1) A hot stream (A) and cold stream (B), both air, enter an adiabatic mixing chamber at
pressure of 1,02 bar. The mixed air emerges at pressure of 0,99 bar. The mass flow and
the temperatures of the entering streams are:
𝑚̇𝐴 = 3 𝑘𝑔/𝑠 𝑇𝐴 = 500𝐾
𝑚̇𝐵 = 2 𝑘𝑔/𝑠 𝑇𝐵 = 400𝐾
Assuming air to behave as a perfect gas and steady-state conditions calculate the
entropy production rate of mixing process.
2) A stream of ammonia enters a throttling valve at the rate of 0,1 kg/s at 20ºC in the
saturated liquid state. It leaves at -10ºC as wet vapour. The specific entropies and
specific enthalpies of ammonia are given:
State T [ºC] h [kJ/kg] s [kJ/kgK]
1 (inlet) 20 275,1 1,044
2 (outlet) -10 304,1 1,185
If the environmental temperature To is 300 K, calculate the heat transfer rate betweem
ammonia stream and environment and the entropy production rate of the process.
3) A gearbox with power input of 100 kW operates steadily with an efficiency (power
output/power input) of 0,96. The power lost through friction in the gearbox is transferred
as heat to the environment at the temperature of To= 300 K. Calculate the rate entropy
production associated with the operation of the gearbox.
5) Stream enters an adiabatic nozzle at 8 bar and 300ºC and leaves at 2 bar and 150ºC.
Calculate the entropy production of the expansion process in the nozzle per mass of the
steam.
6) A piece of steel with an isobaric heat capacity of 4 kJ/K cools naturally by exchanging
heat with the environment from an initial temperature of 600 K to the final temperature of
300K when reacges a state of thermal equilibrium with the environment. Calculate the
entropy produced in the cooling process.
