Assignment Brief and Guidance

*Please note that assignment guidance is for reference only and should be more specific in detail to meet customised
needs.

Scenario:
You work as a system design engineer for a small manufacturing company and have been asked to
work in a new project designing of an “electronically controlled chicken egg incubation machine”.
Your position in the team is electronic circuit design and you have to:
- Investigate the systems requirements and propose some electronic, and mechanical
approaches to control the system.
- Select input and output devices, sensors and transducers that meet the customer
requirements.
- Design and implement prototype circuit that interface between selected electrical, electronic
and mechanical transducers.
- Make measurements and evaluation the performace of the circuit before come to next mass
production stage of the project.
The mechanical setup of the system have been done as in the figure 1. It’s a closed box that contain
chicken eggs, DC swing motor, AC fan, control panel, heater, temperature and humidity sensor.

Figure 1: Mechanical setup of chicken egg incubation machine

The requirements for chicken eggs incubation as follow:
- Chicken eggs should be incubated at a temperature between 99 and 102 degrees Fahrenheit
(99.5 is often considered to be ideal) and 50 to 65 percent relative humidity (60 percent is often
considered the ideal)
- Chicken eggs typically hatch after 21 days of incubation. During the final three days of incubation,
the eggs should ideally be located in a slightly cooler (98.5 degrees) and more humid (65 percent
relative humidity or greater) environment to facilitate successful hatching
- In general, eggs should be incubated with their pointed ends down (air cell up) – but it is also
important to turn or tip the eggs back and forth at least twice a day – the more often they are
turned, the better.
The mechanical system already designed to meet the incubation requirements as follow:
- Heater to make the temperature raise
- AC fan to make the heater cool down and supply humidity.
- DC swing (with the proper mechanism) make the eggs turn back and forth by its rotation
directions.
- Temperature and humidity sensor
- And a control panel with display and buttons as needed.
Task:
Part 1: Select and describe the main elements of an electronically controlled system
- With reference to the customer brief requirements above you should make a literature
review on similar systems (P2) and propose some controlled techniques with detail
ananlysing pros and cons of every proposed technique. (M1)
- Propose and describe the main elements of an electronically controlled system, which meets
all the customer requirements. (P1)
Part 2: Design temperature controlled system using closed loop control technique
- Investigate on some sensors and controller units that can meet all the requirements for the
incubation machine. (P3) And make comparison on those devices (P4)
- Refine one “best” solution base on the behaviour of the heating box and required
temperature accuracy. In addition, you should include the specifications form the
manufacture datasheet. (M2)
- With your selected one, design and implement a circuit that can interface all input sensors
and output heater, AC fan to control the temperature of the incubation box within the
required range:
+ Use your prototype circuit to make some measurements for examining the performance of
the sensors, output AC fan, heater. (D1)
+ Critically investigate the behaviour of the systems by measurement its response
parameters based on several controlled methods and make recommendations for usage or
improvement of the proper system control technique. (D2)
Part 3: Design and implement a computer-based measurement system to calibrate a
temperature controlled system
- Apply practical and computer-based methods to design and test a measurement system. (P5)
- Describe and explain system’s accuracy, resolution, tolerances, repeatability and stability,
sensitivity and response time based on the measurement results. (P6)
- Apply transfer functions for interpret the characteristics and behaviour of the temperature
controlled system. In addition, using measurement results to interpolate the system transfer
functions parameters. (M3)
- Use computer-based control with the proposed control parameters to make measurement of
the real temperature controlled system and evaluate the performance of the new system
compared to previous designed system. (D3)
Part 4: Propose an Internet of Things application to current temperature controlled system.
- Consider current trends in technology, including the increase of wireless and Internet of
Things (IoTs) technology, benchmarking current temperature controlled system performance
with new IoTs system (P7)
- Propose an upgraded model for current system with some new applicable IoTs features. In
addition, give an evaluation on the characteristics of the new IoTs system. (M4)
- Analyse new proposed system performance using appropriate analytical techniques. Then
write recommendation sheet to the customer with detail price, performance, pros and cons
of the new system in comparison with the old one. (D4)
