We are heartened by our victory against Measure J and the strong message it
sends to Venoco and other corporate entities who would seek to bypass
regulatory oversight to impose risky development projects on the public - that
they need to play by the rules or go home!

Commission Meeting in Santa Barbara and
Support Commissioner Benninghoven's
Reappointment!
On August 5th, the Fish and Game Commission will
hold a historic meeting in Santa Barbara, where it will
make critical decisions about what areas off our coast
will be assigned special protection as Marine Protected
Areas (MPAs). It is crucial that the Commission hears
overwhelming public support for implementation of
California's Marine Life Protect Act (MLPA) - a law that

Please attend the August 5th meeting and join Channelkeeper in showing the
Commission that our community supports safeguarding critical marine areas,

such as Naples Reef, which are vital to restoring our marine life, protecting our
cultural heritage, and enhancing recreational opportunities. The meeting will be
held at the Hotel Mar Monte at 1111 East Cabrillo Blvd in Santa Barbara. Email
or call us at 805.563.3377 ext.2 for more information, and visit
www.caloceans.org and www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa for information on MPAs and the
MLPA.

In addition, Santa Barbara's own Donald Benninghoven is up for re-appointment

to the California Fish and Game Commission, but he faces vocal opposition from
special interest groups. We strongly support his re-appointment and ask that

you join us in urging the State Senate to confirm him. Mr. Benninghoven is a
seasoned policymaker who brings a wealth of experience to the Commission,
and will help ensure that protecting public resources is the top priority in the
Commission's decisions. Please click here to send a letter of support for Mr.
Benninghoven's re-appointment. Thank you!

Help Ban Disposable Shopping Bags in CA -

Support AB 1998
Are you sick of seeing plastic bags littering
our streets, creeks and beaches?
Channelkeeper is working to rally support
for Assembly Bill 1998, which would help
Californians shift to reusable bags and
reduce the millions of plastic bags that end
up as litter on our beaches and in our
ocean. The bill has passed the State
Assembly and is headed for the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Gov.
Schwarzenegger has pledged to sign it if it makes it to his desk. You can help by
calling and sending an email to the Senate Appropriations Committee and to
Senator Strickland (if you don't live in Santa Barbara or Ventura counties, click
here to find your senator) and urging him to support the bill. If you own a
business that supports getting rid of disposable bags or have any questions
about the bill, please email or call us at 805.563.3377 ext.0.
