Greetings Everyone!

Welcome to your Arcadia University course, LB490 – Liberal Studies Capstone. Congratulations

provide you with the opportunity to complete your researched Senior Thesis project, on a topic
related to the course of study pursued in your Liberal Studies concentration.
Prior to taking this course you should have successfully completed the following prerequisite
courses and should meet the following requirement:
• LB200

• Senior status in Liberal Studies major

Required Materials
The required readings for this course will be posted within each Unit of the course to which the
readings apply. It is your responsibility to keep up with each Unit’s required readings and, when
applicable, to connect those readings to your coursework and thesis project.

Since this course is being delivered online, your computer system will need to meet specific
hardware and software requirements (See Recommendations at the bottom of this page). For this
course, you will need to have access to Microsoft Office (or Open Office). Additionally, we will be
using other software packages, but I've tried to utilize free programs. The URL's for those

Competency Assessment
You will have several opportunities to demonstrate your competence in this course. The following
describes the assignments required for the completion of this course.

Online Course Participation consists of submitting all weekly course work on time and in the
correct format indicated, as well as responding to classmates work as assigned. You will note that
in addition to large assignments and projects scattered throughout the course, you will also
complete smaller assignments related to readings and activities in the course.

2
Please note that responding to a peer’s work with simply, “I agree” is not enough of a reflective
response to provide to a peer for his or her work. Instead, I hope that your responses to one
another will be thought-provoking and create interesting dialogue to help further develop your
thesis work.

The Thesis Paper Proposal is your first assignment in the course related to your Thesis Paper
and is an opportunity for you to provide an overview of your proposed Thesis topic. This is an
important starting point for your project and will allow me the opportunity to obtain a sense of the
direction in which you plan to head and to provide you with important feedback regarding best
practices for quality research and focus around your selected topic.

The Annotated Bibliography will be your opportunity to review possible resources for your
thesis paper in a preliminary fashion, in order to assess their credibility and applicability to your
paper.

The Literature Review is written to review and combine information from the many resources
you may have included in your annotated bibliography, as well as additional resources you may
have found in your continuing research process.

In the Thesis Outline you will be expected to provide an outline of your paper with a skeletal
frame of the way in which you plan to organize your thesis paper, topic information, resources,
etc. The more detail you put into your outline, the stronger backbone you will have for your
subsequent drafts.

You will complete two drafts of your Thesis Paper and then will be expected to hand in a final
copy of your Final Thesis Paper, which will inform your final Thesis Presentation.

All of your major works in the course will be put onto a Wiki Website, which you will be instructed
on how to build and add pages, in order to create your online portfolio.

Introduction

Teaching Methods
The course is fully online and uses audio/video lectures, class discussions via discussion board
postings, written assignments, and the work component of the internship experience.

Course Objectives

• To provide the student with an opportunity to select a focused research project topic
related to their chosen Liberal Studies Concentration.
• To provide students with tools of research to assist them as they write their Senior Thesis
paper and with future research in their chosen field of study.
• To assist the student in making the transition from Liberal Studies student to researcher
and a knowledgeable practitioner in their concentration area through the completion of
their Thesis Paper and Presentation.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course and the conclusion of writing their Senior Thesis Research paper:

• Produce a written thesis of no less than 12 pages discussing their selected thesis topic,
relevant correlations between that topic and their Liberal Studies concentration, and real
world applicability.
• Critically analyze academic texts, visual resources, histories, and their own received
ideologies and assumptions, and stated and unstated biases.
3
• Produce a bibliography of articles, books, other written texts/resources, visual resources
that has informed their thesis paper writing and process.
• Strengthen preparatory skills in writing through the process of topic selection
• Develop and improve revision and organization techniques via quality, detailed outline
creation.
• Analyze their writing for quality and clarity of ideas, organization and competency.
• Develop and improve core liberal arts skills: reading new information and analyzing it;
thinking critically about their reading; synthesizing material; coming to conclusions about
material researched; and articulating that conclusion in writing and verbally.
• Demonstrate knowledge of standard formatting procedures for publication
• Research, write, revise, edit and collaborate to produce a successful thesis paper.
• Construct and organize a wiki that will present their culminating project.

This course is being presented in an online fashion. Therefore, it is important that you login on a
regular basis (daily if possible) and work on a consistent basis to complete your requirements.
Since we are not meeting face-to-face, it will be imperative that you participate in the discussion
forums with your other class members, as well as the phone/Skype conferences with your
instructor. Also, the Cyber Cafe is available for you to develop a sense of community outside of
the course content.

You will need to be self-motivated and try to stay as organized as possible; developing a
schedule would be a good idea. I also suggest that you login in the beginning of the week and
copy all assignments to a Word document. This will allow you to construct a quality answer, spell
check, grammar check, and copy and paste into the forum.

Requirements for Discussion Board Sessions

Citations and Formatting

When quoting the work of another scholar, it is important that you cite the work correctly. The
following are examples of what is expected when referring to the work of another scholar. The
samples below follow APA formatting, the same format expected to be used throughout the
course in your paper writing as well.
For further assistance with citations you can visit the Owl at Purdue Writing Lab website, which
has detailed examples for APA citations, including sample paper formats as well.
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

Example:

Within the context of the posting:

"Constructivism is an epistemology, a theory of knowledge used to explain how we know what we

know" (Lorsbach, 1997).

At the end of the posting or in a Works Cited page at the conclusion of your paper:

Lorsbach, A. (1997). Constructivism as a referent for science teaching. Retrieved January 5,

2006, from http://www.exploratorium.edu/IFI/resources/research/constructivism.html

Peer Interaction
You are required to respond to a minimum of three other student postings for forums that require
interaction with your peers. I will be looking at the way you analyze the postings and extend the
conversation. Please use this opportunity to share your own experiences, but remember to
support your assertions with current research findings. At this level we can all learn a great deal
4
by sharing our experiences.

"Studies report that peer learning promotes greater conceptual and procedural gains for students,
accommodates a broad range of learning styles, results in greater enjoyment of the learning task,
and encourages a stronger persistence in learning" (Johnson & Johnson, 1999).

Your postings will be evaluated based upon the substantive nature and how it efficiently
addresses the question at hand. Simple responses such as "I agree" are of no value and will not
be counted as an acceptable posting. Try to use what I call the "no scroll" rule. If you have to
scroll a great deal to read the posting, it becomes an arduous task. Please try to be succinct and
to the point. Strive to respond at the synthesis or evaluation levels.

Discussion Etiquette
In this course, I welcome the creation of a dialogue that is open, thoughtful, and founded on the
basis of research in the field. At times, some of you will not agree on the positions that are taken
in the forum. This diversity is welcomed. However, each student must exercise respect for the
thoughts and comments that are posted by their peers. If any posted comments are inappropriate
or of an offensive nature, they will be removed from the forum and I will address the issue with
the author of the content.

Please follow the following guidelines:

• Never post, transmit, promote, or distribute content that is known to be illegal.

• Never post harassing, threatening, or embarrassing comments.
• Never post content that is harmful, abusive, racially, ethnically, or religiously offensive,
vulgar or otherwise potentially offensive.
