5G Scenario
Along with other countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea, the U.S. has been one of the front runners in
terms 5G infrastructure deployment and testing across the country. The U.S. Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) has released spectrum bands at several frequency ranges including high band, mid band, low
band and unlicensed.

“This section will also discuss the country specific impact on 5G roll outs due to COVID-19”
Spectrum allocation
The spectrum allocation in the U.S. is as follows -
• High Band – The FCC has released various frequency bands including 24 GHz, 28 GHz, 37 GHz, 39 GHz, and
47 GHz.
• Mid Band - In this range the FCC has released 2.5-3.5 GHz and 3.7-4.2 GHz bands.
• Low Band - In this range the FCC has released 600 MHz, 800 MHz, and 900 MHz bands
• Unlicensed – The FCC has recognized that unlicensed spectrum will be important for 5G. Hence, the agency
is creating new opportunities for the next generation of Wi-Fi in the 6 GHz and above 95 GHz band.
Infrastructure Policy

Speeding up the federal review of infrastructure: The FCC adopted new rules that will reduce regulatory
impediments to deploying infrastructure needed for 5G and help to expand the reach of 5G for faster and more
reliable wireless services.

Challenges in 5G implementation
The key original device manufacturer (ODM) such as Apple Inc. is facing disputes with Qualcomm, a 5G chipset
manufacturer. Apple has accused 5G chipset manufacturer of pushing the chipset price higher, due to the fact that
Apple is solely relying on Qualcomm for such chipsets.
