PAST SIMPLE

Se utiliza para referirse a acciones que se desarrollaron en el pasado y que hace ya algún
tiempo que finalizaron. 

I love my dog. I
change my backpack.

I loved my dog. I
changed my backpack

Go – went fly - flew


buy- bought

Know – knew come - came

Para formar el pasado simple


con verbos regulares, usamos
el infinitivo y añadimos la
terminación “-ed”. La
forma es la misma para todas
las personas (I, you, he, she,
it, we, they).

Ejemplos:

  want →     wanted
  learn →     learned
  stay →     stayed
  walk →     walked
  show →     showed

Subject + verb + complement

I want a hamburger. ------ I wanted a hamburger

She walks at park. ---------- She walked at park.

They stay at home. -------- They stayed at home.

1. Para verbos que terminan en una “e”, sólo añadimos “-d”.


Ejemplos:

  change →     changed changeed


  believe →     believed

2. Si el verbo termina en consonante, vocal y una consonante (excepto “y” o “w”), doblamos la


consonante final.

Ejemplos:

  stop →     stopped
  commit →     committed

3. Con verbos que terminan en una consonante y una “y”, se cambia la “y” por una “i”.

Ejemplos:

  study →     studied
  try →     tried

En estas oraciones no se da información sobre el presente:

I walked yesterday.

Con frecuencia se indica el periodo en el que se desarrolló la acción:

I cooked enchiladas the last month.

La estructura de la frase es similar a la del presente, utilizando el verbo principal en su forma


pasada.

Luis bought a car.

Luis buys a car.

Carlos asks a question to his teacher. //Carlos asked a question to his teacher.
Laura breaks her pencil /// Laura broke her pencil.

Susana and me watch TV. /// Susana and me watched TV.

En las formas negativas e interrogativas se emplea, asimismo, una estructura similar: se utiliza el
verbo auxiliar "to do" en su tiempo pasado, que acompaña al verbo principal en su forma
infinitiva:

En la formación del tiempo pasado hay que distinguir entre verbos regulares e irregulares: los
verbos regulares forman el tiempo pasado añadiendo "-ed" a la forma infinitiva, mientras que los
irregulares no siguen un patrón determinado, hay que estudiarlos individualmente.

La forma pasada de los verbos es única para todas las personas, no hay una forma distinta para la
3ª persona del singular como ocurría en el presente.
