LA FORMA POSESIVA:
En inglés se forma el posesivo con la preposición "of" delante del sustantivo
o un apóstrofo y "s".
Ponemos el apóstrofo (') después del sustantivo y agregamos una "s". (Antes
esta forma se empleaba sólo para personas o animales, pero ahora es
extensiva a cualquier sustantivo).
John's car.
El auto de John.
Claudia's house.
La casa de Claudia.
The dog's food.
La comida del perro.
The cat's toys.
Los juguetes del gato.
The company's president.

Someone's property.

Today's world.

16
Pero, si el sustantivo que termina en s es singular, agregamos 's.
Doris's job.
El trabajo de Doris.
Carlos's house.
La casa de Carlos.
Muchas veces se omiten los sustantivos después del posesivo cuando éstos
significan edificios o moradas.
I was at my grandparents'.
Estuve en (casa) de mis abuelos.
We went to John's.
Fuimos a la (casa) de John.
We visited St. Peter's in Rome.
Visitamos (la catedral) de San Pedro en Roma.
- Si estos poseen algo en forma separada, se agrega 's a cada uno de ellos.

THERE IS / THERE ARE:
Las expresiones there is y there are se utilizan en inglés para indicar que
un objeto o una persona se encuentran en un sitio especificado. La
particularidad de estas estructuras consiste en que there no es el sujeto
real del verbo to be, aunque lo preceda. El sujeto real del verbo se
encuentra en la posición inmediatamente posterior:

TIME EXPRESSIONS
There are no definite grammar rules for the use of time expressions. Time expressions are
normally used at thebeginning or at the end of the sentence.
There are many time expressions for the present, past and future. Below are the time
expressions divided into these three categories and a list of time expressions that can be
used in all tenses.
PRESENT TENSE
Present tense expresses an unchanging, repeated, or reoccurring action or situation that
exists only now. It can also represent a widespread truth.
Examples:
PAST TENSE
Past tense expresses an action or situation that started and finished in the past. Most
past tense verbs end in -ed. The irregular verbs have special past tense forms which must
be memorized.
Example:
They went on holiday last month.
I visited my best friend yesterday.
41
We flew to Cleveland three weeks ago.
She graduated in 1976.
FUTURE TENSE
Future tense expresses an action or situation that will occur in the future. This tense is
formed by using will/shall with the simple form of the verb. The future tense can also be
expressed by using am, is, or are with going to.
Examples:
We are going to visit our friends in Chicago next week.
He'll be at the meeting tomorrow.
Exercise 1.
Use the correct tense of the verb.
Exercise 2.
Use the correct time expression.

PASADO CONTINUO – (PAST
CONTINUOUS)
El Pasado Continuo, es un tiempo verbal que describe acciones que estaban
siendo realizadas en un momento del pasado al que se hace referencia y que
luego continuaron, por ejemplo:
John was playing tennis at 10 a.m. John estuvo jugando tenis a las 10 a.m.
(Comenzó a jugar tenis antes de las 10 a.m. y continuó haciendolo después)
43
Observa que la forma negativa se construye colocando la partícula NOT
después del verbo TO BE. Puede usarse también la forma contraída
WASN’T o WEREN’T.
También se puede utilizar este tiempo verbal para relatar dos acciones que
sucedieron en el pasado y que una de ellas ya se ha completado. Para ello
utilizamos el Pasado Simple para mencionar lo que ya finalizó y el Pasado
Continuo para relatar lo que sigue ejecutándose.
