Call for participation in the 6th International Scientific Conference on Mediaeval Archaeolgy
of the Institute of Archaeology

Using landscape in the Middle Ages in the light of interdisciplinary research

Dear colleagues!

We are kindly inviting you to take part in the 6th International Scientific Conference on
Mediaeval Archaeology entitled Using landscape in the Middle Ages in the light of
interdisciplinary research organized by the Institute of Archaeology, which will be held in
Zagreb, Croatia, 6–7 June 2019.
At present, it is impossible to observe the human past without looking at the
relationship between man and the environment. On the one hand, the influence of the
environment is noticeable on the choice of places to form settlements, on the economic
activity that affirms and develops a settlement, as well as the non-human influence on
changes (e.g. climate) that could have caused the abandonment of some economic activities or
even entire settlements. On the other hand, human influence on modelling of the environment
and the landscape, because changes in social structures, economics, production, cultural and
religious expressions have certainly brought about changes that have largely restructured and
modified the original landscapes. A multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach is vital to
understand these changes: using landscape and environmental archaeology, geoarchaeology,
paleoecology, paleoclimatology and paleogeography to reconstruct today's lost environmental
conditions and observing the recent landscape as a layered formation of historical events
using historical sources, bioarchaeological data, etc. Thus, the landscape is defined through
the interdependence of climatic conditions, soil type, vegetation etc., and human activities.

The aim of this conference is to observe Man in his ecological and economic
environment during the Middle Ages through an interdisciplinary discussion on topics:

− places of settlement and burial as an expression of adaptation to climate change

and/or resistance to external influences
− ecology of landscapes, land use, land cover changes and soil erosion
− economic and ecological changes, security of food production, choice of cultured
crops
− historical sources of climatic and economic instability
− historical sources and bioarchaeological data on levels of nutritional stress and
disease
− new methodological approaches in archaeology, geoarchaeology, geomorphology,
sedimentology, mineralogy, pedology, palynology, paleobotanics, etc.

This conference invites scholars, early career researchers, and PhD students from
archaeology, anthropology, history, ethnography, geoarchaeology or other related disciplines,
to present their research.
The conference covers the time of the Middle Ages. We welcome proposals for
podium and poster presentations. The conference languages are English and Croatian. We
kindly ask the Croatian presentation holders to add visible information in English to their
slides.
