BYU-I LEARNING MODEL

BYU-I is committed to learning by study and also by faith. Passive learning is ineffective. From both a
spiritual and scientific perspective, effective learning requires that we are actively in engaged in pre-
class preparation, in-class discussions, and post-class reflection. Acting in faith (hard and prayerful work)
invites the Holy Ghost and opens the door to true learning. For more information about the BYU-I
Learning Model see:
Learning Model (Links to an external site.)

REQUIREMENTS

1. Attendance is critical because of what you can gain from the classroom experience and what
you can contribute. If you are late arriving to class, you have probably already been marked
absent for the day. You are responsible to tell me before you leave the classroom that you
were tardy that day so you can receive attendance credit.  No attendance credit will be given
after I’ve left the classroom. Absent students will receive no attendance credit unless they have
an official university excused absence.  Attendance will be taken daily. You will receive five
points every day you attend the full ninety minutes of class.

2. Participate appropriately in group activities, class lectures, panel discussions, and other
instructional experiences. Participate fully, but do not dominate the class discussion. A few
students should not carry all the discussions.  Some students are quicker to respond than others
so please be patient during periods of silence. If you have already participated in a particular
discussion, please give others a chance to gather their thoughts and participate (D&C 88:122).

3. Complete four exams. Each exam is worth 100 points. Late takes without prior approval will
be decremented by 25%. You are responsible to arrange a late take time with the instructor
within one week of the exam closing.  The exams are NOT comprehensive. They are remote and
online. You may take each unit exam twice; the computer will automatically post your highest
score.

4. Complete the comprehensive final exam. The comprehensive final is worth 100 points. It is
remote and online. (The final exam will NOT be available twice).

5. You are expected to read each chapter and complete the study guide prior to coming to
class.  This increases the quality of class discussions and facilitates your understanding of the
course material and preparation for the exams.

6. Complete the  Study Guide  for each chapter. These are found in and submitted online in
Canvas. Late Study Guides will receive 50% credit and may not be turned in after the unit
closes. Study Guides will be graded on answer quality and completeness. Three or
more  unanswered or incorrect answers will result in a 50%  (5 point decrement) on your study
guide grade.

7. Take at least one Chapter Quiz for each chapter.  These are found in and submitted online in
Canvas. Quizzes are open until the Unit closes.  You may take each quiz up to 5 times. The
computer will post your highest score.

8. Cell Phones: Your cell phones must be turned off and put away during class. Text messaging is
inappropriate and distracting to others. Laptops should not be used for any purpose not
directly related to our class discussion, such as the chapter study guide.

HONOR AND DRESS CODES

The honor code and the dress and grooming code will be observed in class. [Note: Revealing slits in
skirts, capris, flip-flops, low-cut shirts and any degree  of bare midriff are considered inappropriate.] With
regard to the honor code, my expectations for honesty include that you will do your own work on the
individual exams and projects. It is not appropriate for you to tell your classmates what was on or NOT
on the exams.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Brigham Young University-Idaho is committed to providing a working and learning atmosphere, which
reasonably accommodates qualified persons with disabilities. If you have any disability, which may
impair your ability to complete this course successfully, please contact Services for Students with
Disabilities Office, 496-1158. Reasonable academic accommodations are reviewed for all students who
have qualified documented disabilities. Services are coordinated with the student and instructor by this
office. If you need assistance or if you feel you have been unlawfully discriminated against on the basis
of disability, you may seek resolution through established grievance policy and procedures. You should
contact the Personnel Office at 496-1130.
