It is believed Zodiac of Moon is divided into twenty seven (27) equal divisions and each segment is called ‘group of
stars’ ‘Nakshatra’ or ‘Constellation’. If one has only knowledge of Star astrology can easily explore nature, behaviour
and other predictions associated to life. In other words, learning about star astrology is simple than other branches of
astrology. Each person was born with particular star. So Star Astrology is all about the science to study the Nakshatra
in the field of astrology.

WHAT IS A NAKSHATRA (BIRTH STAR)

Hindu astrology has a unique system of prediction that is based on the position of the moon in a given Nakshatra
(constellation). Just as the units used for measuring the distance is miles or kilometers in the same way the space
(Akash Mandal) is measured in terms of Nakshatras (group of stars). There are twenty-seven Nakshatras in all. Each
one of them covers 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac. Each Nakshatra is the head of a particular group of stars.
A forecast based on the transit/ correlation/ inter – relation of planets in relation to the Nakshatras are more accurate
than the results predicted on the basis of any other system.
The concept of Nakshatra is exclusive only to Vedic astrology, and is known to give much more accurate results.
Nakshatras are the backbone of astrology and were taken into account even before Sign system was considered.
Nakshatras are considered throughout the astrological analysis.

WHAT DOES THE NAKSHATRA HAVE TO DO WITH YOU

The zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatra zones. Therefore, while navigating across the zodiac, the Moon has to pass
through one of the Nakshatras. When you were born, the Nakshatra in which the Moon was situated at that time is
called your “Janma Nakshatra” (Birth star). Accurate predictions can be made after ascertaining your Janma
Nakshatra. You can exploit opportunities through proper interpretation of the Nakshatra. Similarly, you can ward off
the negatives if you take corrective measures. Nakshatras are also associated with colours, symbols, deities; gemstones
etc.

The Ancient Sages divided the zodiac(apart from twelve signs) into 27 Nakshatras or constellations of 13.20
degrees each. A Nakshatra is also called as lunar mansion or constellation. Its reference is found in the ancient
Vedic scriptures. As per the Hindu mythology, all the twenty seven Nakshatras are the daughters of king Daksha
and Moon is married to all of them and the Moon spends approximately one day each in one constellation and thus
lunar month is of approximately of 27 days equal to the numbers of Nakshatras.

Nakshatras are classified as per several attributes like its owner, deity, sex, caste, species etc. The Nakshatra, in
which one's Moon is placed at the time of birth, is called Janma Nakshatra or the birth star. These Nakshatras are
further subdivided into four quarters known as Pada, each spanning 3.20 degrees, know as Navamsa. The
placement of planets in these padas or subdivisions is studied for finer predictions. Each zodiac sign covers nine
Padas in total. Thus we can see that Nakshatras are used for various purposes and one of its major uses is to
determine starting point of a dasha or planetary period or cycles that divide the time in major periods and sub
periods and to choosing a muhurtha or auspicious time for any important activity.

As per with their qualities, the 27 constellations are divided into following categories and are
favorable muhurtha for:

a. Sthira or Fixed,
b. Chara or Movable,
c. Ugra or Fierce,
d. Kshipra or Swift,
e. Mridu or Tender,
f. Tikshna or sharp,
g. Misra or Mixed

The Sthira or Fixed nakshatras are Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, and Uttara
Bhadrapada. These constellations are favorable for any work of fixed, stability and long term purpose like
planting trees, purchasing property, laying the foundations for buildings, construction of home, factory etc. This
will be more auspicious if these nakshatras happen to fall on Sunday.

constellations are favorable for buying automobiles, vehicles, gardening, going on journey and travel. This will be
more auspicious if these nakshatras happen to fall on Monday.

Bhadrapada. These constellations are favorable for destructive deeds such as demolishing any structure, setting
fires, making imprisonment and works that require force, weapons and confronting enemies. This will be more
auspicious if these nakshatras happen to fall on Tuesday.

trade and commercial transactions, admission in school or college, using medicine, taking or giving loans, journey
and travel. This will be more auspicious if these nakshatras happen to fall on Thursday.

The Mridu or Tender nakshatras are Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, and Revati.  These constellations are
favorable for making new friends and enjoyment of pleasures, romance, dance, drama, fashionable clothes,
writing of poetry. This will be more auspicious if these nakshatras happen to fall on Friday.
The Tikshna or Sharp nakshatras are Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, and Mula. These constellations are
favorable for filing for a divorce, black magic, casting spells, exorcism, punishment, hypnotism, evoking of spirits,
goblins, demons etc. This will be more auspicious if these nakshatras happen to fall on Saturday.

The Misra or mixed nakshatras are Krittika and Vishakha. These constellations are favorable for activities
like worshiping, fire ceremonies, purchasing furniture and electronics. This will be more auspicious if these
nakshatras happen to fall on Wednesday.
The nakshatras are one of the oldest references we have to astrology from the Rig Veda, dating back about 5,000
years ago. The Vedas are the religious scriptures of the great seers and sages of India. The nakshatras are like the
zodiacal signs but more specific. Their meanings are derived from the constellations, fixed stars and the mythology
behind these portions in the sky. They are rich in meaning and have ruling deities that reveal the stories or myths that
bring to life the symbology referred to in our own lives.

The nakshatra are classified in to Chara, Sthira, Mrdu, Ugra,

Tikshna, Kshipra and Mishra. Based on these qualities, they are
suitable for various activities. These are extensively used in muhurtha. For
instance, for coronation, planting of trees etc. the Sthira Nakshatras are
favourable as they offer fixity. On the other hand, activities such as
commercial transactions, taking medicine, travels etc. should be done in
Kshipra Nakshatras, as they last for short duration. Depending on the
Nakshatra occupied by Chandra, Lagna, Chandra Rashyesha and
Lagnesha, the native either faced with certain kinds of activities or he is
fond of doing certain activities. The Chandra Nakshatra and Chandra
Rashyesha Nakshatra indicate what environment the native is put into
(Chandra = Environment), while the Lagna and Lagnesha nakshatra
indicate what the native likes to do (Lagna = own thought and action).

1. Chara Nakshatra: Movable: Saravana, Dhanishta, Satabhisha,

Punarvasu and Swati are movable. They are auspicious for activities
needing movements such as acquiring vehicles, gardening, going on
procession etc.

2. Sthira Nakshatras: Fixed: Rohini, Uttaraphalguni, Uttarashadha

and Uttarabhadra are fixed. They are favourable for activities that
require fixity such as coronations, laying the foundations of cities,
sowing operations, planting trees etc.

3. Mrdu Nakshatras: Tender: Chitra, Anuradha, Mrigashira and

Revati are soft. They are favourable for activities pertaining to subtle
things such as wearing new apparel, learning dancing, music and fine
arts, sexual union, performance of auspicious ceremonies etc.

4. Ugra Nakshatras: Violent: Bharani, Magha, Purvaphalguni,

Purvashadha, and Purvabhadra. These constellations are favourable for
activities that requires violence, force, weapons, confronting enemies
etc. Activities such as demolishing a structure, setting fires, capturing
others with force, battles etc. are favoured in this Nakshatra.

5. Tikshna Nakshatra: Sharp: Moola, Jyeshta, Ardra and Ashlesha

are sharp. They are favourable for destructive activities such as
incantations, invoking spirits, imprisonment, murders (marana
mantra), separation of friends (ucchatana mantra) etc.

6. Kshipra Nakshatra: Swift: Ashvini, Pushya, Hasta and Abhijit

are Swift constellations. They are favourable for activities involving
swiftness such as putting ornaments, pleasures and sports,
administering medicine, starting industries, undertaking travels etc.
7. Mishra Nakshatra: Mixed: Krttika and Vishakha are mixed
constellations. They are favourable for activities like worshiping, fire
ceremonies, purchasing furniture and electronics.

In Hora Ratnam verses 518 to 520, it is mentioned that according to Sage

Saunaka, birth in different classes of nakshatras bestow following nature
on the native:

 Dhruva Nakshatra: Stable, forgiving

 Chara Nakshatra: Fickle minded, eat indiscriminately

 Ugra Nakshatra: Fierce, torture, confine others

 Mishra Nakshatra: Mixed, equal treatment to friends and foes

 Laghu Nakshatra: Limited enjoyment

 Mrdu Nakshatra: Promote quarrels, speak ill and dirty (Note:

There appears to be some corruption of the text as there is a difference
between the name “Mrdu” and the given nature).

The classification of the nakshatras are as follows:

(1) Ashvini: Ksipra, (2) Bharani: Ugra, (3) Krttika: Mishra, (4) Rohini, (5)
Mrgashira: Mrdu, (6) Ardra: tikshna (7) Punarvasu, (8) Pushya: Ksipra,
(9) Ashlesha: tikshna

(10) Magha, (11) Purvaphaguni: Ugra, (12) Uttaraphalguni: Sthira, (13)

Hasta: Ksipra, (14) Chitra: Mrdu, (15) Svati: Chara, (16) Vishakha: Mishra,
(17) Anuradha: Mrdu, (18) Jyeshtha: tikshna
(19) Moola: tikshna, (20) Purvashadha: Ugra, (21) Uttarashadha: Sthira,
(22) Sravana: Chara, (23) Dhanishtha: Chara, (24) Shatabhisha : Chara,
(25) Purvabhadra: Ugra, (26) Uttarabhadra: Sthira, (27) Revati: Mrdu

Narada Purana 56.177: The (four) asterisms Rohini, Uttara-

phalguni, Uttaraasadha and Uttarabhadra are ‘fixed’ (sthira). The
(three) asterisms Hasta (Surya), Asvini and Pusya are ‘swift’ (Ksipra).
Visakha (Dvidaivatya) and Krttika (Vahnibha) are ‘Mixed (Mishra)’.

Narada Purana 56.178: The (five) asterisms Dhanistha (Vasu),

Punarvasu (Aditya), Satabhisa (Ambu), Svati and Sravana (Visnu) are
‘moving’ (Chara). The (four) asterisms Mrgasira (Indu), Anuradha
(Mitra), Chitra and Revati (Antya) are ‘soft’ (Mrdu). And, the (five)
asterisms Purvaphalguni, Purvasadha, Purvabhadrapa, Magha and
Bharani (Antaka, Yama) are ‘violent’ (Ugra).

Narada Purana 56.179a: The (four) Asterisms Mula, Ardra, Ashlesha

(Indra) and Jyeshtha (Indra) are ‘sharp’ (tikshna). All have effects in
consonance with their nomenclatures.

Muhurtha Chintamani suggested that the qualities of the Nakshatras are

even more accentuated when they coincide with certain days (Vedic Vara,
starting at Sunrise). They are (1) Fixed-Sunday, (2) Movable-Monday, (3)
Violent-Tuesday, (4) Mixed-Wednesday, (5) Swift-Thursday, (6) Soft-
Friday, (7) Sharp-Saturday. This is logical as the grahas ruling the
mentioned weekdays also imbibe the same qualities as that of the
Nakshatras. For instance Surya is the most steady Graha, hence it is
mapped to Sthira Nakshatras; Chandra is the fastest Graha among the
Navagrahas, hence it is mapped to Chara Nakshatras and so on.

Muhurtha Chintamani: (1) Dhruva: Uttaraphalguni, Uttarashadha,

Uttarabhadra, Rohini on a Sunday, 4 nakshatras; (2) Chara: Swati,
Punarvasu, Sravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha on Monday, 5
nakshatras; (3) Ugra: Purvaphalguni, Purvaashadha, Purvabhadra,
Bharani, Magha on Tuesday, 5 nakshatras; (4) Mishra: Vishakha,
Krttika, On wednesday, 2 nakshatras; (5) Laghu: Hasta, Asvini,
Pushyami, Abhisit, on Thursday, 4 nakshatras; (6) Mrdu: Mrgashira,
Revati, Chitta, Anuradha, on Friday, 4 nakshatras; (7) Tikshna Mula,
Jyeshtha, Ardra, Ashlesha, on Saturday, 4 nakshatras.

The names of the different nakshatras are (in chronological order):-

In this ongoing journey of diving deeper into VA, I have seen many great
astrologers on the internet but there is one, in particular, who has blown
me away: Shri Deepanshu Giri Ji of Lunar Astro, who is on another level
altogether. His predictions and techniques will startle you and I highly
recommend that you should watch his videos to see how he predicts.
He uses this principle of predicting on blank charts (Charts without any
planets). When I used Rashis on blank charts then I got around 10 good
predictions (there were more but only ten which could shock the person)
but with nakshatras, I am consistently getting 10–15 good predictions per
constellation. Using one nakshatra you can make 25 different predictions
(at an intermediate stage) and don’t even get me started on how legendary
astrologers use it in their predictions.

Now that you know what they are, I would like to talk about their uses in
predictions and how they open up a whole world of possibilities.

Nakshatras and their energies

Ashwini represents speed, Bharani mainly deals with big transportation
and self-control, and Kritikka deals with passion and cutting things up
(literally and figuratively). These three constellations are present in one
Rashi: Aries. I would like you to take a moment to let that sink in. Each
zodiac sign has three completely different constellations, which have their
own energy.

Now take the moon to be in Aries and you have three completely different
personalities to choose from. Add padas to the mix and you have nine
unique personalities in one sign. Take different planets in different Rashis
(and nakshatras) and you have an unrepeatable human. Saturn represents
the way we work, Sun represents the way we lead other people, Jupiter
represents how much knowledge we have, Mercury represents how we
think, etc. When you mix these energies you make one person.

Vedic Astrology, as I explained in my previous articles, is a very complex

science and it is not so simple that one can easily master in a short amount
of time. It takes people decades to be able to call themselves masters of
one Dasha system, let alone a whole system of VA. Similarly, nakshatra
energy is also very complex and requires a lot of knowledge to be fully
understood.

Rashi Influence
When you are trying to squeeze out predictions from these constellations,
the Rashi’s impact always needs to be kept in mind. Let me explain this
with an example:-

Dhanishta and Revati nakshatras both represent a drum.

Dhanishta is in Capricorn which is the Rashi of your status, fame, and

basically being out there in the world. Therefore, Dhanishta’s drum
represents showing-off your achievements and status. Basically, getting
the attention of people.

Revati is in Pisces which is the Rashi of emotions, faith, and isolation.

Therefore, Revati’s drum will deal with actual music and talks about how
this person is very faithful towards music and uses it as a way to isolate
himself.

Hence, you can see how two nakshatras having a common symbol between
them, but still, they have completely different ways of manifestations. So,
we can easily come to the conclusion that each Rashi’s energy also has an
influence on nakshatras that cannot be overlooked.

Planetary Influence
There are two types of planetary influences on a nakshatra — extrinsic and
intrinsic. Extrinsic influence deals with planets sitting in nakshatras.
Intrinsic influence deals with nakshatra lords.

To provide a bit of context, each nakshatra has a planetary lord, a deity,

symbol/s, a plant, and an animal associated with it. These symbols and
deities represent the different manifestations of the energies of their
constellation. Now intrinsic influence deals with the planetary lord of the
nakshatras. The qualities of a nakshatra are reflected by the planet that
rules it, and you can use this point to make predictions.

For example, Ketu rules Ashwini, and Ashwini represents speed. Now I
know these two facts and I can make a prediction — wherever Ketu sits in
your chart, that person will be very speedy in his work and will always
expect others to act the same way. If Ketu is in the 4th house then the
native’s mother is like that, in the 7th then their spouse, in the 9th then the
father, etc.

This is just a glimpse of a prediction, and you can make many more
predictions using not only Ashwini but other Ketu nakshatras, namely
Magha and Moola, as well.

Extrinsic planetary influence refers to the effect the nakshatra has on a

planet that’s sitting in it. For example, Mercury in Ashwini means a person
talks and thinks very fast, Venus in Ashwini means that the person
changes relationships very fast, so on and so forth. The nakshatra energy
interacts with the planet and the person gets their physical manifestations.

Conclusion
The predictions I mentioned above are fairly common as compared to
others that require deep insight. For example, if mercury is in Ashwini, the
person has a habit of talking in his sleep. A very specific observation of one
of Ashwini’s symbol led me to this prediction. You can even predict the
presence of a horse-racing track near the house of a native if Ashwini is in
the third house of his chart and the Lagna is in a specific pada (which I
won’t disclose here). Now as a traditional predictor you can’t possibly
imagine why Aries Rashi will lead to sleep-talking or how it will lead to a
horse-racing track near the house. These pin-point predictions can’t be
done without nakshatras, and this is how they open up a whole new world
of possibilities.

Everything around you is energy, and you just have to understand it to

learn Vedic Astrology. The same will apply to these beautiful nakshatras.

Nakshatra or Constellations are very important for prediction in Astrology

The study of the influence of celestial bodies on earth and humans

There are twenty-seven Constellations or Nakshatras in twelve signs. These are the Indian form of the lunar
mansions or Nakshatra.

Each Constellation
A group of visible stars making a figure and visible at the night sky. Constellations (Nakshatras) are 27 divisions of
zodiac, each measuring 13.20'. They are also termed as Lunar mansions (Nakshatra in Indian Vedic astrology)

or Nakshatra is measured 13 degrees 20 minutes. It consists of four quarters (Charana or Padas). Thus, there are
nine quarters or 2¼ constellations in a Zodiac Sign.

Abhijit Nakshatra, an auspicious but not a regular constellation is also considered twenty-eighth Nakshatra in Vedic
astrology.

The starting point of the Signs, Nakshatra (constellations)

The Nakshatra and Rashi start at the same point which is the first point of Ashwini (Aries or Mesh) or end of the last
point of Revati (Pisces or Meen) that is zero degrees of Zodiac.

The Natal

Birth, natal chart is used for birth chart

Moon is placed in the birth-chart, according to the position of Moon at the time of birth (Epoch

) of an individual.

Judgments are made according to the nature of the natal Constellation

Each Constellation is ruled by one of the nine planets. The judgments are made according to the nature of the Natal
Constellation (Janma-Nakshatra), the house lord, the position of the house in the birth chart, in which the Natal
Constellation is positioned.

The Constellation indicates the individual’s personality, temperament, health, wealth, illness, and mental abilities.
The individuals differ in all the above aspects

Marriage compatibility based on the matching of the Janma Nakshatra

In Indian Vedic astrology, marriage compatibility is based on the matching of Nakshatras of both the boy and the girl.

Constellation is very important for daily prediction. The daily transit

Movement of planets in the sky in real time

of Moon in a constellation helps in predicting the destiny of that particular day according to the characteristics or
personality traits of that constellation.

We can choose the right time for any auspicious event by studying the transit of the moon through a constellation.

Some examples of the auspicious events are as follows:

Naming ceremony (Namkaran Sanskar) of a newborn baby, predicting the right time(Muhurat) for marriage, Mundan
Sanskar, Anna-Prashan or feeding the child for the first time.

We can find the auspicious period for performing the rituals through the transit effects of Moon in a Nakshatra and
it’s Pada(Charan). One should select an auspicious Muhurat for starting of a new business, journey and construction,
shifting to a new house.

How to identify constellations or star patterns in the sky?

People can identify constellations easily. We can see a group of stars forming a recognizable pattern in the night sky,
which is traditionally named after its clear form or identified with its mythological figure.

Types of constellations(International):

There are 88 divisions of the celestial sphere defined by International Astronomical Union, which are star patterns
within the traditional constellations, as a result, the number of the types of constellations has increased.
