PHILIPPINE THEATER

Students must be able to:


 Identify the musical characteristics of Philippines theater through video or live performance
 explain how a specific idea or story is communicated through music in a particular Philippine
Musical theater
 Appreciate the culture and way of entertainment of the Filipino before
 Sing and perform a selection/s from chosen Philippine Musical Theater

II. Subject Matter


Philippine theater (komedya, Sarsuela and Bodabil)
Materials: Pictures, chalk and board, laptop, speaker Power point presentation

B. Motivation

Who among you played charade before? Before we start in our discussion, we’re going to play
charade. I will divide you into 5 groups. Choose a leader to start the game. Each group will be given 90
seconds to act the answer. The player going to pick a title of movies or teleserye that written into a
paper. Players from each team take turns pantomiming for their teammates. The first team to guess
the word or phrase will get the point. Keep track of the points earned by each team. The one with the
most points at the end of the game wins.

C. Lesson proper

Did everyone play in theater? In your community or School program? Can you give me an example what
the theater looks like? What are the elements in the theater? what are the difference between theater
and movie? What kind of music they use in their performance? What is the importance of Philippine
musical theater in the life of Filipino before? Let’s find out what are the different Philippine musical
theater of the past.

First the Komedya. Descended from 16th century Spanish comedia (play). One of the colorful theatrical
traditions in the Philippines used by the Spanish as a method to spread Christianity. This theatrical form
describes the conflict of Christians and Muslims.
The two types of Komedya are:

1. Secular Komedya = Performed at localfiesta.


2. Religious Komedya = Usually seen during church celebrations and it focuses on the life of Christ
or any Saint. Can you give an example of Komedya that played in your school or community?
Yes Senakulo is a kind of komedya that perform every Lenten season.

Sarsuela

An art form of lyric theater drama, comical in nature and it is incorporated with singing, dancing
and dialogue.

Originated from Spain and was made popular in the Philippines in the 1800’s.

It portrays the typical Filipino realities and stories in a particular country and social relations which
viewers can relate in their lives such as elections and feasts, marriage and family, vices and
values.

Bodabil

Stage show that became popular during the Japanese period based on the French vaudeville.
Bodabil was developed because city growers wanted to uplift their emotional stability from the
usual stage acts to a stage presentation featuring comedy, musical, monologue, skits,
impersonators, acrobats and even magical acts. The entertainers helped to make jazz and blues
popular and admired in our country.

Did you know that dolpy played in Bodabil? Can you give some artist play in Bodabil or theater?

Lets now watch video and answer the following questions in their learner’s module. Learner’s should
use their activity notebook for the answer. 2 pts each

1.Watch the moro moro komedya. “Kababayan LA” (Downloaded video) based on the video clip Moro-
Moro Kababayan LA? What is Moro moro?

2. Watch the video of “SDA Modern San Dionisio Komedya/Moro moro. Based on the video how the
komedya deliver their lines?

3. what is the role of the music in the Komedya Moro-Moro performance?

4. Watch the Video of “ Walang Sugat by “Tanghalang Ateneo. Describe the musical elements and
singing style used in the video walang sugat.

5. Can you see yourself performing in a Komedya? Give at least two reasons?
IV. Evaluation

Formative Assessment

Moro moro is a type of Komedya portraying the conflict between Christians and Filipino Muslims

At present, we hear stories about the conflicts between Christians and Muslims. Is it possible to promote
peace and stop the conflicts through a Komedya? Explain. (10 pts)
