Short Essay: The Clinical Nutrition Manager’s Handbook

The IRB helps to define both legal and ethical issues that should be considered before conducting any
research study. To demonstrate respect for all people, the IRB states that researchers are obligated to
ensure that all participants who are involved in research have voluntarily consented to participate and
understand all of the risks and benefits that are associated with the study. Researchers also need to
protect the participant’s confidentiality and should require a greater protection for those who are at
higher risks, such as children, older adults or those with disabilities. In order to obtain a waiver of
consent, there is a certain criteria that needs to be met. The criteria is as follows:

 The research involves no more than minimal risk to the subject

 The study will not adversely affect the rights and welfare of the subjects
 The research could not practically be carried out without the waiver or alteration
 The subject will be provided with additional information that is pertinent after their
participation whenever it is appropriate

FINER is short for feasible, interesting, novel, ethical and relevant. The overall research process truly
begins with the identification of a question that is important and relevant in today’s society. To define
the question of research, it is important to be knowledgeable about the literature that already exists and
figure out what portions of the issue is lacking evidence or needs more clarification. Diving in a bit
deeper, the F in FINER, feasible is making sure that all aspects of the study are realistic and are
accounted for. For example, if one wishes to compare REE of someone who is ill using indirect
calorimetry to REE calculated using an equation, it is crucial that you have a metabolic cart and someone
to operate it correctly to make the overall study feasible. Sample size, length of time that the study will
be conducted for, and funding are all areas to consider when looking at feasibility of a study.

Next, the “I”, otherwise known as “interesting,” means that the study should appeal to yourself and
your audience, such as administrators, potential funding groups, physician or nurse leaders and your
staff. N, or novel, means that the research should lead to new evidence that helps to answer a question.
Research practices must ALWAYS be ethical. In order to be able to present and publish research that you
conducted to outside people, approval of the protocol from an authorized institution research board
(IRB) is required before any data is even collected. Lastly, any question that is developed should be
relevant. To decide whether or not a question is relevant, one should ask their self ‘so what?”

The overall question that is developed is so important because it helps to drive the research process and
ultimately the overall outcome. Creating a goal that is both specific and measurable will help to
effectively manage your time and resources.
An IDP, or an individual development plan, is a way to help those identify their strengths, interests, and
areas for improvement so one can better reach their career goals and meet certain job expectations.

A huddle is a brief meeting that can take place either daily or weekly during work hours. During this
time, employees are able to get together to discuss operational issues, discuss/develop a plan of action
for the upcoming work week, and recognize others. Here at Henry Ford Hospital, I had the opportunity
to attend Safety Huddle as well as a staff huddle in the retail kitchen. During this time, Chef G was able
to discuss upcoming events, delegate tasks, recognize certain workers for their hard work and
dedication, and answer any questions that staff members had. Personally, I believe that this is an
effective way to communicate with staff members and make sure that everyone is on the same page. If
there is a major concern, I do believe that written communication is also necessary for documentation
purposes. As far as time goes, I believe that a quick huddle is a great way to bring everyone together and
address questions as a whole because odds are if one person has a question, then another person
probably has the same question too. I believe that daily huddles are not always necessary, but a weekly
huddle to discuss any important topics for the upcoming work week can be very helpful to ensure that
there is no confusion.
