Summer SY 2019-2020

Course Title : CHARACTER FORMATION: NATIONALISM & PATRIOTISM


Course Code : CFLM 1

Course Description : CFLM 1 is one of the major courses of the Bachelor of Science
in Criminology. It introduces first year students to the importance of character education
as a groundwork for nationalism and patriotism in accord with the rhythm and harmony
of nature in the context of higher education level of learning in the Philippines today.

Developing good moral character plays a vital and essential role in developing Filipino
nationalism and patriotism, by deepening the personal understanding and practice of
virtues as needed in the era of globalization.

This course therefore critically examines the tenets of nationalism and its characteristics
and then delves on its significance to patriotism. It then revisits Philippine history with
emphasis on the rise of Filipino nationalism and patriotism as a bulwark of becoming an
independent ipso jure community. Moreover, this course will also take up the
Constitutional mandates, duties and functions with respect to the environment,
environmental planning through environmental impact assessment, environmental
protection principles, climate change, and the protection of biological diversity.

Overview : Accordingly, Section 5 (2), Article VI of CHED


Memorandum Order (CM) No. 05, s. 2018 or otherwise known as the Policies, Standards
and Guidelines for the Bachelor of Science in Criminology (BS Criminology) Program
provides that “[I]t is therefore the mission of the Criminology program to provide
the community with professionally competent and morally upright graduates who
can deliver efficient and effective services xxx who have the knowledge, skills and values
in addressing the problem of criminality in the country and the character and
competencies to meet the challenges of globalization xxx.” (Emphasis supplied).

It is submitted that character education is one of the most effective and efficient ways to
respond to the call of addressing the problem of criminality in the Philippines nowadays.
Character education is vital to the moral development of the individuals. It is the
deliberate effort to develop good character based on core virtues that are good for the
individuals and good for society. Hence, this course offers the students a profound
knowledge and understanding of virtues as a groundwork for forming world-class
Ignacian Marian graduates who are imbued with reverence, love and sacrifice for their
country in their pursuit to a balance and healthful ecology.

Course Outcomes :

CO1. Articulate the importance of character education in the formation of world-class


Ignacian Marian graduates who are imbued with reverence, love and sacrifice for their
country.
CO2. Discover and live out realistically the virtues that promote commitment,
responsibility, probity, propriety and integrity as future Ignacian Marian law enforcers.
CO3. Apply the tenets of nationalism and patriotism in the midst of challenges brought
about by the ethics of subjectivity, passivity, nonchalant attitude, and Filipino crab
mentality.
CO4. Create methods and strategies on how to implement the State policy and
pertinent laws on/about environmental protection and preservation.

Learning Activities:
 Distance learning through learning management systems which include but not
limited to
Google Classroom, Schoology, Zoom and Messenger.
 Case study, problem-solving and interactivity with others.
 Video analysis and writing a reflection/reaction paper.
 Branching out scenarios whereby students’ decision making abilities and leadership
skills are tested.
 Song interpretation thru video collaging method (group activity).

Mode of Delivery : Blended Learning

Number of Hours : 54 Hours (32 hours of online learning content discussion,


10 hours of self-directed activity, 6 hours of making the song interpretation, and 6 hours of
online examinations, quizzes and assignments)

The Value of Character Education in General: Why We

Need It? Lesson 1. Setting the Stage: The Case for Character

Education Objectives:

1. Explain and understand the definition of character.


2. Appraise factors that influence character.
3. Articulate how character education has contributed the moral life of the individuals.

 Exploring the Importance of Character Education
Lesson 2. Encouraging Moral Reflection

Objectives:
1. Know and understand the moral development of the human person.
2. Perceive and appreciate the intrinsic value of others as others.
3. Discover strategies to help future law enforcers care for their job.

Contents:
 Exploring Lawrence Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development
 Gaining Understanding of the Need for Moral Development
 Know and analyze the six (6) E’s and Five (5) I’s of character training.
 Discover virtues that promote commitment.

Nationalism & Patriotism in the 21st Century Philippines: A Challenge to Law


Enforcers June 22-26, 2020
Lesson 3. Nationalism and Patriotism: Then & Now
Objectives:
1. Know and understand the concept/essence of nationalism and patriotism.
2. Compare and contrast the different characteristics of nationalism and patriotism.
3. Criticize the Filipinos’ lack sense of nationalism.
4. Develop plans on how to perpetuate the relevance and real essence of nationalism
and patriotism in the Philippines today.

 Revisiting Filipino Nationalism from 19th Century Reformers to the Contemporary
Ones

Lesson 4. Legal Basis of Filipino Nationalism


Objectives:
1. Point out the provisions of the 1987 Philippine Constitution and judicial decisions
with respect to Filipino nationalism.
2. Examine the salient features of the “Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines”
3. Create methods for educating Filipino citizens about the proper and correct way of
revering and respecting the flag, the national anthem, and other national symbols.

The Law on Natural Resources, Environmental Conservation and Preservation

Lesson 5. The State Ownership of Natural Resources

Objectives:

 Defining Natural Resources
 Knowing the Territorial Boundaries and Limitations of the Philippines’ Ownership of
Its Natural Resources.
 Studying the different classifications of lands and the manner of its acquisition and
disposition.

Lesson 6. Environmental Management: A Strategy for Sustainable Development

Objectives:

1. Equip with knowledge about the importance of environmental protection and


management as strategy for sustainable development.
2. Evaluate the different dimensions of sustainable development as a basis for
environmental management (planning, implementation and assessment).
3. Create methods and strategies for the protection of biological diversity.

Environmental Laws, Rules and Regulations in the

Philippines Lesson 7. The Laws on Water, Land and Air

Objectives:

1. Evaluate the extent of implementation of the different laws about the water quality
management, air and land protection laws.
2. Promote public information and education to encourage participation of an informed
citizenry in environmental quality planning and monitoring.
3. Advocate on the protection and preservation of the environment and promote the
sustainable use of environmental resources.
Contents:
 Knowing and understanding the Water Code of the Philippines (PD 1067) & the
Marine Pollution Law (PD 600)
 Studying the Philippine Mining Act (RA 7942) & the Anti-Pollution Law (PD No. 984)
 Examining the Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Waste Control Act of
1990 (RA 6969) & Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999 (RA 8749) & 2004 (RA 9275)

Lesson 8. Other Pertinent Laws, Rules and

Regulations Contents:

 Knowing and understanding the Pollution Control Law (PD No. 984), Ecological
Solid Waste Management Act (RA 9003), Environmental Awareness and Education Act
of 2008, and the Climate Change Act of 2009 (RA No. 9729)
 Examining the Important Role, Purposes, Duties and Functions for the Creation of
the Philippine Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) System (PD No. 1586) and the
Creation the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) (EO No.
192)

Students’ Tasks/Activities:

 By group online song interpretation (video presentation) of Ka Freddie Aguilar’s song


“Bayan Ko” (Final Period Requirement).
 Daily quizzes/assignments via www.schoology.com or at Google Classroom. Note: Each
student enrolled in this course is required to open or have account with these two (2)
learning management systems.
 Reflection/reaction paper is required in every video presented in the discussion.
 Case analyses and presentation.
 Action plan write-up on environmental conservation and protection.
 Mandatory attendance/participation during scheduled online discussions.

Online Class Etiquette/Code of Conduct/Expectations:

 Students are required to uphold the dignity and sanctity of privileged communication.
Hence, all online undertakings/dealings (personal data, video conference, scores,
grades, etc.) should be kept and treated with utmost confidentiality. In a word,
students are not permitted to share all data/materials of this course to any third party
without prior notice and consent either from the instructor or from the student/s
subject of the material. There is a prima facie presumption once the datum/material
is shared, transferred and/or uploaded, the sharer, transferor and/or uploader is the
CLASS, unless otherwise rebutted to the contrary.
 Students should always mute their microphones in every online class discussion,
unless otherwise he or she is asked to answer a question, or he or she will ask a
question, or raise a point of contention or clarification.
 Once a document, module and/or video is uploaded or attached to the Group
whether at Google Classroom or Schoology or Messenger, students are
automatically permitted to have access to the uploaded document, module and/or
video.
 Students should always uphold the Ignacian Marian policy on decency and modesty.
Hence, sando’s, mini-skirts, and any daring attire (especially for the ladies) during
online class discussion is always prohibited. Failure to follow this rule, he or she will
be automatically barred from joining the class on that particular discussion, be
marked absent, and likewise not allowed to take the quiz on that day, if any.
 Should you have any questions or concerns of confidential nature, please feel free to
message the instructor directly and privately to his messenger account or at his
email as written above at anytime most convenient to you.
