Course Description

With the increasing globalization and technological developments, and the changing external
environments due to disruptive innovations, organizations are constantly seeking to update their
internal capabilities. These changes have caused shifts in management focus from a traditional
monitoring and control of employees focus to their engagement and involvement in innovation
activity, leading to heterarchical sort of structures, which allow a certain level of discretion to
employees in taking initiatives, which could foster their development as well as the development of
the organization as a whole. This new era of management asks the managers to focus on leading
change, harness people’s creativity, and find shared visions and values. This course focuses on
exploring the newest management ideas for turbulent times in a way that is interesting and valuable
while retaining the best of traditional management thinking. The case-based methodology of the
course assures that students can apply the contemporary concepts of management in the
organizations.

Presentation and Final Project

Presentation - 10%
For your 10% Presentation you will prepare a business Case Study on a company (Local, a foreign MNC
operating in Pakistan or a public sector organization). We will cover multiple case studies in class so
you will understand the essence of a business case study including the type of information you should
collect and present.

The business case should be based on empirical research which means you will be required to collect
data through detailed interview/s with the CEO (or decision maker) of the organization. The
interview/s should land you with a potential problem/challenge/opportunity on which a business case
can be written. Your presentation should include the following,

 Synopsis
 History of the organization
 Circumstances leading to the issues
 Limitations of the organization/ decision maker
 Urgency of solution
 Potential solutions

Final Project - 15%

Your final project is to write an Industry note on a Pakistani industry of your choice. You will be
required to select your industry and take approval by week 6 of the semester. We will cover detailed
industry notes in the class so you will have a clear understanding what an industry notes entails. Do
understand that your Industry note/analysis should consider the entire industry within Pakistan and
not just a particular region. Considering time and resource constraint it’s not expected that you write
the note as comprehensive as covered in class, but since you will have a large group you are expected
to cover at least (anything above and beyond is always appreciated) the following,

 Introduction of the industry

o Major companies in the industry
o Major products
o SWOT and TOWS matrix
 Detailed analysis of the past, current, future environment including PESTLED and international
factors and their effect on the industry
 Competitiveness of the industry and what drives its strategy – use Porter’s five forces model
 Industry Size and Growth Trends
 Seasonality (if applicable)
 Pakistan’s Industry vs. global industry
 Key challenges facing the industry
 Industry’s steps to meet these challenges

Sources of Information:
Your source of information should be published articles, news reports, and interviews with the industry
experts. All should be cited using Harvard referencing style (in text and in references section).
Notes:
Failure to properly cite paraphrased material and direct quotes in your Industry note will be considered
plagiarism and academic dishonesty. As a result, you will receive an “F” in the course.

6
The final report should be submitted in form of hard and soft copy. Failure to submit any will result in
100% marks deduction.

The dates/weeks provided in this section are a reasonable estimate of due dates for presentation and
