Suggested Layout of CSEC Visual Arts Reflective Journal 1/2

SUGGESTED LAYOUT OF CSEC VISUAL ARTS REFLECTIVE JOURNAL

The Journal must be approximately 1,000 words.


Booklet must be no smaller than 21cm x 30cm and no larger than 30cm x 40cm.

Journals should:
- Show creativity and ingenuity
- Be based on culturally relevant themes and concepts (to Trinidad or Caribbean as a whole)
- Show good research skills and analytical competence
- Show a variety of data collection strategies
- Be cohesive and organised
- Be a record of work done over the two years
- It is NOT a personal diary of daily activities
- Must be based on BOTH expressive forms.

1. Cover Page
o The cover design:
▪ Must be aesthetically appealing
▪ It should demonstrate student’s knowledge of design elements and principles (in the
layout, use of colour, lettering, etc…)
o Cover must include:
▪ “Visual Arts Reflective Journal”
▪ Title of the Reflective Journal
▪ Candidate’s Number (DO NOT INCLUDE THE CANDIDATE’S NAME)

4. Introduction
o Background Information
o Why did you choose to do Visual Arts?
o Reasons for selecting the two expressive forms that are explored.
o Reasons for selecting the theme.
o How has art impacted you as a student?

5. Inspiration
o Photos, paintings, poems – anything that has been a source of inspiration for the artwork.
▪ Must properly mounted and labelled (title of work, artist, date, materials, dimensions, location).
▪ Have relevant captions.
▪ Be in sequential order.
▪ Be related to the theme.
▪ Be of good quality.
o Study of an artists who has inspired the work.
o At least five images or work from the artist under study.
o Analysis of artwork.
o How has the artist’s work influenced your work?
▪ A short account of relevance of the artist’s works in comparison to your own work.

Students are encouraged to self-critique, in order to give the reader a better understanding of what the student’s work is about
(demonstrating knowledge of the efficient use of elements and principles of art and design).

Communication of work:
Use correct artistic jargon/ vocabulary
Use correct grammar
Legibility of text

Remember that content should be relevant and support the theme/ concept historically, culturally, contemporarily (art period, group,
country, region), be relevant to the Caribbean region, have relevant supporting information, explain, explore and illustrate concepts.

Students must describe, interpret, evaluate and organise information gathered (style, content, form and function – artist’s work).
Students should add new insight and new meaning to art/information.
Do not just describe steps taken to complete work.
