c. Construct a model of solar system showing the relative sizes of the planets and their relative
distance from the Sun. (S6ES-IVi-j-7)

Explore and Explain:

THE SOLAR SYSTEM - Our Solar System consists of a central star (the Sun), the nine planets orbiting
the sun, moons, asteroids, comets, meteors, interplanetary gas, dust, and all the “space” in between
them. The eight planets of the Solar System are named from Greek and Roman Gods and
Goddesses.

Our Solar System is categorized according to size and composition.


There are two main categories of planets:

a. Small Rocky Planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, and Pluto)


b. Gas Giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune)

CHARACTERISTICS OF SMALL ROCKY PLANETS


 They are made up mostly of rock and metal.
 They are very heavy.
 They move slowly in space.
 They have no rings and few moons (if any).
 They have a diameter.

Among small rocky planets,the Earth is the only planet known to support living organism.

CHARACTERISTICS OF GAS GIANTS


 They are made up mostly of gases (primarily hydrogen & helium).
 They are very light for their size.
 They move quickly in space.
 They have rings and many moons.
 They have a diameter

Activity No. 2 Solar System


Problem:
What makes up a Solar System?

What you need:

Round piece of cardboard Art paper with different colors


Pair of scissors Glue or tape
String Pencil and crayons
Compass for making circles

What you need to do:

1. Get the center of the circular cardboard. The center will present the position of the sun.
2. Draw circles around the center of the cardboard using compass. The circles will represent
the orbits of the eight planets.
3. Make a hole in the center where the sun will be hung. Punch a hole in different orbits for
planets.
4. Put a space between a space between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter. This will represent the
asteroid belt.
5. Using the different colors of the art papers, cut circles to represent the sun and the other
planets. Consider their sizes in making your circles of the sun and other planets. Write the
name of each planet on the back of each circle.
6. Tape the sun and planets on each string. Attach to the cardboard the stringed sun and
planets through the holes.
7. Once the planets and sun are attached to the cardboard, adjust the string so that they will
all be aligned.
8. Hang your solar system mobile by tying three pieces of string to the top of the cardboard.
