CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Literary works like poems, plays, short stories, and novels are interesting and
challenging to be read and analyzed. Through reading literature, we will not only drive
our mind for pleasure but we can also get many benefits such as skills, knowledge, and
imaginative experiences. The writers will only focus on the novel. There are many useful
knowledge experiences that the writers can get through reading literary works especially
a novel, for example, we will be able to think of an imaginative language expression
creatively; can increase our understanding about human’s behavior and attitude.
In this study, the writers have chosen the novel “The Outlaw, Man vs Mob”
written by Max Brand as the subject. It is one of interesting novels that has been written
by Max Brand in which its story is not only enjoyable to read and it can also improve our
vocabulary. The novel tells about someone who wants to get his reputation back. The
writers only analyze the setting on the novel, which entitles An Analysis on Setting
Found in a Novel Written by Max Brand “The Outlaw, Man vs Mob”. The writers are
interested in analyzing the setting in the novel because there are several places in the
novel that takes important portion in the novel.
Statement of the Problems
1. What places that take important portion during Larry tries to take his
reputation back?
2. How is social environment (atmosphere) during Larry tries to get his
reputation back?
1.2 Purpose of the Study
1. To find out places that takes important portion during Larry tries to get his
reputation back.
2. To find out social environment (atmosphere) during Larry tries to get his
reputation back?
1.3 Significance of the Study
It is expected that the information in this analysis will be regarded as one of the
references for the students who have plan to conduct the same analysis. It is also expected
that the students can learn more about literary word especially novel.
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 The Concept of Literature

In understanding about literature, literature has the basic concept as follows: first,
whenever someone speaks or writes which are concerned with not only to say something
but also to say it well and memorable, it is called the concept of literature. Second, when
the simple words or languages are formulated into artistic patterns of sound and meaning
and give us with a great pleasure, it will be said as literary works.
Literature defines as the class of writing in which imaginative expression,
aesthetic form, and universality of ideas, as poetry, drama, short story, and novel
(Webster, 1971:558). Literature also defines as written works, those regarded as having
artistic merit (Concise Oxford English Dictionary).
Related to the meaning of literature, Koesnosoebroto (1982:2) mentions three
characteristic of literature: first, literature has a power, which refers to the use of
language in a piece of work that sometimes can affect the readers’ mind. Second,
literature is vivid that enables us to hear, feel, and see something through the power of
our heart. The last, the language of literature is clear. It means that the author uses a
passage in describing the entire aspects of literary work.
In order to know more about the meaning about of literature, we have to know
about its classification. Koesnosoebroto divides literature into: literature of knowledge
and literature of imagination. Literature of knowledge presents facts, ideas, and the
explanation of scientific process. And the meaning of literature of imagination is
interpreting experience by fictive presentation of persons, ideas, and events as in a prose,
drama, and novel (1996:10).
2.2 Novel
A novel is an extended fictional prose narrative. Like the short story, the novel
tells a story but, unlike the short story, it presents more than an episode or a chapter. In
novel, the writer has freedom to develop plot, characters, setting, and theme slowly. In
Concise Oxford English Dictionary, a novel is a fictitious prose narrative of book length.
2.3 Types of the Novel
Sumarjo and Saeni classify the novel into three types as follows:
A. Romance Novel
It is a novel which usually provides a story of love between man and
another, like in “Romeo & Juliet” and”Ayat-Ayat Cinta.”
B. Adventure Novel
It is kinds of novel that tells about someone’s experiences from the
beginning until the end of the story, such in “The Adventure of Tow Sawyer”
C. Fantasy Novel
It is types of a novel that has magical and supernatural characters and
events. It tells about unreal life that will never happen in real life, such as “Harry
Potter.”
2.4 Elements of Novel
There are some elements of the novel that we have learnt before. They are:
A. Title
Title can represent the whole parts of the story, what the novel tells about,
when and where the story takes place, and who the character is. There are some
kinds of title, significant object and suggested plot.
B. Theme
Theme is defined as the underlying meaning of the story. Koesnosoebroto
(1988:79) mentions that theme must be expressible in the form of statement and
must be stated as generalization about human’s life.
C. Character
Character of the book is fictional figures that move through the plot.
Koesnosoebroto (1988:67) classifies into major and minor character. The major
character takes an important role of the story from the beginning until the end.

D. Plot
Plot is the arrangement of chronological order of the story events. There
six steps: exposition, narrative, arising action, climax, fallen action, and resolution
(Holman, 1966:377).
E. Conflict
Conflict is the struggle that grows out of the play of the opposing side.
Edward H. Jones divides conflict into three; there are social conflict, physical
conflict, and psychological conflict.
F. Setting
Setting is taking an important role about where and when the story takes
place. The major elements of setting are the time, the place, and the social
environment (atmosphere) (Mark Schorer, 1950:871).
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

The meaning of the research is the application of a scientific approach in the study
of the problems. The purpose is to discover answer to meaningful questions of scientific
procedures (Donald Ary, 1979:20).
In this study, the writers applied descriptive method because the writers will
describe some places in the novel. The technique is library research because the writers
get the data from some sources such as references, books, dictionaries, and internet which
have relationship to the study. After collecting these sources, the data will de examined
carefully.
According to John B. Best (in Ary, 1979:20) the descriptive method is a method
that used to describe and interpret what it is; it is concerned with condition or relationship
that exist.
3.2 Approach
In literary work, approach is the researcher’s view and attitude toward
literature. There are four approaches: mimetic approach, pragmatic approach, expressive
approach, and objective approach. Mimetic approach means the expression of action,
character, or emotion by gesture and movement without words. Pragmatic approach deals
with things in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations.
Expressive approach conveys effectively with thought and feelings. And objective
approach is not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering facts. The
writer used objective approach to analyze and identify the setting that is presented in the
novel. In addition, the writers also analyze any other objects that exist in the novel such
the author’s life.
3.3 The Object of the Study
The object is the novel “The Outlaw,Man vs Mob” that is written by Max brand.
The places can be in the form of paragraphs and dialogues that presented by the author.

3.4 Data Collection

The writers get the data from reading and understanding the novel. Then the
writers select the data concerned with research problems. The data are chosen on the
basis of the purpose of the study.
3.5 Data Analysis
After collecting the data, the writers interpret the problems related to the research
problems. The writers analyze the data based on the novel and give the conclusions based
on the analyzed data.
