MKII SFX MELLOTRON®
When the first MKI Mellotrons arrived late in 1963 they
were revolutionary, expensive and British… but more to
the point, astounding. The Mellotron and its ingenious
keyboard mechanism allowed the player to articulate
tape recordings of real musical instruments into fresh
compositions. No oscillators were involved, nor anything
plucked or hammered, instead magnetised oxide over
playback heads was the order of the day.
Lateral thinking and a light bulb moment came about in
1965. Instead of musical notes, why not record sound
effects that could be immediately retrieved using exactly
the same principle? This would allow live dubbing of birds
tweeting and car doors slamming straight from tape via
the mellotron keyboard. And so the first SFX Mellotron
was created, born out of a converted MKII containing
1260 individual recordings that covered the most popular
spectrum of essential sounds for TV and film.
Through clever grouping of the these recordings, you
could go from key to key and generate a whole sequence.
For instance, footsteps approaching, a car door opening,
the engine starting and then driving off. Of course chaos
was the other possibility with a pony and trap being driven
by a herd of geese while tiger moths circled overhead.
The MKII SFX was also a milestone as it used transistor
amplification for a much quieter audio path. The speed
control system was improved to utilise a DC motor
control which also reduced hum. Despite all these sonic
improvements, the source recordings largely came from
scratchy shellac discs with all the imperfections now clearly
reproduced by the improved technology! Nevertheless,
these ancient SFX are an important time-capsule and
certain recordings are guaranteed to strangely familiar.
Particularly to UK males of a certain age who grew up on
a diet of Gerry Anderson
GForce Software, in collaboration with Streetly
Electronics, are happy to bring you the original MKII SFX
Mellotron library in all it’s glory. Hang on, is that an owl I
hear hooting being attacked by a Thames’ barge during a
game of cricket?
