C) 3:22 LISTEN TO DEFINE TERMS Listen to Part 1 of the lecture to answer this
question: What is the difference between an animal that is a predator and one
that is prey?

When we talk about prey and predators, we are referring to one of the most common
relationships between animals: predation. It is a type of biological interaction in which
one animal hunts and feeds on another to survive.
A predator may also be prey to another greater than itself, feeding on some species of
others in what is known as the food chain or food chain, whose balance keeps
organisms in a given ecosystem in balance.

D 3:23 LISTEN FOR EXAMPLES Listen to Part 1 of the lecture again. With a
partner, find an example from the listening to explain each of the following:

1 a benefit of a social group for animals of prey

One of the advantages that birds of prey take advantage of when flying in a group is
energy savings during their movements. For example, birds that move in a V-shape
during migrations do so more efficiently

2 a benefit of a social group for predators

When hunting, predators form a polygon around the prey. Once cornered, it has little
chance of escape, as predators are generally extremely fast and agile.

3 the role of a dominant animal in a social group

a behavior related and linked to behaviors such as competition, struggle, confrontation
or opposition, which occur between one or several dominant and authoritarian
individuals and other individuals who are considered subordinate.

4 the meaning of “fight or flight

The fight or flight reaction is a physiological response to the perception of damage,
attack or threat to survival.
