Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 to October 7, 1849) was an American
writer, poet, critic and editor best known for evocative short stories and
poems that captured the imagination and interest of readers around the
world. His imaginative storytelling and tales of mystery and horror gave
birth to the modern detective story.
Edgar Allan Poe lived in Baltimore with his aunt Maria Clemm and his
cousin Virginia. He began to devote his attention to Virginia, who became
his literary inspiration as well as his love interest. The couple married in
1836 when she was only 13 years old. In 1847, at the age of 24 — Virginia
passed away from tuberculosis. Poe was overcome by grief following her
death, and although he continued to work, he suffered from poor health and
struggled financially until his death in 1849.

2. What happened to Annabel Lee? Cite significant events?
3. Cite lines which support the idea that the poem is an idealized account of
Poe’s wife, Virginia.
4. What is the dominant feeling in the poem?
5. How does the poem illustrate the timelessness of love?
Application
Directions: Just like how Edgar Allan Poe wrote for Virginia, write also a
short poem about someone you admire. Try to make the poem melodious
by making the end lines rhyme.
