Art and You

 Art

 Is a tool for communication

 Venue for one to convey or express a thought, emotions and aspirations

 Visual Arts- describe a wide array of artistic disciplines that are appreciated primarily through
sight

 Fine Arts- artworks we readily associate with art.

 First used to describe the art forms created primarily for it’s appearance rather than
it’s practical use

 E.g. drawing, painting, sculpture, print, graphic art, calligraphy, architecture


 Decorative arts- called decorative crafts, are artworks that are both aesthetically pleasing
and functional

 E.g. textile art, glassware, jewelry, furniture, earthenware, metal craft and interior
design

 Contemporary art forms- new and usual art forms that could not be easily categorized
between the fine arts and the decorative arts

 E.g. assemblage, collage, installation, performance art, digital art, land art, conceptual
art,

 Contemporary art- all art works that produced in our present lifetime

 Performing Arts- when artists use their voices and/or body movements to communicate artistic
expression

 Music- a universal form of art. A manipulation of sound and silence

 Art music- music that stems from Western Classical Music. Usually preserved through
written musical notations that were developed in Europe

 Popular music- music that is accessible and commercially available to the public
 Traditional Music- musical forms that are community and culturally based
 Dance- regulated and deliberated order of body movements

 Ballet, Belly dance, break dance, improvisational dance, hip-hop dance, modern dance,
contemporary dance, traditional dance

 Theater or play- often involves the integration and combination of the visual and performing
arts.

 Fine art where actors and actresses perform experiences whether real or imagined, in front
of a live audience
 Mime, puppetry, tragedy, opera, musical theater and traditional theater

 Why Do Artists Create Art?

 Recognition

 Ronald Ventura- made history when his painting the Grayground was sold in an
auction at Sotheby’s Hong Kong for almost 47 million pesos in 2011

 Worship

 Joey Velasco- rendition of Christian- themed artworks. Famous for Hapag ng Pag-asa
which is a version of the Last Supper with street children

 Impulse

 Levi Celerio- credited to have written over 4,000 songs

 Self- expression

Decorative Arts and Crafts

1. Pottery- art and craft of making pots and other wares using clay or mud

a) Burnay- high-temperature pottery

b) Studio pottery- is a handmade one of a kind ceramic that is sought after by collectors

2. Carving- art of manipulating and creating objects by subtracting and shaping solid material such
as wood ans stone

3. Weaving- art of interlacing threads of fibers to create textile, fabric or other similar products

a) Ikat- a dyeing process used by the tribal groups of Mindanao like the T’boli, Bagobo,
Mandaya and etc.

4. Metalwork- art of creating and manipulating metal to create various items such as jewelry,
weapons and etc.

a) Gador- decorated brass urns made using the lost-wax process

 Contemporary art forms

1. Collage- method of combining printed images with other flat media and pasted on a canvas or
board

2. Assemblage- term used by Jean Dubuffet in 1952 to describe a series of artworks made from
paper collages, wood scraps and other found objects

a) Lao Lianben- one of the pioneers in assemblage art in the Philippines

3. Mobile- sculptural work that is suspended from the ceiling of a protruding base

a) Alexander Calder- pioneer of mobile art

4. Performance art- mix of visual arts and the performing arts.

a) Early incarnations were the Happenings of the Dada Movement

b) The medium used is the artist himself and the artwork is the acting and the movements of
the artist
5. Installation Art- involves the arrangement of objects in a given space

 Music

 Kundiman and Harana

a) Kundiman- a product of Spanish colonization

i. Is an art song that signifies love and affection

ii. Melody is often smooth, flowing and gentle

iii. Ex. Nicanor S. Abelardo’s “Nasaan ka Irog” and Dr. Francisco Santiago’s “Pakiusap”

b.) Harana- is a traditional courtship ritual in the Philippines wherein a suitor serenades his
object of affection

 Ballad- traditionally a song that narrates an event in a community

a.) Ex. Idangdang of Bukidnon, Iiyangkit parang sabil of the Tausug and composo of the
Hiligaynon and Yoyoy Villame’s “Magellan”

b) balladeer- is an artist whose set of songs are primarily romantic songs

c) Ex composers are: Ernani Cuenco and Jose Mari Chan and also Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Sarah
Geronimo and Jed Madela

 Chamber Music- form of instrumental music composed by a small ensemble wherein each part is
played by one player, as opposed to an orchestra

a) Pioneered by Dr. Francisco Santiago and Nicanor S. Abelardo

b) Ex. Arlene Chongson’s Luduyan I and II and Conrado del Rosario’s Yugto

 Choral Music- musical composition intended to be performed by a group of singers called a choir

a) “Madz”- one of the most awarded choral groups in the Philippines and in the whole world

b) Well known choral groups: Samiweng Singers of Laoag, Ilocos Norte, the University of
Visayas Chorale and the Zamboanga Hermosa chorale

 Lithurgical music- songs intended for Christian church services.

a) Inspired by Jewish chants during their religious rituals

b) Ex. Francisco F. Feliciano’s Mass of Saint Andrew, Ryan Cayabyab’s Misa and the gospel
songs of Gary Valenciano

 Opera- combination of both music and theater

a) A sung drama that entails collaborative efforts of singers, dancers, composers,


choreographers etc.

b) Aria- song sung in solo that portrays the character’s emotional state

c) It was introduced in the middle of the 1800’s

d) Example: Felipe Padilla’s Noli me Tangere, the first full length Filipino opera and Reynaldo
T. Paguio and Fides Asensio’s Mayo Bisperas ng Liwanag

e) Opera singers: Jovita Fuentes, the first Filipina to be recognized as a National artist for
Music and Rachelle Gerodias
 Pop Music- popular music that is readily available to the brand populace

a) Encompasses a multitude of different genres of music such as RnB, rap , rock, Hip-Hop,
Dance and etc.

b) Early examples of Filipino pop: Fred Panopio’s “O! Ang mga Babae” and Yoyoy Villame’s
“Mag Exercise Tayo tuwing Umaga”

c) Pinoy pop or Filipino pop music- came about when Filipino musicians wanted to create
music that they can call their own.

d) Hotdog- similarly combined Western pop with Filipino lyrics and created what was then
known as the Manila Sound

e) Pinoy folk music- heavily influenced by the musical style of Western folk singers such as Bob
Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary among others

f) Ex. Of folk music artists: Joey Ayala and Bayang Barrios

g) Rap- originated from the African-Americans and is distinctive of it’s fast and rhythmic
narration accompanied by electronic music

i. Pioneers were Francis Magalona’s “Mga Kababayan Ko” and Andrew E.’s “Huamanap
ka ng Pangit”.

h.) Hip-hop- incorporates not only rap but also includes RnB, beatboxing and electronic and
turntables as accompaniments

I.) Contemporary rap artists include Gloc-9, Abra and Apl.de.ap

 Protest songs- songs that bring to light injustices and inequality in society

a) “Bayan Ko”- is one of the most popular and recognizable example of a protest song

i. Collaboration between Jose Corazon de Jesus who wrote the lyrics that was set to
music by Constancio de Guzman

 Dance

 Aerobic dance- dance routine made into an exercise program

a) Three phases: warm-up followed by aerobic dance and capped with cooldown exercises

b) Examples: jazzercise, aero hip-hop, ballroom dancing, belly dancing and more recently
Zumba

 Ballet- a style and dance technique that follows strict set of moves and performance

a) Modern ballet- uses traditional ballet, techniques and style set to contemporary ideas and
subjects.

i. Uses contemporary and sometimes experimental attitude toward traditional dance


techniques and style

ii. Pioneer of modern dance is Alice Reyes, the founder of Ballet Philippines

iii. Examples of modern ballet performances: Tony Fabella’s Liman Dipa and Beautiful
Girls

b) Opera ballet- more modern version is rock ballet

i. Type of ballet combines dance and singing


ii. Mahal- one of the first rock opera ballet in the Philippines. Collaborative effort of Abel
Labrador, Mon Faustmann, Rahissa Lahat-Wala and Julie and Rose Borromeo

iii. Rama Hari- by Ryan Cayabyab, Bienvenido Lumbera and Alice Reyes

c) Folkloric ballet- performance that presents subjects and themes based on the art and
culture of a community

i. Examples: Agnes by Agnes Locsin, Tapestry/Bayanihan by Alice Reyes and Baile de Aye
by Corazon Generoso-Inigo

ii. Three major ballet companies: Ballet Philippines (1969), Philippine Ballet Theater
(1987) and Ballet Manila (1995)

 Folk dance- different dances performed by various cultural groups throughout the community

a) Often performed during rituals, festivals, fiestas and other community celebrations

b) Mimetic dances- dance movements that imitate animals

i. Movements that copy communal activities such as planting rice and harvesting

c) Examples: Kadal Blelah of T’boli and the Kinabuwa of the Mandaya, Mananagat of Cebu,
Tanobong of Pangasinan

 Street Dance- vernacular dances or dances that developed organically within a community

a) Popular street dance moves such as b-boying, popping, locking and roboting.
