This Knowledge Base Article, AP-0900-0030, details the different options to successfully send the SysRegData.epm
registration file to Emerson using the Internet.
When the DeltaV Registration Utility is run on the ProfessionalPLUS server, it creates an encrypted XML file
(SysRegData.epm) that can be sent to Emerson.

1 Automatically generating the registration file


The registration utility can be configured to automatically generate the registration file monthly for DeltaV versions 13.3
and lower, or as desired for DeltaV versions 13.3.1 and higher. Once the automatic generation of xml file is set up, the
user has a choice between sending this automatically using System Health Monitoring (SHM), automatically through the
internet, or manually at a later time.

To automatically generate the registration files every month, the following fields must be filled out:
 For DeltaV version 13.3 and lower:
o Day — The recurring scheduled date (day) of month
o Time — Time of generating of the .EPM files
o Unsent File Directory — Folder location where to place the .EPM files. This needs to be on the ProPlus at
“…\DVData\SysRegLogFiles” (to align with SHM default).

 For DeltaV version 13.3.1 and higher:
o Start Date/Time
o Frequency (Daily/Weekly/Monthly)
o Unsent File Directory — Folder location where to place the .EPM files. This needs to be on the ProPlus at
“…\DVData\SysRegLogFiles” (to align with SHM default).

2 Automatically sending the registration file


2.1 Sending the registration file using SHM
For systems with SHM, the SHM appliance sends the registration file automatically.
To set the automatic sending of registration files, configure the registration utility to generate SysRegData.epm
automatically by using the settings provided in Section 1. Make sure the following items in the registration utility are left
blank or unchecked (refer to Figure 1 or Figure 2 depending on the system’s DeltaV version):
 (UNCHECK) SMTP Authentication Required
 (BLANK) Proxy and Port Number
 (BLANK) Email Server
 (BLANK) Sender’s Email
The SHM appliance will then grab this file from the specified directory and email it using SHM.

2.2 Sending the registration file using an email server (without SHM)
To set the automatic sending of registration files on systems without SHM, configure the registration utility to generate
registration file automatically by using the settings provided in Section 1, and fill out the following fields for the utility to
send the file:
 Proxy and Port Number
 Email Server
 Sender’s Email
 SMTP Authentication Required, and the credentials as required
Refer to Section 5 for more information when configuring the registration utility to connect to the Internet.

3 Sending the registration file when manually running the DeltaV Registration
Utility
The DeltaV Registration Utility can send the registration file to the Emerson server through the Internet—either using Web
Services or using an email server.
Refer to Section 5 for more information when configuring the registration utility to connect to the Internet.

3.1 Sending the registration file using Web Services


1. After the DeltaV Registration collects the system information, it will ask the end user to either choose the option
Send Data or Save To File. Click Send Data.

2. If the ProfessionalPLUS machine is not using a proxy server, click No Proxy Required.

Otherwise, enter the IP Address then append it with http ports 80 or 8080, or https 443, and then click Use Proxy
Entered.
Specifying the DNS name of the proxy server instead of the IP address should also work, provided that there is an
available DNS server that will resolve the DNS name to the correct IP address. If there is no DNS server
available, manually adding the DNS name and the IP address in the machine host file is another option. A good
way to test this is to issue a ping command using the DNS name and see if replies from the matching IP address
would be received.
Once the file has been sent, the following message will be displayed: “The system data has been successfully
sent! Click on the “Next” button to continue.”

3.2 Sending the registration file using the Email Server
If the DeltaV Registration Utility fails to contact the Emerson server using the Internet in Section 3.1, the utility gives the
options Email Data or Save To File.
To send the registration file using Email using the DeltaV Registration Utility, fill in the IP address of the email server and
a valid email address. If the currently logged on user does not have the privilege to access the email server, an SMTP
authentication name and password will be required. After filling in the details, click Email Data.

Once the file has been sent, the following message will be displayed: “The system data has been successfully sent using
email! Click on the “Next” button to continue.”

4 Manual Transmittal
If the abovementioned options fail, click Save to File to save the registration file, and then manually send it to Emerson.
The Save To File method will ask for a directory to save the SysRegData.epm file into. For systems that has been set up
to automatically generate the registration file, the file is saved in the specified directory.
You can then manually deliver the file to Emerson by emailing it to emailregistrationsystems@emerson.com or by
uploading it to the DeltaV product registration web page in the Guardian Website. Login to Guardian, go to System Info
and upload the *.epm file under Registration.

5 Tips for Sending the SysRegData.epm file using the internet


Note: The DeltaV system must be isolated from outside network s including plant LAN and the Internet.
Connections to outside network s must be made through a DeltaV work station such as the ProfessionalPLUS
server. Routers/firewalls must be used to isolate this connection from outside network s. Consult the DeltaV
Security Manual whitepaper for more details on securing your network . Relevant articles on network security

There are several ways of obtaining connection to the Internet. The computer can be connected to the internet using a
modem, which communicates to an Internet Service Provider (analog, ISDN, broadband cable, DSL, and others) or it can
be part of a Local Area Network (LAN) that has internet connection. Either way, a proxy server can also be set up if
available.
 Check if the following URL can be resolved:
https://guardian.emersonprocess.com/EmrSystemRegSys/Emerson.SystemRegistration.Service.Service.s vc
If the URL is resolved successfully, the webpage will display a generic Windows Communication Foundation
service page. Close the web browser. Return to the DeltaV Registration Utility dialog, and then click Send Data.
This will send the EPM file to Emerson using the Internet.
If instead the webpage reports that it cannot display the URL, then there maybe issues with Domain Naming
Service (DNS). The IP address of the Emerson SureService® web server is 10.16.16.238. Verify the access by
pinging both the DNS name, guardian.emersonprocess.com, and the IP address 10.16.16.238. However, first
ensure that there is an available DNS server that can resolve the DNS name to the correct IP address. Otherwise,
manually add the DNS name and the IP address in the machine host file.
 If the URL can be resolved but the DeltaV Registration Utility still cannot connect to the Emerson web server,
contact the Internet Service Provider or the LAN administrator. It is likely that the connection to the Internet is
behind a firewall. If so, then the firewall should be configured to allow communication to and from the plant LAN IP
address of the ProfessionalPLUS server, especially on the following ports: 80, 8080, and 443. One example of a

firewall is the Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server. The plant LAN IP address of the
Professional PLUS server should be allowed by ISA to communicate to the Emerson web service.
 Aside from manually entering the proxy server name or IP address in the Proxy Server Info dialog box, the
following can also be done to set the same values in Internet Explorer:
1. In the Tools menu, click Internet Options. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.

2. Select the option Use a proxy server for your LAN and provide the IP address. Set the port to 80, 8080, or
443, whichever works. Click Advanced.

3. In the Proxy Settings dialog box, make sure that the checkbox Use the same proxy server for all protocols
is selected. In the Exceptions area, enter the domain name and internal web sites, if available.

4. Click OK, and then click the next OK button, and then click Apply.

 For DeltaV v11.3.x and v12.3.x, users may receive the message “The web service was unable to communicate
with the Emerson host system.” after clicking the “Send Data” option of the SureService Registration Utility
(SSRU). Refer to the KBA NK-1600-0051: "Send Data" Option of the SureService Registration Utility Fails to
Upload the Registration File for the link of hotfixes for v11.3.1 and v12.3.1 systems and the work-around for v11.3
and v12.3 systems.
