Table (1): data and the results which was collected from the wetted wall gas absorption experiment for
several air and water flow rates

*To calculate the mass transfer coefficient (KL):

1-Calculte the average flux of (O2) using equation:

NA =WA/A
WA = LB (wA, out – wA in)
LB = the mass flow rate of the liquid through the column.
wA, out = oxygen sensor reading for the water out of the column (A 2)
wA in = oxygen sensor reading for the water enters the column (A 1)

A= the area of the gas /liquid interface in the wetted wall column
A = (π dcolumn* Lcolumn)

***A can be calculated using the following diameter for more accurate value:
D= dcolumn – 2 ξ
ξ is the thickness of the falling liquid film.

With ξ= (3μL (w/W)/ρ2g)1/3

μL = Liquid viscosity
w = Liquid mass flow rate
W = π dcolumn
ρ = Liquid density
g= Acceleration of gravity

2- Calculate the driving force for mass transfer at the liquid phase inlet in the
liquid phase outlet using the equation:
∆ cA ln = (∆cA, inlet - ∆cA ln) / ln (∆cA ln)/ (∆cAoutlet)
(∆cA, inlet)= cA measured from O2 sensor - cA@ saturation
(∆cAoutlet)= cA measured from O2 sensor - cA@ saturation

**cA@ saturation: you have to find it from dissolved oxygen @saturation tables in
the certain temperature.

3- Calculate the average mass transfer coefficient using

KL = NA / ∆ cA ln
Dimensional analysis shows that these variables can arrange in four
dimensional groups and the dimensional equation should be
(Sh)= f (Sc) 1/2(Ga) 1/6(Re) n

(Sh)L ᾴ (Re) n

(Sh)L = a (Re) n +b
Lin (Sh) L =n Lin (Re)

4- calculate the Sherwood number and Reynolds number using:

Re= 4w/W/ μL Reynolds number

w = liquid mass flow rate

W is perimeter (width) of the liquid film (i.e., for a circular column W=πdcolumn)
In this notation, Г= w/W = the mass flow rate per unit width of the film
μL = kinematic Liquid viscosity

Sh= KLL/D Sherwood number

KL= mass transfer coefficient
L = column length
D = diffusivity

5-plot Sh vs. Re and determine the value of (n)

Lin (sh)

Slope= n

Lin (Re)

Data you may need:

Column diameter = 34 mm
Column height = 900 mm
Wetted perimeter P = 3.14 *3.4 = 10.7 cm 2
Diffusivity (D) = 2.5 *10-5cm2/sec
