PREFACE

First of all, I would like to thank to the teacher that give me the assignment to
write about Khmer Fork Tales. So I have a chance to deeper study about Khmer
Fork Tale and the tittle of this story is call “The Crane and the Crab “.

The Crane and the crab is the story of Khmer Fork Tale that have known by
many of Cambodian Children.

I know that this assignment is not perfect. But I hope it can be useful for us.
Critics and suggestion is needed here to make this assignment be better,
hopefully we as a student in English literature Studies Department, AEU can get
many knowledge from this assignment where there will be helpful in the future.

 The crane and the crab
រ ឿងសត្វរ្រៀលនឹងក្តាម

Once upon a time, there was a crane living near a

river. He was very cunning.The crane was getting
old, so he was worried about his life, like how will
he arrange food for himself.

So one day he made a plan. He went to the river and

told a fish that” soon this river will have no water
due to droughts and then all of the fishes and water
animals will die.”The fish got very scared, Fish
informed her other friends about the danger and then
all the fishes, crabs, tortoise went to the crane for some solution.

The crane was exactly waiting for this moment.“Oh dear fishes, don’t worry, by the time I am
here, you will not have
any problem. I know a
nearby lake which is
full of water.I will
take all of you one by
one to the new lake.
“The crane proposed
to the fishes.All the
fishes agreed to the
crane’s idea.

Next day, the crane took one fish in his beak and flew away.The cruel crane had his own
plan, he smashed the fish on the rock and ate it.The crane was very happy with his plan, as
now he got an easy solution for his food problem.The crane returned to the river and told all
the fishes that the first fish is very happy in the new lake.All the fishes and the other river

animals believed the cruel crane.Now everyday crane was taking one fish from the river and
consuming it on his way.

One day it was the crab’s turn, the crab sat on the crane’s back and the crane flew away.From
the height, the crab did not see any other lake instead he saw a rock full of bones and skeleton
of fishes.The crab realized that the crane was telling lie to everyone. He sensed the danger so
he pinches hard on the crane’s neck.The crane apologized to the crab, but the crab was very
clever, he crushed the crane’s neck with his claws and returned to the river.When the fishes
came to know about the crane’s cruel plan, they all regretted trusting the crane and their blind
belief on the crane.Everyone thanked the crab for his quick action.

The End

Moral: Never trust or follow others blindly.
