My comment:
According sa short discussion dito ginamit ang text from Matthew4:4 kung saan si
Hesus ay nagsalita "it is written", to answer the tempter o the devil. The writer of
this conclude na dahil sa pagsitas ni Hesus ng kasulatan against sa devil therefore
"all we need is the bible".
Una natin alamin dito sis bakit ginamit ni Hesus ang kasulatan to answer the
devil? Porket ba ginamit ni Hesus ang kasulatan to answer the devil we can
assumed here na Jesus recommend a concept of bible alone?
I have more things to say actually here, I think the key issue here is not the act of
Jesus citing scriptures but on the scripture passage na ginamit nya we read
Luke 4,4
"It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds
from the mouth of God.’"
Deuteronomy 8,3
[3]He afflicted you with need, and he gave you MANNA as your food, which
neither you nor your fathers knew, so as to reveal to you that it is not by bread
alone that man lives, but by every word that goes forth from the mouth of God.
Jesus did not quote scripture for nothing, when he quote that passage He did not
lead us to based our theology to what is only written but he lead us to something
which is the "MANNA". Manna from Old testament is not just a bread that
satisfied Israelites hunger nung naglalakbay sila from Egypt to Israel, it pointed to
something more than the bread which is to show God's power and goodness to his
people. The devil here falls into the same error ng mga sinaunang Israelites which
always demand God to show something as miracle to proved his Divine power
without any theological implication, kaya ginamit ni Hesus ang passage na ito to
tell the devil na he fails to understand the purpose of miracle . Jesus quote "Man
shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of
God." Look the passage He used, "every word that proceeds from the mouth of
God",
John 6:48-51
[48]I am the bread of life.
[49]Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died.
[50]This is the bread which descends from heaven, so that if anyone will eat from
it, he may not die.
[51]I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.
here Jesus referring Himself as the bread of life which Jesus draw a connection to
the Manna of the old testament, remember people followed Jesus because he gave
them food feeding 5,000 men nung panahon na yun, now sa John 6 mababasa mo
umabot sa punto na ang mga jews demand miracle kay Jesus same with the devil
sa Matthew 4, the Jews said to Jesus we read
John 6,30
[30]And so they said to him: "Then what sign will you do, so that we may see it
and believe in you? What will you work?
John 6,32-33.35
[32]Therefore, Jesus said to them: "Amen, amen, I say to you, Moses did not give
you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
[33]For the bread of God is he who descends from heaven and gives life to the
world."
[35]Then Jesus said to them: "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall
not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
Conclusion
This passage does not point out sa validity ng scripture alone but rather it point to
Christ Himself as the Word of God. Sa madaling sabi hindi basehan ang Matthew
4:4 para masabi na all we need is the bible. We catholics like Christ believe sa
authority ng scriptures which is makikita natin na ginamit sa passage, now to say
na the bible ALONE is the only foundation to know our doctrines ito ay
paglampas sa nais iparating ng Matthew 4:4, walang mababasa na nais iparating ni
Hesus na bible lang ang kailangan, yes we need scriptures as our source which is
Old testament sa case ni Jesus sa panahon niya but not scripture alone kung
babasahin natin ang buong mensahe ng bible at konteksto ng nasabing verse,
Christ saw the authority of scripture but it doesn't mean there is no other authority
maliban sa scriptures.
