I Resolve
Not to Resolve
By Stacy Hammac

I’m not much of a resolution kind of girl.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the whole
“new year, new you” mentality. But I also
understand myself. After years of resolutions that
last about two weeks, I’m taking a new approach this
year. Instead of New Year’s Resolutions, I’m going for
New Year’s Tries. As in, “I’m going to TRY to eat healthier.”
See where I’m going with this?

There is actually some logic behind the madness. For

example, let’s hypothetically say I were going to resolve to
eliminate cookies from my diet. I would think about cookies
a lot more than I have in the entire past twelve months.
Just because I knew I couldn’t have one. And sure enough, What can a cookie do?
I’d come in contact with a cookie, eat it, then feel the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbZgB6hJYJY

cause was hopeless and abandon it. And then you’ve got
cookiegeddon on your hands.

With my New Year’s Tries, though, I’ll merely “try” to avoid

cookies. If I slip up and stumble upon a cookie, no big deal.
I just need to try harder. But that’s certainly no reason to go
all Cookie Monster on a poor Girl Scout. Sure, it’s a
half-ass approach. But I think it’s the way to go for me.

To all of you out there determined to usher in a host of

resolutions, I wish you the best. I’ll try to support you as Dr. Phil’s Wacky Resolutions.

Yes, I am a photographer, but photography is not my job, it is my
obsession. My life is in such a good place, and I would have it
no other way. I love what I do. I have been making photographs
for a couple decades. Seemingly I am never satisfied with what
I do. I am continually studying, researching, and experimenting
to find the next things that will make me happy. Photojournalism
is my preference, although I can adjust my style to meet your
needs. I am very capable to produce a superior product in a short
period, but nothing can beat being given the time to explore and
seek out the very best (this is a shameless hint). When I appear
to wander around aimlessly, I find that which cannot be found
otherwise. Interestingly, I never know what that perfect image is
until my lens runs into it. Let me do my thing and you will receive
a product which will contain emotion, love and personal value.

I have a thing for umbrellas. There is just something about them.
Perhaps it’s because they are personal. Or maybe I like them
because there are so many to choose from. When you see one,
it often indicates a potential change in the weather. The month
of January is also a time for potential changes. The Holidays are
now summed up and the future is right in front of us. We have
thoughts of resolutions and we likely have things we want to
put behind us. Last year is now just memories. This year might
be the best year we ever have. It also may be our last. Whether
2011 becomes the best of times, or the worst, here we are and
here 2011 is. I tend to look for the good, even when everyone
else is pointing out the bad. Great lemonade can be made with

Henry Ford once said: “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is

progress. Working together is success.”

He should know. As the inventor of the assembly line method, Ford was not
only a trailblazer in the manufacturing industry, he became the example of what
“working smart” meant. Visit any of our local manufacturing plants in the
Upstate and you’ll see his concept in real life, even almost 100 years later.

There’s one thing we tend to miss in business, though. The “working together”
Follow process, while it works well within the walls of one business, loses steam when

many of us think of our competitors.

The thinking goes a little something like this: “I’m a publication, and
they’re a publication. We both need advertisers to survive. If I work
with them, I hurt myself.” But when we do this, what we really end
up doing is missing the vision of the company, and focusing solely
on the end result.

The thing is, my vision may be very different than someone

else’s. I may want to accomplish something far different, as well.
But if I focus on the end result—the money—I can get so
bogged down in the Hatfield-and-McCoy-mess that I end up
missing…well, everything.

So, I’ll pose this question: what could we get if we all

worked together? Sure, I may think I need that customer’s
dollar more than my “competition,” but the fact is, when
we think about dollars in this economy, even the power
company is competition, is it?

So, this year, start off on a better foot. I’ll give you a few
hints as to what I’ll be doing:
1) Find the vision. Lost it? Better get it back. Never had
one? Get one before your customer finds out. Don’t want
one? Well, I can’t help you with that.
2) Build the plan. That would be, the plan that helps
implement the vision.
3) Find your competition. Who are they? When you look at
your vision and what you are doing, does it match theirs? Do you
even know? If not, they are perfect for step #4.
4) Get coffee. Call them up, and take them out. Find out more about
their #1. Likely, there are ways you can help each other. But you won’t
know if you don’t ask.

Yeah, I know it may hurt a little. But wouldn’t it be cool if

your “competition” was the one helping you get the next
customer? (And don’t think it can’t happen. Look at what
you’re reading right now.)

Happy 2011. Here’s to the next partnership, the next

customer, and a year that will bring both.

Resolved and Resolute?
By Jay Spivey

There are three ways of dealing with New Year resolutions:

1. You keep them and wear your determination as a badge of honor.
2. You make them and then promptly break them.
3. You don’t make any…
I know that I fit into #2 and #3 when it comes to this question of yearly
resolve, but this year feels different somehow…

I like Benjamin Franklin’s line: “Resolve to perform what you ought; perform
without fail what you resolve.” It sounds strict and disciplined as any
sentence with the word resolve in it should. So I am going to commit to a
number of resolutions that will affect me both personally and professionally.
Ben will get me to where I need to go. I will resolve to...do many things.

I also like what Clement Freud, a very interesting British character and
grandson of Sigmund, once said:

“If you resolve to give up smoking, drinking and loving,

you don’t actually live longer; it just seems longer.”
This quote seems to evoke a lot more fun than old Ben’s stern statement. I
can also see long nights, headaches and broken hearts coming out of using
this philosophy as a guide for the new year. Fun would be had and perhaps
even a little adventure or two could be in the offing. Interestingly, I find
myself day-dreaming more about the fun that could be had if I upped the
crazy quotient in my life. Hmmm…

This year will be different. There will be no opting out of making resolutions.

So, I am presented with the angel and devil on my shoulders; the mature
versus the immature, the industrious against the adventurer. A decision must
be made regarding this dichotomous situation. Or does it? I am going to take
both Ben’s and Clement’s philosophies to heart.

I resolve to…
