Gulisi's Family p. 5
Introduction

It has been almost 10 years since Dr. Palacio's paper introduced the world to Gulisi. Since my
family had been mentioned and considering my interest in oral history, I was more than happy to
embark on Gulisi journey in 2001. I interviewed Dr. Palacio's sources in an attempt to map my
connection to the matriarch. However, after countless attempts failed to place Ramon Hernandez
(my ancestor who had been mentioned in the paper), I abandoned the research.

18
In 2003 I started digitizing and transcribing the baptismal registers of Sacred Heart Parish in
Dangriga and "Gulisi" names that had been mentioned by my sources started to appear within
family clusters. By relating oral history with archival records, I was able to discard the assumption
that my connection to Gulisi had been through a male and focus instead on the data which revealed
that the connection is through a female, Justaguia Vicente, wife of the Ramon Hernandez mentioned
in Dr. Palacio's paper.

20
I returned to Dr. Palacio's source, Felicita Bernardez better known as "Baby Amahuni" to her
parent's generation, "Baby" to her generation and "Granny Baby" to my generation. By Granny
Baby's own admission, she was not the primary oral historian of the family; it had been her sister,
who had learnt the family history. For this reason, Granny Baby was not clear about the specifics of
the relationships. Attempting a different approach, I asked her to confirm the names of persons
who were a part of Gulisi's family. I then used archival sources to "find" and place these persons on
the list and any other persons appearing as godparents and witnesses to the ones already confirmed
FT
by Granny Baby.

However, even that proved to be a challenge. There seems to be a tendency to "masculinize"

relationships. Perhaps because women lose their maiden names with marriage, it is often assumed
that relationships are through males. Secondly, Gulisi's descendants intermarried with second and
third cousins, leading to confusion in determining who was related. Lastly, the first generations of
Gulisi's children used several aliases. While it is often assumed that name changes were adopted
A

from godparents, I have found no such evidence. Instead name changes seemed to have been a
deliberate attempt to hide and protect identity.

Despite these challenges, this compilation represents the most recent understanding I have acquired
R

of Gulisi and her descendents. Please note that as more research becomes available, the document
will be updated. However, as this is a project I conduct in my spare time and with my own financial
resources, I cannot guarantee when it will next be revised.

Gulisi's Family p. 7
Gulisi's Family
Oral history relates the story of Gulisi, daughter of Garifuna chief, Joseph Chatoyer, who arrived in
Honduras at the age of 13 after being forcefully removed along with 2,200 other Garifuna survivors
of attempted suicide in Yurumein, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.1 It is said that she was fiercely
independent so much so that she left the father of her children in Honduras and came by dory to
Belize bringing with her 13 children, 12 boys and 1 girl. One boy was killed in Puerto Cortez; the
others landed in Dangriga from where she, her 12 children, and grandchildren established such
settlements as Commerce Bight, Punta Negra, Punta Icacos, New Town, Babylandia and Jonathan
Point.

18
I first "met" Gulisi through an article written by Dr. Joseph Palacio circa 1997. I later interviewed
his source, Mrs. Felicita Francisco better known as "Granny Baby". At the time I was trying to
establish my own connection to Gulisi but because I didn't recognize the names Mrs. Francisco
remembered, I found it difficult to weave her story into mine. Some of the concerns are common in
oral history interviews in that there are limited references to dates. I found that Granny Baby had

20
several lapses in time and space and couldn't explain how Gulisi tied in to my family so I abandoned
that angle for a while.

Then an interview with Mrs. Martin (first name unknown) better known as "Graany" (now
deceased) lead me to the name "Possum". Mrs. Martin isn's a Gulisi descendants but her daughters
married into the family. Also Graany was an excellent source of social history so she recalled with
great detail any significant event since her arrival in Belize from Honduras in the 1920s. And lastly,
at the time of our interview, she was 97 years old with an intact memory. One of her most
FT
incredible memories that became a clue was a dream in which one of Gulisi's descendants revealed
her name. One drawback was that "Graany" almost always gave nicknames and she warned:

"It will be difficult to figure out that 'raza'. Those people were always together. They raised each
other's children so many people couldn't tell if a woman was raising her children or her nieces. And
they all lived together in Babylandia".
A

I turned my attention to Possom. Remarkably, many didn't know who she was or what her real
name may have been BUT many knew that they had come from her. "Possum" was so named
because she had many children – some claim as many as 18; others claim 12. Even though some of
R

her children and grandchildren had been identified, the question remained: Who was Possum?
What was her real name?

That answer came from Mamma (Ageda Serano m. Amaya). Mamma was the family historian. In
D

2004, Mamma plotted a generational line from my family to Gulisi by way of Possum. After that
interview, I spent time researching chuch and government records. The plan had been to go back to
Mamma for clarifications. However, I couldn't. The day she told me about Possum was the last
conversation we had about the family tree. Soon after she was silenced by a stroke.

1 Dr. Palacio's main source, Felicita Bernardez, related that Gulisi arrived in Honduras when she was 24 years old.
However, Emelia Cayetano, older sister to Felicita Bernardez and the family historian, related that Gulisi had been 13 yrs
old when she arrived. This was corroborated by Roy Cayetano to whom Emelia Cayetano had related the story of
Gulisi.

Gulisi's Family p. 8
Trying to Piece Gulisi Together
At different times, I have attempted to stitch the Gulisi story together. However, by the time I had
some archival data, I no longer had many of my elders to help tie the pieces together. Today I rely
on recordings and interview notes to try to figure out the hundreds of clues in records. One of the
biggest challenges, however, is the scarcity of older records.

Because of floods and fires, many of Belize's early records have been destroyed: I have found no

18
records for Garifuna communities between 1830 and 1885 in the Stann Creek District, save for 10
marriage records (1839-1843) and 72 baptismal records (1855-1881) from the Methodist Church.
This scarcity of records leaves a 50 year gap during and after which it is difficult to connect families.
For this reason, I am limited in making conclusive observations. Instead, I formulate hypotheses
and allow the research data to suggest connections.

20
For example, these fraternal twins come from a family that clusters around Gulisi descendants. The
Ciegos are referenced in areas of New Town and Dangriga known to be inhabited by Gulisi's
descendants. And several twins are reported on the Josa Martina "Karuba" Vicente's line as well as
along the Sabina Lambey-Martinez line and the Petrona Lambey-Higinio lineage. For those reasons,
I suspect that these twins, Andres and Apostol (also known as Justiniano) Ciego may descend from
Gulisi but I lack the evidence to show how:

As another example, Estanislado Lambey, who had children in and around Honduras, is recognized
in Livingston as a relative of one Santiago Lambey from whom one of my sources descends. I
strongly suspect him to be of Gulisi because of his family line in Dangriga; however, I have so far
been unable to connect Estanislado or Santiago to Gulisi.

descend from Gulisi. The evidence is leaning towards his wife but the relationship is still unclear.

except for his surname, Lambert or Lambey or Lambé. What type of person would Gulisi have
married?

FROM 1821 Census in Trujillo, Honduras:

Francisco Lamber, 52 year old Carib catholic second lieutenant, is head of a household that consists

18
of Maria Antonia, female, 22 yrs, his woman and Concepcion, 3 yrs, daughter.

Francisco Lamber stands out for a number of reasons: he is Yurumeina, would have been born circa
1769 which meant that he would have been in his prime when the war started in 1795. He was
probably highly skilled in military techniques because he occupied the highest post held by a
Garifuna in the Honduran army in 1821. His wife was fairly young and judging from the age of the

20
daughter, so was their relationship. However, at 52 years, Francisco Lamber would have been
expected to have adult children and an older wife. Could that wife have been Gulisi who we assume
to have been born around 1784 in Yurumein?

The only other contenders in the 1821 census who identified as Lamber are
• Jose Agustin Lamber, 16 year old son of Jose Luis Cocoi, and
FT
• Esteban Lambi, 15 year old son of Francisco Lamber and Maria Juana Josefa

Given their proximity in age and social status, she being the daughter of Paramount Chief Joseph
Chatoyer and he having attained the highest rank in a relatively short period in the Honduran army,
Francisco Lamber could have been husband to Gulisi. Furthermore, Francisco Lambey is a name
that recurs several times, over several generations in Gulisi's line both in Belize and in Livingston.

Second Generation
I believe Gulisi was trying to protect her sons. She had lost her father and many other
relatives during the war in St. Vincent (1795-1799). Between 1813 and 1821 Honduras
was constantly engaged in military action as part of the fight for independence. Gulisi's
husband held a higher rank in the Honduran army than most, if not all, Garinagu. Had
she remained in Honduras, the fate of her sons would have been sealed so she brought
them to Belize in search of a peaceful existence.

As a protective measure they did not remain in the same location, in a single homestead as

18
would be expected of a family. Instead they spread out into communities. It was a strategy
meant to protect them in the event of war. One descendant remembers being told that
women from one family were expected to remain near their original home. Even after they
found partners, the husbands were integrated into the family.

Gulisi's sons also seemed to have adopted different surnames:

20
• Francisco who may have originally been named in his father's honor used Avila.
• Marugufino used both Ramirez and Lambey.
• Miluni, whose other name has been lost, gave birth to a child whose last name was
Flores.
• Meriwa used Moroy
• Emmanuel ans Salomé used both Baltazar and Lambey
• Gregorio used Vanega
This name changing was --more than likely --another protective strategy aimed at hiding
FT
their true identities. Year later, when it became safe, the connection with the original
Lambey name was re-establised as can be seen by grandchildren who reverted to the
Lambey surname. For example, Sabina Lambey also used Sabina Casimiro and Petrona
Lambey also used Petrona Vanega. John Baltazar, who was so listed on his marriage
certificate, became John Lambey. And even today, Gulisi's Labuga descendants can't
explain the Baltazar surname because they know they are Lambeys.

Another protective strategy was to marry within the family. Partnerships and marriages
between second degree relatives were acceptable. One nonagenerian described it by
saying "your cousin will not harm you". This underlying fear of being harmed, of fighting
wars and of having one's identity revealed may have been Gulisi's response to the trauma
R

of losing her family and home. Perhaps for that reason, she would wake her
grandchildren from sleep in the middle of the night and relate to them the story she hoped
they would never forget.

Possum is the mother of all these children. Pascuala. I was told that she had so many
children with this man, Side In -- 18, I think; it is so they called her “Possum”. You know a
possum from time to time keeps her pouch full of babies. That is the story that was told to
me. I don't know if it's factual or legend; but this is what was told to me.
