you to know .Setting up an IPTV netw ork is actually incredibly easy.In
fact, alm ost anyone can do it. But if you knew that, you’d build your
ow n and no-one w ould m ake any m oney by selling you proprietary
products w ith huge m ark-ups.
IPTV netw orks are basically intranets,only the w eb brow ser isn’t on a
PC , it is on a set-top box. If you’ve set up an intranet or public
w ebsite,you can setup your ow n IPTV netw ork and do w hatyou w ant
w ith it. You don’t need m assive and expensive servers, specialised
set-top boxes or overly large developm ent team s w orking w ith
com plex softw are. W ith the right hardw are and softw are, it should
take you less than a few hours.

M PEG -4/Apache/PH P/M ySQ L.
1.Finding a new hom e for the kit

Luckily,your brand new shiny IPTV system w on’tneed m uch space at
all. The 2 PC s (w eb server and video server) can be hidden aw ay
under a desk, kept in a server room or tucked aw ay under the stairs
som ew here. U sing PLC adaptors m eans you don’t need cabling
dangling around. W hat you w ill need is a space for dem onstrating it
on a TV. That could be on a desk, in reception or in a corner of the
office w ith a couch.
2.C hoosing the right set-top box

The m ost criticaldecision in setting up your system is w hat IP set-top
box you w ill be using, as all of them run different softw are and have
different capabilities. All of them connect to the TV using a standard
scartcable or R C A sockets,and display PAL/N TSC video at standard
resolution. It’s preferable if they have a w eb-based controlpanel, but
m any have proprietary configuration screens or use sim ple telnet.
Firm w are upgrades are best served w ith a rem ote TFTP server, such
as thatprovided by vendors like SolarW inds.
The m ost popular choice of softw are is an em bedded w eb brow ser,

w hich for allintents and purposes does the sam e thing as a PC w eb
brow ser like IE, Firefox, O pera or Safari. The developer interface
tends to be a m ark-up language, usually H TM L/Javascript. The m ain
em bedded client softw are program s in use on IP set-top boxes today
are Fresco/G alio (from AntPlc),O pera,Escape/Evo (from Espial) and
M yrio (based on Espial).You can think ofthem oflittle w eb brow ser
units.
There are a lotofO EM vendors ofIP set-top boxes to choose from all
across the w orld. Som e exam ples include C om plete M edia System s,
Am ino, Kreatel(now M otorola), Vidanti, Tilgin (form ely i3 M icro), AD B
/ 7 G lobaland N etgem . M ost are open to the idea of directly selling 1-10
units at a tim e, although in m any instances it is better to go through a
. central distributor like G arland Partners. The cost varies, but you
should be paying in the range of £100-250 G BP for each set-top box,
including a rem ote controland/or keyboard.
