Yoga is an old discipline from India. It is both spiritual and physical. Yoga uses
breathing techniques, exercise and meditation. It helps to improve health and
happiness. Yoga is the Sanskrit word for union. A person doing yoga will move from
one posture (called asana) to another. For example, the "sun-salutation" contains 12
poses of asanas, one after the other, and is said to help balance body and soul. Yogi
is a person who has mastered yoga or has achieved great success in yoga. A Yogi can
sit in any asana for a given time.

Vegetarianism is the practice of not eating meat or fish. People who follow
vegetarianism are called vegetarians. Vegetarians eat foods like vegetables, fruit,
nuts, beans and grains. Some vegetarians eat or drink animal products, like milk and
eggs. There are many reasons for not eating meat. Some think that it is wrong to kill
animals; others think that eating meat is bad for their health or the world. This is
because land used for animals can be used to grow food. Some people may become
vegetarians because their religion says not to eat animals. Vegetarians who do not
drink milk and eat eggs are called vegans. Vegans also often will not use animal
products like leather, but many vegetarians do use animal products.

Addiction is when the body or mind badly wants or needs something in order to work
right. When you have addiction to something it is called being addicted or being an
addict. When somebody is addicted to something, they can become sick if they do not
get the thing they are addicted to. But taking more of the thing they are addicted to
can also hurt their health. Some people who are addicts need to go to a doctor or
hospital to cure the addiction, so they no longer want or need the drug. People can
also be addicted to other things which are not drugs. You may hear people talk about
being "addicted to the Internet" or "addicted to chocolate" or gambling. This means
that they get into a habit of enjoying that thing, so if they have to go without it for a
while, they miss it a lot.

Monopoly is a board game played by two to eight players. It is played on a board with
spaces. In the original version the spaces were named after streets. These streets are
actual streets in Atlantic City in New Jersey in the United States. Like many board
games, each person has his own game token that he moves on the board. If he or she
passes the go space, he or she collects $200. There is also a pair of dice, and play
money. A person wins by having the most money at the end of the game. People play
monopoly for different reasons. Some may play for family game night, others use it
as a learning tool at school, and others play it just to have fun.

the Americans were no longer under British rule. Before 1776, the United States of
America was not a country. The individual states were colonies of the British Empire.
This means that the King and Parliament of Great Britain ruled the Colonies. Many
Americans did not like paying taxes to Great Britain when they did not have anyone
to speak for them in Parliament. The American people wanted to be treated like
British citizens. When the King of Great Britain, King George III, and Parliament heard
about the Declaration, they were angry. Great Britain and the people in America had
already been fighting in a war called the American Revolution. America won the war,
and in 1783 Great Britain had to recognize the independence of the new country, the
United States.

have been engineered genetically (GM organisms). GM food either contains GM
organisms, or GM organisms have been used to create the food. The first genetically
modified food animal could be salmon. Commercial sale of genetically modified food
began in 1994. Genetically modified foods include: soybean, corn, rice, and cotton
seed oil. The aims include faster growth, production of extra nutrients, or some other
beneficial purpose. GM livestock have also been experimentally developed. Research
is being done on bacteria which would speed up making cheese. Genetically modified
yeast could be used to make beer that has fewer calories.

Modern graffiti was made famous in New York City in the early 1970s by the children
of the working class. They called it "writing," and called themselves "writers." In a
1971 New York Times article, the term "graffiti" was first used to refer to the new
urban art explosion that was becoming popular in New York City. Graffiti can be
thought of as a part of hip hop or street protest. It is often but not always illegal.
Some cities have small areas where graffiti can be made. Some people consider
graffiti as not only something bad, but something good, like art. Some people pay
graffiti artists to do graffiti on their buildings.

Social networks are held together by common interest. This may be employment,
common interest in a sport or pastime, a religion. Often the network has an identity
of its own which is quite real, even though it may have no official recognition.
Networks may be centered on places, or on families, or on worldwide communities
with common interests. How big a personal network becomes depends on the
individual and the type of relationships considered. The set of people that a person
knows well or with whom a person frequently interacts is usually about several
hundred. There is a so-called "Law of 150" which suggests that about 150 people is
the best size for a village or large clan though most people live in much bigger towns.

Pompeii was a Roman city. Now it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the 24th of
August, 79 AD, a volcano called Mount Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the city and
its people, killing 2,000 of them. Pompeii is now considered one of the world's most
important historical sites because of the way the volcanic ash preserved the city and
its people. This gives historians and archaeologists a vivid picture of life in the Roman
Empire around 2,000 years ago. Archaeologists have found graffiti written by the
people who lived in the town. Pompeii is an interesting attraction for tourists from
around the world and is visited by 2.5 million people every year.

allergic to, there can be many different reactions. Their eyes may become very itchy,
and their noses may become drippy or stuffy. They may cough and sneeze. They may
develop a rash. Their faces may swell up. If it is a food allergy, the person may get an
upset stomach. Sometimes a person's throat may swell up so much that the person
can no longer breathe. When this happens, a doctor must give the person a medicine
to make the swelling go down. Some people with allergies to very common things,
like bee stings or fish, carry this medicine with them so it can be used quickly in an
emergency.

A natural satellite in astronomy is a smaller body which moves around a larger body.
The smaller body is held in orbit by gravitation. Bodies which orbit planets are called
moons. They vary in size, and are ball-shaped. The Earth has only one moon. Some
other planets have many moons, and some have none. When people write just "the
moon", they are usually talking about the moon of the Earth. Earth's moon is written
with a capital letter, Moon. Anything that goes around a planet is called a satellite.
Moons are natural satellites. People also use rockets to send machines into orbit
around the Earth. These machines are called artificial satellites.

The Statue of Liberty, officially named Liberty Enlightening the World, is a monument
symbolising the United States. It commemorates the signing of the United States
Declaration of Independence. It was given to the United States by the people of
France in 1886, to represent the friendship between the two countries established
during the American Revolution. The statue is placed on Liberty Island in New York
Harbor, and it welcomes visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans traveling by
ship. It is one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. In 1984, the Statue of
Liberty became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The UNESCO "Statement of
Significance" describes the statue as a "masterpiece of the human spirit".

Money is what people use to buy things and services. Money is what many people
take for selling their own things or services. There are many kinds of money in the
world. Most countries have their own kind of money, such as the United States dollar

Today, most of what people think of as money is not even things you can hold. It is
numbers in bank accounts, saved in computer memories. Many people still feel more

The Empire State Building is a skyscraper in New York City, United States. It is 381
meters tall and has 102 floors, and the height to its pinnacle is 1,454 feet. Named
after the popular nickname for New York, The Empire State, it is one of the most
famous landmarks in the US. It was completed in 410 days. It opened on the 1st of
May, 1931, when United States President Herbert Hoover pushed a button in
Washington, D.C. to turn on the lights. The Empire State Building was the tallest
building in New York City and the world until the first World Trade Center towers
opened in 1973. When these towers were brought down in the attacks on the 11th of
September, 2001, the Empire State Building was again the tallest building in New

A skyscraper is a very tall building, usually more than 152 metres in height. Most You have to talk continuously, starting with "I've chosen photo number..."
skyscrapers are built in urban areas such as cities, and they are very common in the
central business district areas of many large cities including New York City, Chicago,
London, Paris, Sydney, Beijing, Berlin, Toronto, Moscow, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
Originally, the word "skyscraper" meant a tall sail on a sailing ship. Over time, the
word's meaning has changed, and today it means a tall building. Until the nineteenth
century, buildings taller than six stories tall were not common. The first building to be
considered a skyscraper, the Home Insurance Building, was built in Chicago, Illinois in
the United States. The building, ten stories high, was built from 1884 to 1885. It was
destroyed in 1931 because they wanted to build another building in its previous
place.

An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth. Earthquakes are caused by
tectonic movements in the Earth's crust. The main cause is when tectonic plates ride
one over the other, causing mountain building, and severe earthquakes. The
boundaries between moving plates form the largest fault surfaces on Earth. When
they stick, motion between the plates leads to increasing stress. This continues until
the stress rises and breaks, suddenly allowing sliding over the locked portion of the
fault. This releases the stored energy as shock waves. Earthquakes are usually quite
brief, but may repeat. The sudden release of tension in the tectonic plates sends
waves of energy that travel through the Earth. The study of earthquakes is called
seismology. Seismology studies the cause, frequency, type and size of earthquakes.

countries. Some, like Russia, are large with many large cities. Others, like the Vatican,
are small. The five countries with the most people are China, India, the United States,
Indonesia, and Brazil. About 90% of people live in the north half of the world, which
has most of the land. Scientists think that people originally came from Africa. Now,
70% of all people do not live in Africa but in Europe and Asia. People change the Earth
in many ways. They have been able to grow plants for food and clothes for about ten
thousand years. When there was enough food, they were able to build towns and
cities. Near these places, men and women were able to change rivers, bring water to
farms, and stop floods from coming over their land. People found useful animals and
bred them so they were easier to keep.

Radio is a way to send electromagnetic signals over a long distance, to deliver
information from one place to another. Many people worked to make radio possible. You have to talk continuously, starting with "I've chosen photo number..."
A machine that sends radio signals is called a transmitter, while a machine that "picks
up" the signals is called a receiver. A machine that does both jobs is a "transceiver".
When radio signals are sent out to many receivers at the same time, it is called a
broadcast. Television also uses radio signals to send pictures and sound. Radio signals
can start engines moving so that gates open on their own from a distance. Radio
signals can be used to lock and unlock the doors in a car from a distance. Radio
waves are still used to send messages between people. Policemen, firemen and other
people who help in emergency use a radio emergency communication system to
communicate. It is like a mobile phone, which also uses radio signals, but the distance
they reach is shorter and both people must use the same kind of radio.

Art is a creative activity by people. The artist hopes that it affects the emotions of You have to talk continuously, starting with "I've chosen photo number..."
people who experience it. Artists express themselves by their art. Some people find
art relaxing. Many people disagree on how to define art. Some say people are driven
to make art due to their inner creativity. Art includes drawing, painting, sculpting,
photography, performance art, dance, music, poetry, prose and theatre. In some
societies, people think that art belongs to the person who made it. They think that the
artist put his or her "talent" into the art. In this view, the art is the property of the
artist. In other societies, people think that art belongs to no one. They think that
society has put its social capital into the artist and the artist's work. In this view,
society is a collective that has made the art, through the artist.

Archaeology is the study of the past by looking for the remains and artifacts left by why you decided to show the picture to your friend
the people who lived long ago. These remains can include old coins, tools, buildings,
and inscriptions. Archaeologists use these remains to understand how people lived. You have to talk continuously, starting with "I've chosen photo number..."
When archaeologists do fieldwork, they look for the remains, often by digging in the
ground. When things are found, or even when nothing is found, the results of the
fieldwork are taken back to a base. Short term, the base is often on or near the site.
Longer term, the results will usually go to a university or museum. Everything is
written down on paper or entered into a computer. Gradually, they build up a picture
of what happened long ago. Archaeologists publish their research so others can
understand what they learned. Archaeologists do not all study the same civilizations,
they specialize in different areas of interest. Some fields of interest include Ancient
Egypt, Ancient China, or the Vikings.

original theme park, Magic Kingdom, is designed similarly to Disneyland. Walt Disney
created "Disney World" to have a vacation resort that was much different from
Disneyland's one-day visit; this includes a much wider variety of sports, recreation,
themed resort hotels and entertainment. It covers an area of 50 square miles. The
theme parks come with lots of different and fun rides and you can go swimming at
the water parks. The rides are related to the books and films that Disney created.

the government, such as the military and police, provide services such as education
and health care, and to maintain or build things like roads, bridges and sewers. Often
because different parts of governments use taxes for different things, people end up
paying lots of taxes. In the United States, for example, the national government has
an income tax; most states have an income tax or a sales tax, or both; and cities and
towns may have a sales tax or a property tax. In some states the sales tax is different
in each county. In ancient times, people from one city or area would attack another
place, and make the people there pay tribute. Tribute meant that the attacked people
would pay money (or other things), and the attacker would stop attacking them.

The constitution of a country or a state is a special type of law document that tells
how its government is supposed to work. It tells how the country's leaders are to be
chosen and how long they get to stay in office, how new laws are made and old laws
are to be changed or removed, what kind of people are allowed to vote and what
other rights they are guaranteed, and how the constitution can be changed. Limits
are put on the Government in how much power they have within the Constitution.
On the other hand, countries with repressive or corrupt governments frequently do
not stick to their constitutions, or have bad constitutions without giving freedom to
citizens and others. This can be known as dictatorship or simply "bending the rules". A
Constitution is often a way of uniting within a Federation.

World Heritage Sites are places in the world which are very important from the
cultural or natural point of view. These places are selected by UNESCO, a part of the You have to talk continuously, starting with "I've chosen photo number..."
United Nations. The sites are places such as a forest, mountain, lake, desert,
monument, building, complex, or city. As of 2014, 1007 sites in 161 different countries
are listed. There are 779 cultural sites, 197 natural sites, and 31 mixed properties.
Italy has 50 sites on the list, which is the most for any country. Each World Heritage
Site remains part of the legal territory of the nation where the site is located.
UNESCO wants everyone in the world to work to protect each site. Until the end of
2004, there were six criteria for cultural heritage and four criteria for natural heritage.
In 2005, this was modified so that there is only one set of ten criteria. Nominated
sites must be of "outstanding universal value" and meet at least one of the ten
criteria.

A leap year is a year in which an extra day is added to the Gregorian calendar, which
is used by most of the world. While an ordinary year has 365 days, a leap year has
366 days. The extra day is added to the month of February. In an ordinary year,
February has 28 days, but in a leap year, it has 29 days. The extra day, called a leap
day, is the same day of the week as the first day of the month, February 1. Also, in a
leap year, the months of January, April, and July all start on the same day of the
week. A leap year comes once every four years. Because of this, a leap year can
always be evenly divided by four. A number of countries use a lunar calendar. They
have leap years when they add an extra lunar month. Different calendars add the
extra month in different ways.

A cloud is water vapour in the atmosphere. Water on the Earth turns into an invisible
gas and rises up into the sky. Clouds form when the atmosphere can no longer hold
all the invisible air vapor. Higher up where the air is colder, the water condenses: it
changes from a gas to drops of water or crystals of ice. We see these drops of water
as clouds. The drops fall back down to earth as rain, and then the water evaporates
again. This is called the "water cycle". The atmosphere always has some water vapour.
Clouds are not heavy. The water in a cloud can have a mass of several million tons.
Every cubic metre of the cloud has only about 5 grams of water in it. Sometimes,
clouds appear to be brilliant colors at sunrise or sunset. This is due to dust particles
in the air.
