Challenges in Road Safety
The main challenge in road safety is lack of enforcement & lack of awareness among users which results in
following;
 High speed travel
 Contra flow of traffic
 Drunk & drive
 Pedestrian crossing at unauthorized location
 Encroachments
Instead of above our highways being semi access control which is adding the risk involved

Tools to reduce road accidents

Most common tools/techniques being adopted in India to reduce road accidents are as follows;

 Traffic calming measures at junctions

 Providing incident management vehicles
 Innovative Maintenance
 i-RAP
 Conducting eye camps
 Creating awareness
Tools to reduce road accidents – Traffic calming measures at junctions

Junctions on National Highways, itself

are designed to warn road users much
in advance against the approaching
hazard through series of sign boards,
Solar blinkers, rumble strips, storage
lane to provide an additional room for
the vehicles taking U-turn,
acceleration-deceleration lanes &
Lighting.
Tools to reduce road accidents – Incident Management vehicles

Most of the crashes on Highways are due

to collision with break down vehicles on
roads and vehicles parked at
unauthorized locations which is being
averted by deploying 24X7 route
patrolling vehicle. How ever tow away
crane & ambulance will be alerted as &
when required

Results:
JEPL NH44 Thondapalli to Jadcherla Star Ratings (116.8km) TTPL NH45 Ulundurpet to Padalur Star Ratings (191.8km)

Comments: The assessment for JEPL found that, 66% of the 116.8Km surveyed is rated 3 star or better for
vehicle occupants; just 1% is rated 3 star or better for motorcyclists; and none is rated 3 star or better for
pedestrians and bicyclists
TTPL has much less road length rated 3 star or better for vehicle occupants compared with JEPL despite
similar road infrastructure including number of lanes, road side hazards, curvature, delineation, and
intersection. The reason behind poor star ratings is higher operating speed.

Tools to reduce road accidents – Eye camps

Road ministry in India had taken an

initiative of conducting free eye
camps for truckers at all toll plazas
across pan India and distributed
lenses to drivers whose eye sight is
above normal. Later to this survey it
is revealed that 40% of those behind
wheels are suffering from eyesight
and being continued without any
treatment

Recently one of our project JEPL, AP-03 package on NH-44

was selected by NHAI as a venue to conduct its 3rd series of
Road Safety training.
The program was hosted by Road Safety Experts Shri. Dr.
Jacob George and Shri. Dr. Subhamay Gangopadhyay from
MoRTH, Shri. Krishna Prasad, RO, NHAI along with his team,
Shri. K Prasad, ACP, Traffic and participants from entire RO
