Difficulties with True False & Not Given

1. Paraphrasing. You must be prepared for the words in the statement to be
paraphrased in the passage. This means you really need to know your
vocabulary.
2. You are looking for meaning. Many students just try to match words but you
actually need to match meaning and check the content of the information
given. Some times the same words are used but the meaning is not the same –
this is one common difficulty with choosing the right answer.
3. Not Given and False (No)
1. Not Given means the entire statement is not given in the passage. Maybe
part of the statement is given but not the whole statement. Watch out for
that!! Try to find the whole meaning in the passage.
2. False means the passage contradicts the statement. Don’t forget you are
not just looking for an opposite meaning, you are also looking for
contradicting information.

Summary of IELTS Reading True False Not Given Tips

Below is a list of the main Tips for IELTS True False Not Given Reading
Questions. However, you should watch the video to understand them clearly for
maximum benefit.

1. Spend time analysing the statement in the question before you try to find the
answer
2. Many words will be paraphrased so watch out for that (for example, work =
employment / changing = altering)
3. Don’t match just key words, you are aiming to match meaning. Some of the
key words might be the same in the passage but it doesn’t mean the answer is
true or yes.
4. The meaning of false or no is that the statement contradicts the claims or
information in the passage. This means the statement gives one meaning but
the passage gives another meaning – therefore the statement is FALSE.
5. Not Given means that the whole meaning of the statement is not in the
passage. Some key words might be found but not the full meaning of the
statement.
6. You can write T instead of True on your answer sheet but make sure your
handwriting is clear.

https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-true-false-not-given-essential-tips/ 2/87
9/26/2019 IELTS Reading True False Not Given: Essential Tips

7. The answers follow the order of information in the passage for these
questions. Other types of reading questions might not have answers that come
in order.
8. Learn common challenges or problems that you have in reading. Make a list
of paraphrases you have struggled with.

There are no fixed rules if you read the questions or the passage first. There
are also no fixed rules about whether you do passage 1 first or passage 3 first. You have
1 hour to tackle three passages in the order you wish.

near 400 million. So, it is really confusing. In some questions, even subtle differences are

million.

Hey Liz,

I have a doubt about one of questions I saw in the Cambridge practice test.
Question : It is inadvisable for children who are afraid of heights to use the Mobile
Climbing Wall.
Text in the passage:
As climbing is different from the usual team games practised at schools, we’ve found that
some students who don’t usually like participating in sports are willing to have a go on
the mobile climbing wall. If you’re concerned that some children may not want to take
part because they feel nervous if they climb, then please
be assured that our instructors will support them up to a level which they’re comfortable
with. They will still benefit greatly from the experience.

I answered it as NG but the actual answer is given as False.. I have a question here, are
“afraid of heights” and “feel nervous if they climb” the same? Please clarify and thanks in
advance.

9/26/2019 IELTS Reading True False Not Given: Essential Tips
You are trying to match words. The general meaning is the same IN THIS CONTEXT.
You must not try to match words by taking them out of the context. If children are
nervous about climbing, it is obviously because they are afraid of heights – that’s the
reason they are nervous. It is a paraphrase which produces the same results in English.
Always keep the context in mind and do not separate the words from the context. The
passage also continues to say that the instructors will help the children only to go as
high as they are comfortable with – this again reinforces the meaning that children are
scared of heights and instructors will not push them to go higher than they can handle.
This really is a great example of learning to read for meaning.

Hi Liz

Thanks a lot for for your priceless responses to our queries, we get to learn a lot from your
replies.

I have appeared for IELTS many times and I really need a high band score in all the
modules. I have purchased all your study materials and no doubt it appears to be the
most reliable information. In fact, only after referring to your advanced lessons I could
jump from 6.5 to 7.5 in writing.

One of my query is from IDP practice test 5 ( T/F/NG)

Passage-
Pen to paper (Writers’ group)
Newly-established, this group is aimed at budding writers. Guest speakers who are
already acclaimed authors give fortnightly talks to our members. All talks are always
well-subscribed, so advance booking is essential.
Venue: The Queen’s Hotel, Eastbourne on the 3rd of the month.

Question- The Writers’ group requires a subscription fee.

I think that answer should be NG, however the answer is False.

Could you please enlighten on this.

Hello Liz,
For the 3rd example,

The passage says “Just over 400 million” which means it is definitely over 400 million.
The question says “about 400 million” which means it can be either li le over 400 million

https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-true-false-not-given-essential-tips/ 6/87
9/26/2019 IELTS Reading True False Not Given: Essential Tips
or li le less 400 million but we cannot assume it is definitely over 400 million.

In such case, how you are saying, the answer is “True” ?

Reply

Liz says
May 2, 2019 at 9:47 am

You are being asked to say whether the passage contains any information
that indicates it is over – yes the passage does contain that information. The word
“about” includes “over”. If the passage can confirm the statement, it is true. If the
passage says that it is definitely not over, it is false. If the passage doesn’t give that type
of information, it is NG. Don’t get confused between finding the information of the
passage in the statement and finding the information of the statement in the passage.
You are working from the wrong direction.

Hi Liz, I have an important question. For NG case, is it mandatory the text or

synonyms of the question has to be present in the paragraph? Or it can be a deduced
answer too. Meaning :
In the test Tea cultivation process was detailed : Selecting the seeds, selected the right soil,
right temperature. right water for “pure tea”
Question : Tea cultivation is an easy process.
T/F/NG

So now do I need to answer F based on the explanation statements in the text or should it
be an NG since there was no mention about the particular easy/tough ..? I’m confused..

Reply

Liz says

Your task is to decide if the information in the statement is given in the

passage.
TRUE = the passage shows the statement is correct
FALSE = the passage shows there is a mistake in the sentence – it is wrong or opposite
NG = we do not know if it is true or false because the passage doesn’t give enough
information for us to know
Does this help?

says another thing. Am I right?

Reply

Liz says

If it shows something different, it is contradictory. The words

“opposite” and “contradictory” do not have exactly the same meaning. Opposite –
I’m sure you know. Contradictory – when something shows it is wrong, it is false,
it is not correct. A FALSE answer means the passage shows the statement is
opposite or contradictory.

If the drive does not give change, you must give him the exact amount of
money. The passage says “…with the correct money if possible.”. This means it is not
actually required to give the right amount.
It is important that you understand the meaning instead of matching words.

Hi Liz,
Sorry could not understand your answer. so the answer is False or NG ?
Coz as per your video on TFNG – if the information is half given or missing that
means it is NG.
So there is no mention of bus driver refusing change or giving change. The passage
just informs the reader to have change if possible.

Would really appreciate if you could elaborate a bit on this, as i am facing tough
time in TFNG and Matching Headlines to paragraph in reading and have my exam

Liz says
March 21, 2019 at 7:10 pm

If you ask me – Do I need to give 50 cents for the bus? Will the driver
give me change? Can I give him $1 or do I need to give him exactly 50 cents.
If I reply, you can give exact money if possible – this means it is also possible not
to give exact money. This means you can give him $1 instead.
So do you think that in this case the driver will keep the change? Or do you think
the drive will give you change if you pay $1 for a 50 cents ride?
If the passage said “you must give exact money” – then it is not possible to give
$1. The passage shows there is a possibility not to give exact money – which
means you will get change.
This is about understanding the meaning of English. In English, we say this to
mean – the driver can give you change.
It is about meaning – do not match words.

The question is “Coffee arrived in Europe after the 17th century”. You need
to see if the coffee arrived after the 17th century or not. Did it arrive after? Did it arrive
during? Did it arrive before? If it arrive during or before, the answer is FALSE. FALSE
means the answer is opposite or wrong. In this case, it shows the statement is

Hello Liz,

Could you please advise the following questions? These questions are from Cambridge
GT 13.

Passage:
Term One: Technical classes in acting, voice, movement, applied movement and
characterisation, music, singing, film, radio and professional development. The term
finishes with an internal production given for tutors and students.
Term Two: All technical classes in continue from term one. There is an internal
performance of a one-act play, the recording of an audio showreel at professional studio
and the Showcase Drama in front of an invited audience including casting directors and
agents.
Term Three: Technical classes continue with additional focus on audition technique,
workshops and masterclasses. This term includes a public performance of a play outdoors
in the grounds of Blenheim Palace, and the chance to act a short film recorded on location
by a professional crew.
Question1:
Students will act in a performance in front of their classmates at the end of the first term.
(the answer is TRUE, however, from my understanding, the answer is FALSE because it
happen in term two )

Question2:

Student are required to make a film on their own in the last term of the course.
(The answer is FALSE, but my answer is NG because from the passage it does not say
anything about ‘required’)

Reply

Liz says
December 5, 2018 at 1:45 pm

Question 1: the keywords are: internal production. This means that the
people participating in the course will perform in front of tutors and students. So, the
answer is “true” students will perform in front of other students.
Question 2: The answer is “false” the passage shows that this information is not correct:
students are not required to make a film instead they are given a chance to act in a film.
False = the information is incorrect – there is a mistake in it.

Hi Liz, are we allowed to make deductive reasonings?

Yes the passage says “internal production for students and tutors” but a lot of
groups make up the internal production of a school, can we not reason that it is the
tutors that performed for their fellow tutors and the students? Or perhaps the non-
academic staff on behalf of the school. Since it was not specified in the passage as
students I would have concluded it is NG instead of assuming or making deductive
reasoning.

“internal production” relates to the students on the course or in the

university. If it did not involve students, it would say “internal production by
staff” to differentiate.

The passage stated that in TERM ONE “the term finishes with an

Hello Liz,

Please can you help me in answering this question?

Although the taipan is the deadliest Australian snake, few snakes can match the sinister
reputation of the eastern tiger snake (notechis scutatis). However, recent observations
indicate that their ferocity and aggressiveness are not as bad as once thought and that
actually they are fairly timid.

Question: Tiger snakes got their name from their supposed aggressiveness.

Hello Liz,

First of all, I would like to thank you for all the helpful tips and advice you have been
providing on this website. It is of great use. I appeared for the academic test in 2012 and

Now I am preparing for the general test and feel really lucky to find you here:).
I request you for your time reading this and help clear my doubt, please. I am a bit
confused on a reading section question that is in the practice material booklet provided by
the British Council. I am sharing few lines here that formed the base for the question:

https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-true-false-not-given-essential-tips/ 16/87
9/26/2019 IELTS Reading True False Not Given: Essential Tips
Volunteers:
Thank you for volunteering to work one on one with some of the students at our school
who need extra help.

True, False, Not Given question :

As a volunteer, you will be helping students individually.

I answered False as the passage suggests “with some students who need extra help”
while the question doesn’t say “all”, could the answer be true instead? the answer key in
the book shows true.
I will be really grateful to you for helping me with this.

Thank you once again!

Best Regards
Zehen.

You are trying to match words instead of meaning. You also haven’t fully
prepared the answers for T, F and NG. See below:
True – when you work as a volunteer you will help students one on one.
False – when you work as a volunteer you will NOT be helping students one on one.
NG – it is not stated if you will help students one on one or not
This means the answer is TRUE. It is true that you will be helping students one on one.
The statement in the question does not quantify how many, so it is true. If the
statement in the question had stated: you will help ALL students one on one – it would
be false. But the statement does not say this at all.

It does not say if it is a cold or hot substance. The words “used as a coolant”
indicate how it is used – they do not indicate the temperature of the substance. So, in
this case, it is a problem with your understanding of the English language used.

Hi Liz,
I am new to the particularities of IELTS. I would be quite grateful if you could clear my
doubts regarding a TFNG question I recently encountered in class. The question is…..
-to be eligible to take part in the special Olympics, the athlete has to be not only less than
intellectually capable, but must also be lacking in a number of other functions.

The paragraph corresponding to the question goes on like this…

Special olympics was created and developed to give individuals with an intellectual
disability the opportunity to train and compete in sport activities. No person shall,on the
grounds of gender, race, religion, colour, national origin or financial constraint be excluded
from participation in,or be denied the benefits of,or otherwise be subjected to
discrimination under any programme or activity of special Olympics. Flexibility is left to
the Local,Region/Zone,Chapter and National special Olympics organisations for
determining the eligibility of the participants because of the variety of situations and
needs that exist in the many localities where Special Olympics programmes have been
and will be instituted.Inclusion is preferred to exclusion when eligibility is in question.
Individuals who have both an intellectual disability and multiple disabilities may
participate in Special Olympics programmes and competitions.

I marked it as a false statement but the answer was the true. Iwould have agreed if not for
the first sentence which says that Special Olympics was created for individuals with
intellectual disability.Although the last sentence does confirm the statement in
question, would it be ok to think that the Special Olympics which as per the passage was
specially made to encourage individuals with intellectual disability in sport activities, will
not let them participate as they have no other disability? Thank you in advance for your
reply.

Reply

Liz says
May 12, 2018 at 4:09 pm

The passage shows that the Special Olympics was created for people with
intellectual disability, but the criteria for participation MUST include another disability
as well – being only intellectually disabled is NOT enough to take part. The first
sentence shows who it was aimed at, the last paragraph shows the criteria for taking
part. Your question is about taking part.

You don’t need to write a line under them. The instructions are asking for
your opinion – are the advs more than the disadv OR vice versa – you need to decide –
you need to present your answer. All my advice is based on my IELTS examiner

The passage shows that you need to use the correct money if possible. The
meaning is that you should use the correct money, but if you don’t have it, you can use
the incorrect money (and this means you will get change). Look at the meaning – not
the words.

Now my question
29. Iannucci delivered the 30th annual MacTaggart Lecture. (True/False/Not given)

From above,
a. The statement given is no where contradicted in the passage.
I am clearly going with your rule of making the statement negative and
checking if the passage states it or not.
b. The passage doesn’t state if it is his first lecture so he could have given any
number of lectures before 40th which can include 30th, 35th etc.
I second Arjun here that the answer should be NOT GIVEN.
Kindly explain why my deduction is wrong.

Do not confuse some and most. They are not opposites. A contradictory
statement would be “All people ….” and “some people …” OR “All people ….” and
“most people ….”. These are contradictory because one statement says 100% and the
other is not clear about how many but it does show that it is NOT ALL. The words
some and most both meaning NOT ALL. They do not contradict. So, this answer

https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-true-false-not-given-essential-tips/ 26/87
9/26/2019 IELTS Reading True False Not Given: Essential Tips
should be FALSE. Both words “some / many” do not have clear percentages and for
this reason are not contradictory. Only ALL and NO have clear percentages = 100% /
0%.

Hi Liz,
Regarding TFNG practice test Passage 3 Question 6.
Passage:
In 1804, only weeks after Napolean proclaimed himself Emperor, Beethoven debuted his
Symphony no. 3 in Napolean’s honor. It was his most grandest and most original work to
date – so unlike anything heard before that through weeks of rehearsal, the musicians
could not figure out how to play it.
Question: Contemporary musicians struggled to perform Symphony No. 3 on the opening
night.
My Answer: TRUE
Given Answer: FALSE
My Explanation:
Key indicators in the question:
Contemporary Musicians –> Musicians of the same era or of the same time.
Opening Night –> Debuted.
Struggled –> could not figure out.
by matching all information with the passage I answered TRUE.

Please let me know what information I misinterpreted.

Is it because the passage says Beethoven Debuted and no one else; there were no
musicians.
And does it mean In general musicians finds Symphony 3 difficult.
what does the hyphen “-” between the sentence in above passage mean.

Thanks and regards.

For the answer to be false, you need to information information that shows
humans can alter the recharge rate or that something else alters the recharge rate.
However, the passage does not give information about what alters the recharge rate.

THE PASSAGE

Faren, the King of England has spent much time outside England fighting wars in the
France and the Middle-East. Faren was considered a good king by the people. In the year
1299, Faren died and his brother Peter became king. Peter continues to fight wars in the
Middle-East and France but he kept losing the ba les. He was in need of more money, so,
his government in England ruthlessly demanded more taxes. Peter exploited the loyalty
of the Barons who became very unhappy. They rebelled and took over London.

Faren did not live in England while he was the King. FALSE
The people used to pay a lot of tax to Faren. FALSE
Peter was a be er king than Faren. NOT GIVEN
Peter was not successful at war. TRUE

( Could you please tell me how to tackle number 1, it is a guess i tool. Should I look at the
passage or statement first.

You look at the statement first. The statement said that he NEVER lived in
England. The passage says differently. The passage says he spent much of his time
outside English. You need to review language “much of his time” means a lot – it
doesn’t mean all. This means he spent a li le bit of his time in England. So, the
statement is wrong = false.

as a number and check the instructions.

The instructions say

Choose No more than three words and/or a number.

the paragraph says

Course dates are From January 7,2017 till March 11,2017 (students can not join the
course once it begins)

the question is after which date students can not join classes ?

How should i write the date?

I wrote it as Seventh of January 2017. (has 3 words and a number)

Does the year need to be included and is it counted as a number ? If yes then could
we also write it as January Seventh 2017

You can write Jan 7 or JANUARY 7 or 7 January. The year doesn’t need
to be included because they are both in the same year and also because you can
only have one number – so you must choose.

Hi Liz, thank you for all your efforts.

about true and false, I looked up the word some in the dictionary and it said that it can
mean a large amount of something so when can I consider the word some in that
meaning?
Another thing, you mentioned in one of the videos that we can write the words on the
answer sheet in upper case or lower case so would it be a problem if I write the first le er
only in upper case?
Thank you

The meaning of the words in a dictionary are not related to how IELTS use
these words. IELTS have chosen those words and have given their own meaning of the
words. You can write the first le er only but if it is unclear, you will get a lower score.

Statement- The bike foundry sells only-second bicycles. (TRUE)

Passage- The bike foundry aims to promote cycling and to make an environmental-
friendly means of transport and leisure available to as many people as we can. All
our bikes are hand-restored by our team and come with a 3 months guarantee.

Statement- the Bike basics course is aimed at new cyclists (NOT GIVEN)
Passage- this is a 3 hour course which will teach you everything you need to know to
keep on top of simple maintiaince issues like looking after brakes and gares and how
to repair a puncture. By the end of the course you will know how to take good care
of your bike.

Statement- snacks are provided for participants on the maintainence training courses
(FALSE)

Passage- courses are run regularly for groups of up to 4 trainees. we use professional
mechanics tool and employ experienced staff. Most importantly, we have tea and
coffee making facilities and a fridge where partcipants can keep their sandwiches.
unfortunately our training room is up a flight of stairs.

Reply

Liz says

1. “hand-restored” means that bikes have been used before and have
been repair by hand. This means the information is given in the passage but you
can’t see a direct paraphrase.
2. The passage does not give any information about who the course is aimed at. It
stated what people will learn – not which people will go on the course.
3. snacks = food. The passages shoes that the course provides drinks – it does not
provide food. It provides a fridge where you can put your own sandwiches (this
means sandwiches which you have brought from home).

Hi Liz: The passage says that the course provides drinks and there is
a fridge to keep sandwiches. However, nothing has been mentioned about
snacks. We do not know whether they provide snacks or not. So the answer
should be not given. Could you please clarify?

Reply

Sandwiches are snacks. A snack can be fruit, sandwich, biscuit,

noodles, chocolate etc.

Reply

Sriram says

Thank you Liz. I am still not clear as to how we can derive the
statement that no snacks will be provided.
Things that are obvious in the passage:
1 drinks(tea and coffee) making facilities
2 fridge to keep your own sandwiches. (but this statement does not clearly
indicate whether any snacks/sandwiches are provided for participants)
Am I missing something here?. Could you please help me understand
which line in the passage directly corresponds to “snacks will not be
provided” ?

Reply

Liz says

Sandwiches are made by yourself and brought by yourself.

It means they are not provided – you make them yourself.

Hi Liz,

Thanks a lot for all the useful material on IELTS.

I have a question for you. This appeared in my General Test on 9-Sep. The candidate
needs to answer – True or False or Not Given

Passage was about “New Garbage Bins”. There was just one sentence regarding the
“timing” of garbage collection – “Residents shall keep their bins outside by 7 AM or they
might miss the service”

Question was – “Garbage Collection takes place after 7 AM”.

Kindly provide your thoughts on this.

Hi Liz, Thanks! At this point, I am not very sure if the question said
“after” or “before” but my first instinct was false. So the question might have said
“before” in that case.

I finally wrote Not Given because the collection time is definitely not given
anywhere in the passage whether it takes place before 7 AM or after it. 🙁

The information stated that you would miss the collection if you put

Reply

Kshitij says

Yes, 7 AM “onwards”, but there is no time limit – till when?. Can a

resident who keeps his bin out at 8:30 AM or 5 PM have a chance at garbage
collection? What do you think?

Reply

Liz says
September 21, 2017 at 3:43 pm

This not about time limits. It is about collection being after 7am. If
the collection started at 6.30am, the instructions would say put your bins out
before 6am.

9/26/2019 IELTS Reading True False Not Given: Essential Tips
In the last part of the reading test, i had a True/False/Not Given questions.
The doubt that i have is with the term family, does it mean parents or a married couple.
I don’t exactly remember the passage, but the question was Harris’s parents have taken
care of orphaned cubs.
And in the passage, they mentioned: The Harris’s family have taken care of orphaned
cubs in the past, but i don’t know it that meant that his parents did it or that him and his
wife have done it before.
Could you pleasde clarify it? Thank you very much and have a great day.

Liz says

The word “family” means one or two parents with one or more children. I
would need to see the full reading passage to be able to offer you more information
regarding your specific concern. If Harris was a child, then his family means himself
and his parents. If he is married with children, then it might mean himself, his wife and
his children. It really depends on the context and the passage.

False means the statement is wrong. The passage shows that NOT ALL
people aged 55 years old are entitled to 3 weeks notice. The people who are entitled to
3 weeks notice are those that are 55 AND have worked for 2 years straight. This means
the statement is incorrect – it is wrong – it is FALSE. Don’t try to match words – look
for meaning.

Passage:
if your child has to miss school it is vital that you let the school know why, preferably on
the first morning of absence.
Q: If your child is absent from school, you must send a le er to school explain wh.
A: Not Given

Passage:
If you know or think that your child is having difficulties a ending school you should

Q: Staff who think a child is having difficulties at school will contact the parents.
A: Not Given

Question 1. This question states that you must send a le er. The passage
does not give information about how to contact the school. It might be by phone, it
might be by email, it might be by le er – we don’t know because the information is not
given in the passage.
Question 2. This states that staff will contact the parents if they think the child has
problems. The passage does say what will happen if a child has problems. The passage
only mentioned what happens if the child has problems a ending school. Problems
a ending school and problems in school are not the same thing at all. Therefore the
information isn’t given in the passage.
From this you can see that question 1 is about knowing technique. But question 2 is
about you understanding the difference in language: problems a ending school and
difficulties at school.

Thanks for your reply Liz. but that’s the only paragraph with that
heading and also relevant to the question. I too had a same doubt when I answered
to that question. I have considered the ‘desert herbs’ as not something could get
locally. I interpreted in that way.
Would be helpful if any image a achment option is available in the comment box, so
that we could be able to snapshot the page (in a book) and upload it for your
reference. A kind suggestion, which could be helpful more effectively in the
forthcoming days to everyone who are in need of your guidance, like me. thank you!

“Local Ingredients” can’t be known as a fact from the paragraph. It’s also
possible it could be imported ingredients. No information given so the answer is Not

There is a book called Grammar for IELTS. However, if you have problems
constructing sentences, you should enrol on an English language course or get an
English language book. IELTS books are basically skills books for the test. Grammar
relates to the English language.

Hello!

You stated in your video that “majority” means that “not all” which made the question
statement False because it says “all”.
However, I am confused at the question 1. on the reading regarding “Origins of Bread”
because the question statement says “all countries” however, in the passage it says “most
widely”. Doesn’t that mean that not all countries consume bread?

Reply

Liz says
March 21, 2017 at 2:45 pm

There is a difference between “all countries eat bread” and “bread is widely
eaten”. One is explaining that all counties eat bread and the other doesn’t say anything
about how many countries eat bread. “widely eaten” does not refer to countries – it just
refers to people.

Hi,

I have a question. Recently, I encountered this question and I was confused about the
answer.

So the information from the passage is: “The foundations for the prize were laid in 1895
when Alfred Nobel wrote his last will, leaving much of his wealth to the establishment of
the Nobel Prize.”

The statement in the question is: “The first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1895.”

As I couldn’t find out any information about this question in the rest of the passage (the
first Nobel Prize), I assumed the answer would be Not Given. However, to my surprise,
the right answer was “False”. I assume it is because something else happened in the same
year (1895), therefore, the information was wrong. I am still confused: Can I understand
in a way that I can’t find any information about when the first Nobel Prize was awarded,
therefore, it is a Not Given information.

I got a 8 in Reading 2 years ago, and I’m retaking IELTS test next week, trying to get a
higher mark. TFNG seems to be the most challenging type of question for me. Looking
forward to your answer! Thank you!

Reply

Liz says
February 10, 2017 at 10:38 am

What further information was given in the rest of the paragraph. Sometimes
the answer is spread in more than one sentence. Can you write down the two sentences
before and the two sentence after? Or let me know if any other dates were given in the
passage at all? Also let me know which books it came from.

Reply

Catherine Pham says

February 12, 2017 at 9:09 am

Hi, there wasn’t any other information that was related to this. This
sentence came from a passage consisting of 2 sentences only and the first one was a
general statement about Nobel Prize. The next paragraph was about his early life.

This passage is named “Alfred Nobel”. It is Passage 1 in Test 5, from a book called
“IELTS Reading Recent Actual Test Volume 2”. You can search for the passage from
the Internet using the keyword “Alfred Nobel IETLS Reading”, I found it online as
well, but couldn’t copy-paste in this site.

Thank you in advance!

Can the answer of the following question be “NOT GIVEN”.

Because the question says “After” while the opposite of it is “Before” but second half does
not mean before it rather means “DURING”.

Passage: By the second half of 17th Century coffee had found its way to Europe.
Question: Coffee arrived in Europe after 17th Century.
I MAY BE WRONG BUT I JUST GUESS IT AFTER WATCHING YOUR VIDEO.
Please guide me.

Reply

Liz says

You are not looking for opposites of single words. You can looking for a
contradictory meaning. The question states that “coffee arrived after the 17th century”.
Always spend time thinking of the meaning in the question, not the meaning in the
passage. The question means that coffee arrived in the 18th century or 19th or after
that. However, the passage shows that coffee arrived in the 17th century. So, the
passage contains information which contradicts the question.

But the thing is in this video, it is easier to say whether the statment is T/F/NG or Y/N/NG
since there’s only one sentence to look for if I want to search for the information.

On the other hand, during the test, there will be passages which are at least over 1.5

Each question is tackled in the same way. You prepare paraphrases and
spend time understanding the questions. Then you use a key word from the question
to locate the information in the passage. Once you have located it, you follow the same
techniques shown in the video to decide your answer.

I’m a li le bit confused to point out whether a statement is false or not given.
For example: If they said “The pig is fat”
And the question is: “The cow is fat”
Then the answer is false or not given?
Could you please expain further the differences between these two types of answer for
me?
Thank you so much!!

in this situaition the answer is NG.

when the question about something and the text about something else the answer is
NG.
for example.
text say that: an accident has 10 died people.
questin say that: an accident has 10 injuried people.

Always take time with the question. If the question is “an accident has injured 10
people” then you need to find that “10 people were not injured” to be false.

Dear liz,

Thanks so much for sharing the amazing video and tips.

Actually, I have got the similar confusion as the case of “NG or No”
In Cambridge ILETS 4 Test4 Reading2 “The Nature and Aims of Archaeology”
Conventional historical sources begin only with the introduction of wri en
records around 3,000 BC in western Asia, and much later in most other parts of
the world. (Page 93 )

Question 19 : The history of Europe has been documented since 3,000BC

(Page94)

The official answer is No. which I assume it should be NG because the passage
does not specify that Europe has Not been documented since 3,000BC. “Most
other parts” may not include Europe.

I really appreciate your help!

Reply

Liz says
May 22, 2016 at 8:32 am

It does specify that. It states that other parts of the world that
don’t include Asia (that means all parts of the world outside Asia = Europe
and all other parts) were much later than 3,000BC. Remember you are not
matching words, you are looking for conflicting, missing or confirming
information.

Hi I have a problem with this passage and its question please help.

Passage: Tortoises therefore represent a double return. In common with all

mammals, reptiles and birds, their remote ancestors were marine fish and before that
various more or less worm-like creatures stretching back, still in the sea, to the
primeval bacteria. Later ancestors lived on land and stayed there for a very large
number of generations. Later ancestors still evolved back into the water and became
sea turtles. And finally they returned yet again to the land as tortoises, some of
which now live in the driest of desserts.

Question : Choose the correct le er A, B, C or D

According to the writer, the most significant thing about tortoises is that
A > they are able to adapt to life in extremely dry environments.
B > their original life form was kind of primeval bacteria
C > they have so much in common with sea turtles.
D > they have made the transition from sea to land more than once.

The answer given is “D” but i feel according to me the answer should be “B”. Please
explain how D is the actual answer.

Reply

Liz says
April 20, 2016 at 10:46 am

The answer can be found in the first sentence which introduces the
main point and the final sentence which concludes it. The first sentence shows the
significant point about tortoises which is the “double return”. This is explained in
the paragraph as the tortoise went from the sea to land, then back to the sea. They
then returned to the land again (to the dessert) in the final sentence. So, the whole
paragraph is highlighting this double return (transition to the land more than
once).

Of course the paragraph does mention that their original life form was a kind of
primeval bacteria, but that is not highlighted as the main point in the paragraph.
It is just an extra fact. So, this question is all about being able to spot the main
point and aim of a paragraph (the most significant thing). I hope that helps.

By the way, where did you get this reading passage from?

allocation could 1000 acres but even then it is possible that the land used is only 400 acres.

Hi, Liz,
Thanks a lot for your wonderful tips for the TFNG questions! Today I’m doing a test and

sometime?

The question is : Chinese farmers realized that price of pesticides became expensive. The
passage is: Those who abandoned ants in favor of chemicals quickly became
disillusioned. As costs soared and pests began to develop resistance to the chemicals,
growers began to revive the old ant patrols. The answer of my book says Not Given,
while I think it is True. Who do you think we are right? Thank you very very much!!

Reply

Liz says

The key is the difference between “Chinese farmers” and “growers”.

Without seeing the other sentences I can’t say. But these two sentences don’t show that
this refers to Chinese farmers which means it would be NG.

Hi Liz,
are the answers here Not Given or false?
the passage is “…producing over 6% of the world’s gross national product… Thus,
tourism has a profound impact both on world economy, and because of the educative
effect of travel and effects on employment, on society itself.”

the questions are: 1. Tourism contributes over 6% of the Australian gross national
product.

2: Tourism has a social impact because it promotes recreation.

This really confuses me. 🙁

Reply

Liz says
September 8, 2015 at 3:22 pm

Sorry, I didn’t manage to get to your question before. Question 1 should be

NG because we are not given information about the gross national product of
Australia. Question 2 should be F because it clearly states that tourism has had a social
impact because of travel and employment which means it can’t be because of
recreation.

Hi Liz,

I have a doubt about my answer in True false, not given section. The given paragraph
says, “Ramped way is made for wheelchairs to reach food bar, which is available at the
entrance located on the side of theatre.”

question was, “wheelchair users can readily reach the food bar.”

I wrote False.
Could you please tell me if i am right.

The answer should be True “Ramped way is made for wheelchairs to reach
food bar” means that access has been made for wheelchairs so they can easily reach the
food bar.

where in fact the “Ramped way” wasn’t given in the question? I thought the correct
for it is NG.

You can not matching words. You are matching meaning. If someone
puts “ramped ways” into a place, it is to make access easier. The meaning is the

ramped ways, wheelchairs can’t have access – the meaning is very clear.

Hi,
I have a question about the homework of T-F-NG:
I did not think that the word “after” in the Question part means opposite to the phrase ”
the second half of the 17 h century”. I thought the answer was NG. Can you explain
more about this situation! Thank you!

Liz says

Don’t try to matching individual words, you need to match meaning. “after
the 17th century” means in the 18th century (now you can understand the answer).
Spend time thinking of the meaning before you try to match the answers.

You must first understand the meaning of “after the 17th century”. It
means in the 18th century or after. Now you can find the opposite.
Most students fail with these questions because they don’t spend enough time
considering the information in the question.

I can only suggest that you pay closer a ention to 1) paraphrases – not all
synonyms have the exact same meaning 2) the subject of the sentence – if it alters, it
might affect the answer 3) check for changes in grammar tense. You need to make
detailed notes of examples of answer you get wrong so you can learn from them. By
studying hard and making notes, you should realistically have more tips than I do.

Spend more time analysing the question before you look for the
answer. Don’t read it and then look for the information. Think about the question,
translate the words, think of paraphrases – thinking more deeply. After you have
done that, locate the information.

Hi teacher Liz, Good day.

I would like to ask some help from my mistakes in my practice T F NG questions.

Without these mistakes, I am able to get my target score band 7. I practiced today a 40
item test two times, both test I got 6.5 only. The result is very frustrating and
discouraging for me. I hope you can help me out if you’re free. ^__^

Passage: The glow-worm belongs to a family of beetles known as the Lampyridae or

fireflies. The fireflies are a huge group containing over 2000 species, with new ones
being discovered all the time.

Question: Scientists have only recently been able to list the exact number of glow-
worms species. NOT GIVEN (my answer is false) I think over 2000 species here means
it is not exact, but the phrase new ones being discovered all the time does it mean new
species that come one by one they will have the exact count? ^__^?

https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-true-false-not-given-essential-tips/ 77/87
9/26/2019 IELTS Reading True False Not Given: Essential Tips
Passage: In some countries the numbers of glow-worms have been falling. Evidence
suggest that there has been a steady decrease in the British glow-worm population
since the 1950s and possibly before that.

Question: Glow-worms populations are decreasing faster in some countries than in

others. NOT GIVEN (my answers is true) I think I got trapped here in the comparison
statement 🙁

Passage: A lot more research will be needed, however, before the causes of the glow-
worm’s gradual decline “are clear”.

Question: The exact reason why glow-worm numbers are decreasing is unknown.
TRUE (my answer is false) Because the passage said it is clear, now I am wondering
because I think the opposite of unknown is clear but I don’t know why it’s not correct.
🙁

Reply

Liz says
August 10, 2015 at 1:57 pm

In your first example “The fireflies are a huge group containing over 2000
species, with new ones being discovered all the time.” the information you refer to is
for fireflies not glow-worms. Although glow-worms are part of the firefly species, it
gives no information about listing or discovering the number of glow-worms, it only
mentions fireflies.

In your second example, you have been trapped by the comparison trick – well
spo ed! It mentions the fall in numbers in some countries and the decline in
numbers in Britain, but not which is faster (no comparison).

In the third example, if it says that more research is needed before the cause is
known, it actually means that the cause is not presently known but with more
research it might be. So, the answer is true – the reason is unknown (present). Spend
time paraphrasing which doesn’t just mean thinking of synonyms but writing the
sentence again in a completely different way – rephrase it. Then you will get to the
real meaning.

Anyway, I would like to say well done!! You are obviously working really hard and
you are becoming aware of the usual traps used by IELTS and the importance of
rephrasing the question. Keep going – you’ll be fine 🙂
All the best
Liz

For the academic test, the passages are the same difficulty. It is only the GT
reading test in which passage 3 is more difficult. So, if you are doing the Academic test,
just start with passage 1 but make sure you never spend more than 20 mins on each
passage. Take control of your time.

Hi, ma’am I really have difficulty answering true, false, not given
questions. Perhaps, here are some questions I had made a common mistake because
of the phrase “may be”, I hope you could help me clear this thought.

passage says: Sick days may not be used as extra vacation days.

question: employees may use some of their sick days in order to take a longer
vacation.

I answered “not given” but the correct answer is stated “false”.

Here is one more.

passage says: Sick days are to be used in the case of illness or for doctor’s
appointments only. They may not be used as extra vacation days. Permission is not
required to use these days, but department heads should be notified as soon as
possible about unexpected absences due to illness. Supervisors should also be
informed in a timely manner when employees need to be absent to a end doctor’s
appointments. Supervisors may request wri en confirmation of appointments from
the doctor’s office if they desire.

question: employees must have confirmation from a doctor in order to use a sick
day.

I answered “not given” but the stated answer is “false”. The word “may” in the
passage really confuses me.

One more thing ma’am, do you have any links where I can practice more reading
passages about completing the labels of a diagram? Because it is also confusing for

https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-true-false-not-given-essential-tips/ 79/87
9/26/2019 IELTS Reading True False Not Given: Essential Tips
me especially when the point where the questions are misinterpreted by my
visualization.

Hoping for your propensity to aid my concerns.

Sincerely and respectfully yours,

You need to look at meaning, not just at one word. In the first example,
“sick days may not be …”. the actual meaning is “sick days can’t be used …”. The
verb “may” has different meanings depending on the context and this question is
checking if you know that. So, the answer is false. The second example is the
same. The problem is that you are not aware of the meanings of the verb “may”. It
has two clear meanings 1) to express possibility (this is the meaning you
understand) 2) to give permission (this is the meaning you are missing). Take time
to learn more about English vocabulary.

Ma’am I would also like to ask one more question if it is allowed to write in all
CAPS in the whole general training IELTS exam even when it comes to the
writing test? Because I’ve seen in some of your videos that all CAPS is allowed
in the reading and listening exam as long as it is consistent. But in the writing
exam, I’m afraid it is not allowed. I asked the British council KSA in their
facebook page for more clarification and they answered all CAPS is still
allowed in the writing test as long as it is still consistent. I just want to make
sure ma’am for the answers I am about to write in the exam. Because this exam
is very important to me at this moment. It is to decide for my future and for the
future of my family who is far away from me right now. I hope you could
understand even though I am taking too much of your time. I know you are a
very busy person and a lot of students counting on you for your generous
support and effort. But I hope you also know how much thankful we are, in
behalf of all the students listening to you all across the globe. For you being a
part of our struggle in this examination, is such kindness not all teachers can
give. Because I know most of the people taking this exam, is that their career is

As I mentioned to you earlier, your level of English is around band

score 5. That means you will get possibly under 5 ( which means 4.5) or just over 5
(which means 5.5) but to get band 6 or more, you must have a higher level of
English. It takes time to do that and a lot of concentrated grammar study.
