Berkeley Madonna

Version 8.3 for Windows

September 26, 2005

Introduction
Berkeley Madonna is designed to numerically solve systems of ordinary differential equations
as fast as possible. By compiling textual equations into machine code, it achieves execution
speeds approaching that of handwritten C or FORTRAN code. Models are quickly constructed
thanks to Berkeley Madonna's easy-to-use equation editor. Or you can use the new flowchart
editor to build models graphically. Either way, you'll spend less time building models and a lot
less time running them!

If you are new to Berkeley Madonna, work through the tutorial included in this package. To view
the tutorial, you must have Adobe's Acrobat Reader software installed on your computer. You
can download a free copy of Acrobat Reader from http://www.adobe.com.

In addition to the tutorial, Berkeley Madonna comes with a number of example models which
demonstrate a variety of useful techniques and features. Be sure to take a look at them. Note: if
the graphics in these models are difficult to read, try changing your system font size to "large"
(120dpi) in the "Settings" page of the "Display" control panel.

Berkeley Madonna was originally developed to run STELLA™ models faster. As a result, it is
capable of running many existing STELLA models with little or no modification. Simply save
your STELLA model's equations as text and open them in Berkeley Madonna.

System Requirements
Berkeley Madonna for Windows runs on personal computers with Intel x86 or compatible
processors under Microsoft Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, Windows XP and later versions of
these operating systems.

The flowchart editor requires Java support to be installed on your system. Previous versions of
Madonna required Sun Microsystems's JRE (Java Runtime Environment) 1.1 software. The
current version (8.3) of Madonna requires Java 1.4 or above, which can be downloaded from
java.sun.com.

To verify that everything is installed properly, launch Berkeley Madonna, choose About Berkeley
Madonna from the Help menu, and click the Load Java button. The text reading "Java not loaded"
should change to "Flowchart version 8.0.4". If you get an error message saying that the Java Runtime
Environment is not installed, try reinstalling the JRE software. If you still cannot get it to work, please
contact us at madonna@kagi.com.
