted to main tank as per ANSI standards.
Safety : Assembly shall be tamper proof as per the ANSI standards.
Devices : The following protection/indicating devices shall be supplied:
Oil temperature gauge
Oil level gauge
Pressure relief device c/w visual indicator
Pressure vacuum gauge
Maintenance : Each unit shall be complete with the following:
Top filter press connection valve
Bottom combination type filter press, drain and sample valve
Bottom entry/exit shall be via removable gland plates.
Termination lugs shall be supplied for each cable conductor
(this includes ac, dc and all grounding points)
Sunshade : Suitable for site assembly. Shade to extend 750mm (minimum)
beyond the equipment outline and provide a free air space of
500mm (minimum) above the equipment.
Grounding : Tank and compartment grounding points shall be complete with
lugs suitable for 16mm2 stranded copper cable.
Hardware : Handles, locks and hinges shall be of stainless steel.
Lifting and jacking provisions shall be provided in accordance
with ANSI standards.
Tank base :Units shall be mounted on a base frame (I-beam or RSJ) which
fully supports the equipment and which is suitable for jacking
and skidding.
Standards : Each unit shall comply with the applicable criteria outlined in
ANSI Standard #C57.12.10 as well as related standards and
codes identified therein.
Surface finish : All external surfaces, including sunshade, shall be blast cleaned
to ISO8501, grade Sa2.5, Zinc flame sprayed (100 µm
Page 3 of 6 ENG-TS-X-SP-0012.doc
thickness) and polyester powder coated (80 µm minimum
thickness); finish colour light grey.
Fuses :Each unit shall be supplied with one complete, spare set of all
fuses, mounted within the appropriate termination chamber.
Rating plate :Stainless steel rating plate is to be fixed to the outside of the unit,
stating manufacturer's name, unit serial number, date of
manufacture, design temperature, ac input and dc output ratings
as a minimum.

2.2 AC Input Voltage

Input power will be obtained from the ‘Delta’ connected secondary of a down hole pump
transformer with varying nominal voltages which are subject to ± 15% manual tap changer
adjustment. Equipment shall be designed for the following primary voltages :
Nominal Voltage Range
2400 Volts, 3 phase 2040 – 2760 Volts
1200 Volts, 3 phase 1020 – 1380 Volts
1000 Volts, 3 phase 850 – 1150 Volts
800 Volts, 3 phase 680 – 920 Volts

2.3 AC Input Specification

a) Input voltage : Variable, as stated above

b) Transformer rating : 25kVA, 3 phase, 60 Hz
c) Transformer windings : Copper
d) Primary winding : Star connected primary
e) Neutral point : Grounded externally (no internal grounding)
f) BIL : 45kV
g) Fuses : Fuse sets shall be provided to protect the unit at each
of the rated input currents at the specified voltage
ranges. The sets shall be mounted in a fuse rack
within the primary compartment. Fuse selection
criteria shall be posted on the interior wall as an
engraved stainless steel plate. Operator will select,
from the rack mounted fuse sets, and install the
appropriate fuses.
h) Load break switch : Two position (ON-OFF), gang operated
i) Protection : Fuses shall be supplied in each phase
j) Meter : Single phase voltmeter, 0 – 3000V (250o) scale,
complete with protection fuses
k) Termination chamber : Side wall mounted, IP65 rated, adequately sized for
all devices and termination points

2.4 DC Output Specification

a) Voltage output range : 5 to 80 V dc (or in accordance with BOQ)
b) Output current : 150A dc (or in accordance with BOQ)
c) DC control method :Manual, on-load, coarse-medium-fine selector
switches.
d) DC voltage control : Adjustable in steps of 2 Volts.
e) Rectifier rating : 100% oversized.
f) Surge protection : Rectifier input to be c/w surge protectors.
g) DC output protection : MCB, 2 pole (Square D manufacture only).
h) DC chamber : All dc termination points such as dc meters, breaker
and similar are to be mounted in a separate (to that
from ac) IP65 rated, padlockable enclosure.
