Civil Services exam is conducted once in a year. The exam is divided into 3 sections.

1. Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) – formerly Prelimins.

2. Civil MAINS.

3. Interview.

The CSAT is a test for 1 day. It has negative marking. The questions will be of multiple choices,
objective type. The Preliminary Examination shall now comprise of two compulsory Papers of
200 marks each and of two hours duration each.
The notification for the year 2011 will be given on 19/02/2011, and the last date to apply
is on 21/03/2011, and probably the exam will be conducted on 12/06/2011.
The syllabus of CSAT:
Detailed below is the new syllabus and pattern of the Preliminary Examination, which is brought
to the notice of the prospective candidates intending to appear at the Civil Services Examination
(CSE) in 2011 onwards:

1. Paper I - (200 marks) Duration: Two hours


• Current events of national and international importance
• History of India and Indian National Movement
• Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
• Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy,
Rights Issues, etc.
• Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion,
Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
• General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not
require subject specialization
• General Science.

2. Paper II- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours


• Comprehension
• Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
• Logical reasoning and analytical ability
• Decision making and problem solving
• General mental ability
• Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc.) (Class X level), Data
interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)
• English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).
• Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level.
The prospective candidates are advised to note that no changes are being introduced at this
stage in the Civil Services (Main) Examination and Personality Test in the scheme of Civil
Services Examination (CSE).

THE CIVILS MAINS is conducted for those who clear the CSAT.
There are 21 optional subjects, out of which we have to select 2 subjects.
Each paper has 2 parts, and the exam is in descriptive form. So choose the optional papers
wisely. The time table for 2010 is also shown in the next page.
So in the MAINS we have the following papers as a whole.

1. General Studies Paper I & II


2. Essay (Paper I) & English (Paper II)
3. Optional 1 Paper I & II
4. Optional 2 Paper I & II
5. Indian Language

And the interview will be conducted in the month of Feb/Mar.
