Preamble
Los exámenes supletorios, remediales y de gracia serán reemplazados por un proyecto o trabajo escrito
adaptado a la problemática actua. Existen ocho temas sobre los cuales los estudiantes podrán trabajar:

c. Ideas que cambiaron el mundo
d. La democracia
e. Cuidando de la naturaleza
f. La Interculturalidad
g. Los derechos humanos
h. La ciudadanía global

For 9th Grade Science and Pre-AP Biology & Environmental Science, we shall use c) above: ‘Ideas that
changed the world’, with a specific focus upon scientific ideas. Here is a selection of some of the most
important scientific advances, from which you should choose one for your project:

 Farming – the Neolithic revolution that brought us modern-day farming


 DNA – the story behind the modelling of DNA by Watson & Crick
 Vaccination – from Dr. Jenner to Louis Pasteur
 Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection – Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace
 Gravity – Sir Isaac Newton
 Archimedes’ principle of buoyancy
 Einstein’s theory of relativity
 The microscope
 Electricity – Benjamin Franklin & Michael Faraday
 Penicillin and antibiotics – Alexander Fleming

(You may choose a different scientific advance but ask for approval first.)

OBJECTIVES
1. Research and investigate one of the scientific discoveries or advances which have changed the world.
2. Prepare a visual presentation of your findings, to include the following:
a. Historical background and context
b. Scientist(s) involved in the discovery or advance
c. Details about the scientific process or methodology or investigation which led to the discovery
or advance
d. Implications and benefits – how the discovery or advance ‘changed the world’
e. Conclusions
f. Bibliography and acknowledgements
3. Be able to discuss, support, amplify and answer questions about your investigation by means of a
virtual conference or a presentation in front of your teacher.

(The visual presentation may be completed in whatever format you prefer, including: video, Powerpoint or
Google Slides, Prezi, Infographic, FlipBook or eBook. Please ensure that the format you choose is easily
openable and downloadable.)

CONTENT
Using the format of Powerpoint as your guide, the visual presentation would contain a minimum of the
following ‘slides’, including both text and images on every ‘slide’:
1. Title ‘slide’, containing data and information such as your name, class, date and title of the project.
2. Introductory ‘slide’, briefly outlining the historical context, more important scientist(s) involved,
important date(s), and implications of the scientific discovery or advance – how it “Changed the
world”. (Effectively an Abstract or summary of your entire project.)
3. Minimum of 6 content ‘slides’, containing information about:
a. the scientist(s) who made the discovery or advance
b. the process or methodology or investigation which led to the discovery or advance
c. the implications for the life of humans – how the scientific discovery or advance has changed
the world
4. Conclusion ‘slide’ which attempts to evaluate the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ of the discovery or advance,
and also refers to questions which still need to be asked and answered.
5. Bibliography ‘slide’ which acknowledge all your sources of information.

(This is a minimum of 10 slides in a Powerpoint, or information boxes in an Infographic, or pages in a


FlipBook, etc.)

DELIVERY
The last date for delivery of the Supletorio project is Thursday 16th July, by 1:00pm. If you deliver on that
date, there will be no time for your project to be revised, so that you can make corrections or adjustments. You
are recommended to deliver the project by Tuesday 14th July.
