General Description
The 2 quadrant field regulator unit is designed to supply constant current to the field winding of a
separately excited DC motor (shunt wound).
The unit is capable of producing up to 80 A DC but in practice does not usually exceed 60 A DC.
The unit is supplied by a single phase field transformer with a secondary winding of 150v. The
transformer is normally rated between 10 and 15KVA.
The polarity of the DC output from the field regulator is constant. Field current polarity to the
motor field is altered outwith the field regulator unit by means of contactors.
The maximum field current setting must not exceed that stated on the motor nameplate.
The DC voltage output level of the regulator is not relevant as the operation of the motor will only be
affected by the field current level.
On Board Supplies
The power supply to the PC0113 card is provided by the +15vdc and -15vdc regulator Reg 1 and 2
Current Regulator
The current regulator compares the voltage reference with the current feedback signal and regulates
the firing of the thyristors to maintain a constant current output.
The current feedback is derived by means of the internally mounted field current Hall Effect Device
current transformer.
The voltage reference can be any of three selectable field level references selected via external
digital interface to onboard analogue switches. The field level associated with each selection is
determined by the setting of its associated potentiometer.VR2,VR3 & VR4
Monitoring the field current feedback is an adjustable field output failure signal which provides a
digital output should the field current drop below a preset level. The preset level is adjusted by
Enable Signal
On receipt of this signal the field regulator is permitted to operate and will regulate a current output
at the selected field level reference. The enable signal on its own will produce an output at field
level 1. On removing this signal the field regulator will reduce its output to zero instantly. This input
must be present to allow an output of any field level to be produced.
Field Level 2
Selected in addition to the enable signal this input causes the preset field level 2 current output to
be produced. Field level 2 can be adjusted to any value below field level 1.
Field Level 3
Selected in addition to the enable signal and the field level 2 signal this input causes the preset
field level 3 current output to be produced. Field level 3 can be adjusted to any value below field
level 2.

This document describes the inspection and test strategy to be applied for each field regulator.
The test results worksheet may be replicated and completed for each regulator tested in a batch.
Determine if the field regulator armature current feedback is by means of DCCT or HED. Most new
field regulators will be by HED but some older units requiring repair and retest may be DCCT
Verify the synchronising voltage level. This can be either 600v or 415v and determines the primary
voltage of the multi tap control transformer.
Verify all installed components are correct to the requirements of the standard field regulator

Verify the security of all electrical connections made within the field regulator including busbar
terminations and PCB terminal strips.
Carry out a brief visual inspection of the PC0113 control card to ensure components are correctly
installed.
Set the frequency selector on the PC0113 control card to the 50 hertz position.
Test Setup
Connect the control test wiring harness to the main control terminals of the field regulators.
Install 2 field regulators in the test rig in order to be able to conduct a complete test of all the
functions of the field regulator. If only 1 regulator is required to be tested 1 of the test regulators
should be installed.
Connect the 600v/415v synchronising supply wiring to terminals 5 and 6 of each field regulator unit.
Select 600v or 415v synchronising supply source at the test rig controls as required.
Energise the test supplies box and press the field regulator start pushbutton.
Move the selector switch on the test rig controls to 2Q to apply power and control voltages to
both regulators
Proceed through each test case in the test results worksheet and acknowledge completion by
signature.
