PEARLS OF WISDOM, 2011

The Annual alumni conclave of the PGDM-Executive batch was marked by a discussion on a very
relevant topic of today’s business scenario which is “Triple bottom line (People, Planet, Profit): The
strategy in the new era.”

Our esteemed alumni members who participated as panelists are namely: Mr. Rajesh Sehgal, COO
Caretel Infotech of the very first batch of PGDM(E), Mr. Anurag Sharma, President, Leading Edge
Resources of 2001-02 batch, Mr. Pronoy Dutt, Lead Resource- People & Organization Development at
Costa Coffee (India) of the 2004-05 batch and Mr. Ashish Gupta, General Manager at VSK Associates of
2008-09 batch.

The programme was inaugurated by our Director Dr.

Bibek Banerjee and Dean (Academics) Dr. R.K.
Chakraborty. The Exec-ALCOM Chairperson Dr. Susmi
Routray welcomed the guests and students which
was followed by the opening address by the director
and dean, which set a direction to the beginning of
the discussion. The discussion was moderated by Dr.
Omkumar Krishnan, Assoc. Professor of Marketing
Management at IMT, Ghaziabad and Mr. Sunil
Prabhu of current batch 2010-11, represented
student participation in the panel.

Triple bottom line, is a term widely in used in industrial arena today. It captures an expanded spectrum
of values and criteria for measuring organizational (and societal) success: economic, ecological and
social. The esteemed panelists came up with varying school of thoughts on this theme. Mr. Rajesh
Sehgal quoted a number of interesting examples whereby a balance has been successfully achieved
through public private partnership like the conversion to CNG autos across Delhi NCR. The adoption of
business strategies with a long run view is the need of the hour instead of a short-sighted profit driven
approach. At this juncture, Mr. Ashish Gupta stressed on the fact that any business is ultimately run for
profits, so the need of the hour is to innovate in order to connect the disconnected link between people
and planet in order to run sustainable profit generating businesses.

Mr. Anurag Sharma came up with an interesting approach that businesses should concentrate on what
they do best i.e. their core competencies. So there lies the opportunity for upcoming entrepreneurs to
enter into the recycling business of industrial waste generated by the various industries like textiles,
heavy metals etc. The planet aspect of the Triple bottom line can be handled in a profitable manner
through such endeavors. Mr. Pronoy Dutt on the other hand focused on the people aspect and talked
about the need for employee engagement to ensure sustainable business development. The importance
of building and maintaining relationship with both the internal as well as external customers is a very
important facet that cannot be ignored at any cost. Sunil at this note quoted a number of examples of
practices adopted by his past employer and how it created an impact on his mind as an employee,
consumer and common man. Dr. Om kumar Krishnan beautifully moderated the event and ensured that
all the points of discussion and questions raised by the panel and audience was adequately addressed.
The discussion was followed by an open interactive session with the batch wherein the panelists shared
their experiences of college as well as corporate life with the batch.

Overall the event was a great success and hugely appreciated by one and all. The batch is enlightened
and enthused by the Pearls of Wisdom shared by the eminent panelists. Team ALCOM is extremely
thankful to our alumni who took out time from their busy schedules to spend half a day with us.
